Best Fighter Aircraft of World War II
This is a fast and the most powerful aircraft engine of ww2 and it took a great pilot to fly one.
It was a jet plane.
If it had been fully developed as a fighter we Brits would be talking German and wouldn't be permitted BREXIT!
I love this jet and its superior weaponry, speed and I just love this jet
This aircraft is my favorite of all time. It has amazing speed and performance, and also range, and set records for the altitude it could achieve: around 41,000 feet above earth!
Eric Brown flew 14 marks of Spitfire, most versions of Mustang, boyfriend 109 and FW 190. His quote sums it all up "The Spitfire XIV which entered service 5 months before the P-51D... was superior to the P-51D in EVERY combat category except initial dive speed and range" Dozens of other pilots USAAF, RAF and the IAF (post WW2) who flew both types and German who fought against both all believed the Spitfire was hands down superior! So why vote for the P-51D if it was second best? Flying from England, Dogfighting over Berlin AND having enough fuel to fly home there was NOTHING to touch it, and that's what was needed to destroy the Luftwaffe in its own backyard.
Graceful and powerful, R. J. Mitchell's Supermarine Spitfire was the only aircraft in production before, during AND after the war. She was a lot more maneuverable than most other fighters, and she had some fairly nasty weaponry; 4x.303 Machine Guns and 2x 20mm Hispano-Suiza Auto-Cannons, to be precise.
The Spitfire is easily the best dogfighter of the war. The American fighter ace, William Dunn, who flew both types said that in a dogfight between the two, The Spitfire would win ninety nine times out of a hundred. The P51 is a good plane but totally overrated.
Very well engineered. Later marks had a powerful punch.
Spitfire, but better.
One of the best planes in ww2. The last type of aircraft were better than Mustang.
I have flown this plane many times. It's great.
The P-38 could outclimb any contemporary piston-engined fighter (I.E., contemporaries at comparable periods in time). It could out-maneuver any other fighter in the hands of a skilled pilot, as it could turn on three axes at once. (A less-skilled pilot would be better off in a Thunderbolt or a Hellcat.) It was as fast as any and faster than most. It had devastating firepower, a heavy armament in a concentrated area. It had great range and altitude performance.
This thing would kill either by just plain long distance, or it would chase its target upwards until it stalled and then would just completely tear it apart with its four 50 cals and its one 20mm all of these were at the nose which means long range accuracy. It could reliably hit and destroy targets up to a 1000 yds away with a normal fighters range being 100-250 yds.
Those twin turbocharged engines and long range make this fighter of choice for aces of WW2. Its also the most streamlined design and was far ahead of its time.
It could dog fight. Dive bomb. Strafe targets and take a lot of damage and bring you home safely. Although I'd rather fly the P-51, Spitfire and Lightning.
Its kill ratio says it all! Yes it is not as sexy as the Corsair but out performed it. It was also better at carrier landings. This fighter could take a beating too. Its range was also enhance by being a carrier aircraft. It also had great firepower. It has my vote!
This was a great aircraft, essential to destroying the A6M Zero.
Called the Ace Maker for a reason. Better plane than the P47.
A great bomber for US
This aircraft was a bomber of the ultimate first in atomic bombing. It dropped the first atomic bomb.
Even tough some of you might think that it isn't a fighter ,I have to say that it is still capable of being a fighter airplane.
