An UNDERTALE Review

Hello everyone! Today, I want to review one of my favorite games of all time: Undertale. While it is typically hated on because it is "overrated" or has a "bad fan base," I think that it's a very good game which I highly recommend. I'll try not to include spoilers so that anyone can read this review without knowing what happens in the story before they play the game. Also, this is all based off of my personal opinion, and your thoughts on the game may differ from mine. If so, that's fine. With that said, here we go!

1. The Graphics

Undertale looks like an Super Nintendo Entertainment System game in my opinion, or maybe a SEGA Genesis game? It has that pixelated style to it, which I really like. I prefer pixelated graphics over realistic graphics because I usually play games to escape from reality, and it's just easier for me to do so when I play a game that has pixelated graphics. All the designs of the characters and the textures are very detailed (detailed =/= realistic). I think the graphics are pretty good.

2. The music

I personally think that the music is the best part of Undertale. The tracks are powerful, setting up the perfect mood for what is currently happening in the game. For example, "Megalovania" really makes you feel like you are really having a bad time, and "Waterfall" sets up a very mysterious vibe. My favorite song from the game would have to be "Hopes and Dreams," but I've already talked about this song before. See my remix of Best Video Game Songs if you'd like to hear my thoughts on it.

3. The Gameplay

I think that the game is really fun. It's a perfect mixture of turn-based RPG elements and bullet hell gameplay. It's a very good concept that I haven't seen in any game I've played before. I also like how you can pick 3 routes in the game as well: the neutral route (you kill some people but spare some people), the pacifist route (where you don't kill anyone), and the genocide route (where you kill everyone, and I mean everyone!). I like how the genocide route is extremely difficult, as if Toby Fox was trying to turn off players from going on that route. I think that the gameplay is fun and unique. The only downside I have with this game is that after you do all 3 routes, there isn't much replay value like other games have.

Conclusion

Overall, I think that Undertale is a fun game with great gameplay, outstanding music, and good graphics. The two downsides I have with the game are 1. the lack of replay value for two of the routes: pacifist and neutral and 2. the story feels like one of those "friendship is magic" stories. As much as I think that type of story is good, it's so overused. I didn't even mention the wide cast of lovable characters, as I thought I would spoil at least one thing about the game if I talked about them. Anyway, I would definitely recommend this game to absolutely anyone. I'd give Undertale a 9/10.

This is a very good review. Even though I disagree about the "friendship is magic" part, this is only because of our different opinion and is not a problem of the review itself personally. - Eclipsmon
