Worst Mario Kart Games

The Top Ten
1 Mario Kart 8

The roster is idiot. You know you have a nasty roster when half of it is composed of crappy counterparts of baby characters, metals, and Koopa characters. It ruins the background when you are racing against variations of the same characters. If you want to add any character, make it more engrossing and replace those insane clone characters with diverse experts like Honey Queen, Dry Bones, Dry Bowser, Funky Kong, Diddy Kong, King Boo, and even 4 new characters called Dixie Kong, Fawful, Nabbit, and Kamek. We don't need Green Bronze Luigi or Mario and Peach clones either. End of rant!

The online in Mario Kart 8 is really bad, the worst of the entire series. You go into a lobby with some people, the game chooses THREE random courses that you can then vote on, and the course with the most votes wins. In any other Mario Kart game (except DS, as online was experimental), you can choose a course you want to play online from a list of ALL the courses in the game. After everyone chooses a course, it picks randomly from the suggestions. This is a HUGE step down from other games in the series, as you have to get lucky to play on the course you want.

Another problem I have with this game is the items. You can only hold one item at a time, where in most games you can hold two items at a time. Items are also based on distance from players, rather than position. This means someone in second place can be given three red shells, while someone in 10th place could be given a useless coin item.

The last major issue I have with this game is the battle mode. Instead of putting in actual battle courses, they have you battle on the race courses. This is fun, but race courses aren't the best for battling on. Every game with a battle mode other than this one has arenas made specifically for battle mode, and that makes the experience far better.

Overall, the game just seems less fun than other games in the series with many downgrades. I'd say the only reason this is worth getting is if you have friends to play online with. Play through the 50cc single player to unlock all the cups, then play with your friends on different tracks. It is not worth $60 in any way at all, get it used, wait for the price to go down, get it bundled with your Wii U (like I did), or don't get it at all.

2 Super Circuit

The tracks are pretty bland, due to being released on a relatively underpowered console. The VS and Battle modes are inaccessible in single-player and the online is way past dead. That leaves Grand Prix, Quick Run, and Time Trial, with Grand Prix and Time Trial getting boring very quick. The only mode that is replayable for the masses is Quick Run, which limits you to a single track. It still outperforms most other mascot fighters, but it's hard to compare to the other Mario games without getting a little sad.

I played this on the emulator a few times, and I can see why people consider this to be the worst Mario kart game. The steering is atrocious, and I‘m always hitting the walls.

I believe that this is the best portable version of Mario Kart. Sure, the graphics aren't the best, but it was on the GBA. I love the sprites. I think the coins were a great thing to bring back, and it has the nice classic SNES tracks on it too. Overall, I think this one is a great game, it may not seem like the best by today's standards, but it was great at the time and is still really fun.

All right. This game is crap! Seriously! The turning mechanics are horrible and its hard to know where you are supposed to go at times. The controls are horrendous as well. They should've waited until the N64 (Mario Kart 64 was actually GOOD). With the limitations of the SNES, they couldn't do much. Everything seems off and it isn't fun or chaotic like Mario Kart should be.

3 Mario Kart Tour

Why is this game getting cool characters like Pauline, Nabbit, Dixie, King Bob-omb and Funky? I look at MK8 and see half a roster of garbage in koopalings and babies!

I find the comments section hilarious Because most of these comments complain about the Koopalings being in it. Just because the Koopalings are in it doesn’t mean it is bad. The bad parts are the weird controls, loot boxes, the dreaded pipe, and the inclusion of Pink Gold Peach

People are complaining about the roster when the real issue is lootboxes and the overall pay to win aspect

I played the beta. It sucks. They even used the garbage roster from deluxe.

4 Super Mario Kart

Sure, the tracks are bland and the names aren't the most creative, but because the tracks are based on super Mario world and how similar they are, it does make a lot of sense. The controls do take some time to get used to, but when you do, they feel fantastic!

This one gets a slight pass because it was the first, but it still isn't great. We have three modes: the admittedly fun Battle, the one-time Grand Prix, and the competitive Match Race, which still has championships today. No joke, Google "match race super mario kart" and you'll get a whole host of races between top players. That's it, but it was the first.

I don't know why you guys hate it. Of course the tracks are flat and bland, but this game was made in 1992, so of course that's the case. Also, the graphic are very clean to me.

The tracks are Ice, Ice, baby. Due to the limitations of the SNES, turning is terrible. They should've waited 'til the N64 to make this...

5 Mario Kart 64

It's better than Sonic R... And that's the only quality it got.

Mario Kart 64 is easily the worst Mario Kart game. It was released too soon. While the tracks are good, the characters appearance are horribly ugly, as they're using fake 3D render (AKA they're sprites), the game can be glitchy, the controls are awkward due to the characters appearance, only one unlockable, but the worst of that is the AI that cheat.

Not only it's the worst Mario Kart ever but also, this is the most overrated game too. For this generation, Crash Team Racing did a much better job. Even in Nintendo 64, there is a much better game AKA Diddy Kong Racing.

This game is awful. Everyone says it's amazing but really it's crap.
Let me explain

The controls are crap due to the N64 controller being meant for giant hands.
The Rubber band A.I. is unfair like really
The tracks are awful all of them range from horrible to mediocre due to it being unfair cause the rubber band A.I.

And finally the controls...wait I mentioned that what I meant to say were..the controls...OKAY THE CONTROLS ARE THE WORST THING ABOUT THIS GAME! LIKE REALLY HOW DO I HOLD THIS?

Before you dislike this comment cause obvious reasons please note, you probably like this game cause of the nostalgia...no, you don't like this game cause it's fun, no you like it cause of the nostalgia...thank you now hit the dislike button you weird person who probably haven't played this game from the year it came out.

