1 Mario Mario, originally named Jumpman, is the main character of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, created by the creative director and video game designer at Nintendo of Japan, Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario has appeared in almost every Mario game, including games in spin-off series as a playable character, with few exceptions including New Super Luigi U, Luigi's Mansion games, Yoshi's Island games, and similar counterparts. He is the most iconic character in video game history and is Nintendo's unofficial mascot. His franchise has grown to be the most successful video game franchise of all time.

Introduced in "King Kong" (1981), the character Mario leads a legacy still today as one of the most recognizable game characters in arcade history and has games made after him every year.

2 Dr. Robotnick

AKA "Eggman", Dr. Robotnick first appeared in "Sonic the Hedgehog" in 1991, ever since, Dr. Robotnick has been a main-recurring villain in the series.

3 Gordon Freeman Dr. Gordon Freeman is a fictional character and the protagonist of the Half-Life video game series, created by Gabe Newell and designed by Newell and Marc Laidlaw of Valve Corporation.

Gordon Freeman was introduced in 1998 with the series "Half-Life". Today the game is considered one of the greatest of all time and the 3rd is highly anticipated, but there's really no insight on it's creation.

4 Luigi Luigi, originally a palette swap of Mario named Green Mario, is a major character featured in video games and related media released by Nintendo. Created by prominent game designer Shigeru Miyamoto, Luigi is portrayed as the slightly younger, taller fraternal twin brother of Nintendo's unofficial mascot Mario, and appears in many games throughout the Super Mario franchise, often as a sidekick to his brother.

Luigi, brother of Mario, was introduced in "Mario Bros. " (1983). Mario is one of the most recognizable game characters of all time, but Luigi follows right behind and deserved the #4 spot.

5 Shang Tsung Shang Tsung is a character in the Mortal Kombat fighting game series. He is one of the few original characters, debuting in the first Mortal Kombat arcade game, in which he served as the final boss.

The boss-villain of "Mortal Kombat" (1993), Shang Tsung continues resurrecting in the series with the most amazing mustaches in fighting games.

6 Dr. Wily Doctor Wily, full name Albert W. Wily, is a video game character and the main antagonist of the original Mega Man series.

Dr. Wily first appeared as the main villain in "Mega Man" (1987). Still today, Dr. Wily will appear as Mega Man's recurring enemy.

7 Solid Snake Solid Snake is a fictional character and one of the main protagonists of the video game series Metal Gear by Hideo Kojima. He is a legendary soldier cloned from Big Boss's DNA, who is sent to infiltrate and investigate the titular weapons in an effort to stop a potential war.

Beginning his great role in one of the greatest shooting series in "Metal Gear" (1987), Solid Snake has been a fan favorite for many years in the shooting genre and continues to blast away enemies in the Metal Gear series still today.

8 Sgt. Avery Johnson

Who could forget the fowl mouth Sergeant from the Halo games. Sgt. Johnson has been apart of Halo sense the beginning in 2001 and still continues to be a recurring character aside Master Chief and Cortana.

9 Captain John Price

Another shooting-game favorite, Captain John Price made his first appearance in "Call of Duty" (2003) and gradually appears in Call of Duty sequels here and there.

10 Andrew Ryan Andrew Ryan is a fictional character in the BioShock video game series developed by Irrational Games. He serves as the primary antagonist of the first half of the first BioShock and a minor character in its sequel, BioShock 2.

The Man of the Year himself, Andrew Ryan made his first appearance in "Bioshock" (2007) and is praised by several game critics as one of the best game characters ever created.

11 Soda Popinski Soda Popinski is a fictional Russian boxer from Nintendo's Punch-Out!! He first appeared in the arcade version of Super Punch-Out!! in 1984 under the name Vodka Drunkenski before being renamed Soda Popinski in Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! for censorship reasons. Soda's offense consists of throwing super fast uppercuts and occasionally bringing out his soda bottle and drinking it to refill his stamina. The player can knock away his soda bottle which ends up angering him and unleashing a barrage of uppercuts.

Soda Popinski's mustache is my personal favorite of the Punch-Out! Boxers that have mustaches and it's awesome!

12 Wario Wario is a character in Nintendo's Mario series who was originally designed as an antagonist to Mario. His motives are driven by greed and he will take the side of whoever will give him the most pay. Although he may seem like just a mean man with no heart, he does have a very tragic past.
13 Dr. Eggman Doctor Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik is a fictional video game character and the main antagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog series, created by Sega.
14 Waluigi Waluigi is a lanky self-centered, brusque young lad as he is considered evil and the main rival of Luigi. Waluigi is shown causing local havoc in most games he appears in alongside his partner Wario.
