Top 10 Worst Arguments to Not Strengthen Gun Laws in the United States

The Top Ten
1 "It violates the second amendment"

If you're just going to mindlessly stand behind an outdated constitution because it's "so patriotic," I can't take you seriously. Sure, the constitution was modern for its time, but that was like... in the 1780s. We're living in the 21st century, and things have changed, and we should know better. The United States is not a perfect country with perfect amendments.

The Second Amendment gives us the right to bear arms. If you want to have a gun, you should have the ability to obtain one. I am totally for stronger regulations and better training, but an outright ban on guns would go against the principles that have been part of our society since America's inception.

2 "Guns don't kill people, people kill people"

What they completely miss is that guns make it easier for people to kill people. All it takes is a single flick, and a bullet faster than the speed of sound is launched at a rate that can penetrate nearly everything. Gun people are skilled shooters, yet they completely miss the point.

Guns don't kill people. People with guns kill people.

3 "It's un-American"

I really don't need to say anything about this, do I?

4 "Most mass shooters are mentally ill"

The fact that this is the case only proves that guns need to be more regulated. If guns are more regulated or banned, that means mentally ill people will have a harder time buying them. This argument contradicts itself.

I think there needs to be stronger background checks, especially in regard to mental health.

5 "Gun ownership does not correlate with a higher homicide rate"
6 "We can use them to overthrow a corrupt government"

Keep living in fantasies, gunners...

7 "Countries that have gun regulations have more crime"

This argument is so cherry-picked that it hurts. Yes, some countries with gun regulations have higher crime, but those are countries like Brazil or Somalia where there's civil unrest and/or a completely different culture. If you compare it to more equal countries like those in Europe with a somewhat similar culture, you'll see that Europe is faring MUCH better. The only countries with a higher crime rate than the US in Europe are Russia and Ukraine, and no, it's not because they banned guns.

8 "It won't stop people from killing each other"

No, but it will make killing people more difficult. Fewer shootings, etc.

9 "They are a great tool for self-defense"

There's a clear difference between real life and fiction. When you gun down a person in real life, they don't immediately fall unconscious. It can take minutes for the wounded to die.

10 "Some people need guns"

No one ever said no one was allowed to have guns. Officials obviously need them. But Brad Jones eating his Doritos in his basement in the depths of Alabama? No, thank you.

The Contenders
11 "We need them to be safe"
12 "They will take away our guns."
