Best Video Game Engines

The Top Ten

1 Unity

It's very easy to use and very powerful. Games can be created by 1 person in a short duration of time.

Very underrated.

2 Source
3 Unreal Engine

In my opinion this one should be the in the first place. Especially The UNREAL ENGINE 4 is really awesome.

Graphics are the BEST!

4 Frostbite Engine

God of the engines

5 Infinity Engine
6 Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE)

Hmm, let's see, used by the father of open world games, Rockstar (North and San Diego), in some of the greatest games of the 6th, 7th, and 8th generation of videogames. Early Grand Theft Auto games like San Andreas, a beautiful game like Red Dead Redemption, and the amazing Grand Theft Auto 5. Not to mention Red Dead Redemption 2 soon and Grand Theft Auto 6 in the future years. - dylananders16

7 Anvil Engine
8 HeroEngine
10 GameMaker Studio 2

The Contenders

11 IW Engine
12 Chrome Engine
13 RPG Maker
14 ShiVa
15 Fox Engine
16 Clickteam Fusion 2.5
17 Cube
18 Godot

In my opinion, it's one of the more feature complete game engines. I used to use Unity, but I found that this is almost as easy to use. Unlike Unity, it's open source, with a permissive license. Supports both 3d and 2d game development. Recently C# support is added as well. Overall, I find this game engine to be a good alternative to Unity if for any reason you don't like proprietary game engine licenses.
