Top 10 Video Game Movies Not Based on Video GamesWhen people say that all video game movies are bad, they’re usually talking about movie adaptations of video games. However, there are video game movies out there that are literally about video games, or are made to look like video games, and aren’t actually based on an existing video game. While there are good ones, there are also bad ones.
The Top Ten
Only the first one, though. The sequel was more like a Tumblr movie than a video game movie.
I wonder what everyone thought when they saw this poster...hm... Well, this movie is amazing, and I think I'm overly obsessed for the fact that I spend everyday ranting about it on this website. Also, is it weird that Felix's personality is really appealing to me? (Not it a weird way, I'm not like those creepy Vanellope x Turbo shippers! ) 1000000/10 would Felix again
I thought I was going to hate this film when it first came out, but it is surprisingly great. This isn’t just a movie for video game fans. There are plenty of things for everyone to enjoy. The heart is what makes it great. The relationships are what makes it great. The characters are what makes it great. Every character is so likeable and relatable even. I felt bad for Ralph since all he ever wanted was to be appreciated. Although, if I had to say anything bad about the movie, it would be that I don’t understand why the Nicelanders were so mean to Ralph. It’s established that he’s just a character in an arcade game and not actually a villain. It just felt like a forced way to get the plot rolling. But other than that, this is a really great Disney film and a very great video game movie. - MegaSoulhero
If you haven’t seen this movie, then you must’ve at least heard of it. This is such a nostalgic movie. This was the first Jeff Bridges movie I watched. This is one of those movies that managed to gain a larger following as the years went on. Same thing happened with Hocus Pocus. Despite that being a terrible movie. Tron, however, is great. It has a very interesting premise and a great original story. I still find many of the scenes to be entertaining to this day. The effects haven’t aged well, but I can forgive the effects as long as the writing is good. Which it is. This is a video game movie that everyone should check out. - MegaSoulhero
This movie was better than I thought it would be. Steven Spielberg once again shows us that he can make good movies. I thought this would be a movie that relies too heavily on nostalgia, but it ended up being more than that. It actually has a good story and interesting characters. Although, I thought the relationship between Wade and Sam was really forced. I hate when movies try to force in a love subplot. Can’t we have a boy main character and a girl main character in a movie together and not have them become a couple later on? It didn’t really add anything to the movie. Also, I thought the CGI really sucked. I know it takes place in a virtual video game world, but they could’ve at least made it look like we weren’t just watching a bunch of CG happening in front of us. Some of the humor fell flat as well. There’s an entire scene that takes place in the Shining and I thought the dialogue in that scene was cheesy. The dialogue through most of the film can be pretty bad. Also, ...more - MegaSoulhero
This should be number one.
I was absolutely surprised by this movie. The trailers looked like hot garbage. I thought it was gonna be terrible. But I saw it and it was actually pretty funny. Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart should have more movies together. They are one hilarious duo. Also, Dwayne mjst really like being in movies that involve a jungle. I thought the idea of making Jumanji a video game instead of a board game in this movie was pretty clever since most kids these days play video games and don’t care about board games. I’ve seen the original Jumanji film and it does not hold up. I thought that this movie was a great way to introduce Jumanji to a new generation. It is very well done. - MegaSoulhero
The critics are wrong on this one. I thought this was a really great movie. No it’s not perfect, but it is a worthy sequel to the first movie. For one, the visuals are very impressive. I love how they used CGI to make Jeff Bridges look young. Something that Disney would later do for Ant-Man and Captain America: Civil War. And I guess Rogue One if that counts. I also thought the characters had a great connection. I especially enjoyed Olivia Wilde. Jeff Bridges gave the best performance in the entire movie. Because Bridges is an amazing actor. I love how despite being a sequel it feels very different. This is exactly what a sequel should do. This movie isn’t as great as the first Tron movie, but it’s still a fun ride. - MegaSoulhero
I've always found this movie underrated - Gangem
Overrated beyond belief! Edgar Wright is an excellent director. I’ve enjoyed all of his films. Except this one. I honestly don’t know what happened here. It’s nothing but seizure inducing imagery and over the top acting. This had a good concept. It’s great that they were trying to make these action scenes feel like video game action scenes, but it starts to become very obnoxious after a while. I also didn’t really like Michael Cera’s performance in this. Compared to everyone else’s over the top acting, his performance felt very bland. The best part about the movie would have to be Mae Whitman. Because I have a crush on her. Also, Chris Evan was pretty cool too. I really wanted to like this film, but it’s just too much for me. This is Edgar Wright’s weakest film. - MegaSoulhero
Shall we play a game? Wargames is a movie that I don’t hear too many people talking about. The performances in this are really good. Even Matthew Broderick who can sometimes be a hit or miss actor. I haven’t watched it in a while, but I was thoroughly entertained all the way through. The writing is good and the story is good. Definitely worth checking out. - MegaSoulhero
Of all the video game movies that aren’t based on video games, this one is the most creative. The entire movie is shot to look like a first person shooter. We’re looking through the eyes of a character as if we’re playing as him. I thought that was very clever. Watching this through this perspective doesn’t make it feel like we’re watching a movie. It’s an experience. It feels like we’re actually part of the action. The way they do that is very impressive. I really enjoy this movie. It is such a thrill. - MegaSoulhero
This is actually my favorite Spy Kids movie. But they do set the bar pretty low. This isn’t a good movie. It just tries too hard to be 3D and throws in a bunch of random CGI crap at us. The visuals are extremely terrible. Even worse than than the first two films. The reason I consider this to be the best Spy Kids film is because at least I found some entertainment. There are certain scenes that get so ridiculous that it makes it hard for me to not get invested. The other movies I mostly found boring. This one is unintentionally hilarious. Especially Sylvester Stallone’s performance. This is a bad movie, but at least it’s fun to watch. Can’t say the same for Spy Kids 4. - MegaSoulhero
Pixels is an Adam Sandler film. Which means it sucks. I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t anything to enjoy about the film. The visuals are nice I guess. I also thought Josh Gad was very enjoyable. But that's about it. It still has the same bad Adam Sandler humor that we’re used to. There are also a ton of scenes that don’t make any sense. When I first saw trailers for this movie, I thought it looked pretty cool. I saw the film and was very disappointed by it. I don’t hate Adam Sandler as a person, but his movies are usually hard to watch. Hopefully Hotel Transylvania 3 will be good. Oh wait. No it won’t. - MegaSoulhero