This game is indeed overrated In my opinion. A lot of it has to do with nostalgia. While this game was made in the 1990’s, a lot of things that this game tried to do are done significantly better in newer Mario Kart games. Some of those things include tracks, controls, and new features. Also, I think criticizing MK8 for it’s roster is unfair In my opinion.

What the hell? People are just Saying MK64 is the best game ever and is not overrated. They call MKWII overrated. What? MKWII has good tracks and is better than stupid Mario Kart 64. People just like it for the nostalgia. The tracks aren't even that good as they say, and they call MKWII's roster bad because It has the babies. Come on, the controls suck and people are still hyping over a game which has been around for 20 years!

6 Mario Kart 7

The motion controls suck. Also, the items are just too tacked on. It's home of one of the worst items in history, the Tanooki Leaf. On a typical Grand Prix gameplay, usually, I always get screwed up whenever I receive a Tanooki Leaf. I hate that item so much! Thank goodness it's gone in Mario Kart 8. The roster looks fine, Honey Queen is pretty awesome, but why do you have to unlock Wario, a starter character? First person mode stinks. NO VS MODE? Why? That's because Neo Bowser City stole that gameplay mode. No kart color customization or horn emblem sucks. Best tracks ever is the only redeeming aspect.

The only aspects I hated in the game were why do you have to unlock wario, a starter character, the insane tanooki leaf item, neo Bowser city, maka wuhu glitches, no vs mode, lack of horn emblem, no kart color customization, metal Mario, and a lack of waluigi. Outside these concerns, everything was fine. Honey Queen and Rosalina were cool in the game too. Metal Mario and Wiggler were the only unlockables I wasn't a fond of. Honey Queen is fun and quirky, Shy Guy ruled like a champ, Lakitu had too much of an important role, but his voice is all right.

They did not have enough time for Waluigi and Dry Bones, but for inferior characters like Metal Mario, and Wiggler, they had a lot of time. I don't mind Honey Queen and Lakitu being in the game. Honey Queen was only added to insert an extra heavyweight female character, but the roster deserves an 8/10 because Waluigi Pinball was a retro track, but with no Waluigi.

This game was horrible. They replaced Grumble Volcano with Koopa Beach. You hate stuff like PGP and Metal Mario? This game is how it all started.

7 Arcade GP

No rainbow road, lack of relevance to the series desrves number 1

This is an arcade that sucks.

8 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

If there is a worst games in a series list with only about 15 games in the series, then all of then are going to be on the list. That doesn't mean they're bad because they are on the list.

Mario Kart 8 deluxe is not a bad game the list is so wrong

You little turd!

9 Mario Kart Wii

Wait, people actually like this game? Are you joking me? How could people enjoy highly luck based gameplay in a series well known for using a decent amount of skill to win. The only skill this game has is not falling off the tracks.
The sideways Wii Remote/Wii Wheel is the worst controller we were ever provided for any entry in the entire series! I know there are other controllers, but how long did it take me to find that out without the Internet? Three damn years!
How would a character roster with MORE BABIES be good? How about also including 24 characters, but people only pick two?
And the online while it was fun, just not worth it for the type of game it is. I'd rather play Wi-Fi matches on the DS.

I used to love this game until it became the Melee of Mario Kart with people pretending it is the most advanced version of Mario Kart. It has a bit of that, but it is horrendously unbalanced and has two types of Battle Mode with only about 3-4 tracks each.

This game is borderline unplayable due to the fact that this game has the WORST rubberbanding out of any other Mario Kart game. It also introduced the WORST Mario Kart item in the series: the Thunder Cloud. The only redeeming qualities are Funky Kong, the POW Block, the Mega Mushroom, the music, and the tracks.

The motion controls suck. Also, the items are just too overpowered. It's home of one of the worst items in history, the POW Block. On the third lap, usually, I get blue shelled and then get hit by the POW Block. It only redeeming factor however, are the tracks and the character roster.

10 Mario Kart for Virtual Boy

Would be number 1 if it was released

Glad this was cancelled

Okay, let’s get this straight, this was not even RELEASED! IT did make an appearance on a magazine.

The Contenders
11 Mario Kart DS

This game is carried by nostalgia, because when you analyze it the content aged horribly. First, the track selection, the new tracks are overrated because people think "they are great for DS standards" sure, but for Mario kart standards they're mostly average, the retro tracks are the worst they ruined many of them especially the GameCube ones. The roster is tiny, say what you want about 7 but at least the new "weird picks" provided variety, can't say the same for this one: 13 characters with one of them being limited, Koopa, a long time veteran, not returning and a non Mario character who took the slot over a deserving veteran. Online is also lackluster, balloon battle is overrated with weird stages that either look dull or don't suit the gameplay of the game, using the microphone is annoying and the "ghost" feature when you play multi-player is the most unfair thing in every battle mode because it allows you to pick who's gonna win after you lose.

I don't know which I like best the ds or gamecube Mario kart. Ds has nice characters it's the first one to have retro tracks that I love and it have very good retro tracks. The new tracks are not so good but it have my favoritte track yoshi circuit. The gamecube has two people in one kart and that's so cool and it was on my favorite console how I will fight to the death for but both of this games are good.

This game was my childhood along with Mario party ds and it's sad to see people hating it for no particular reason

There selection of Retro Tracks is not varying good

12 Arcade GP 2

In the indoor part of a theme park I live near, it had one of these arcade machines. I played it and the handling is terrible

This is an arcade that doesn't even fell like a Mario kart game at all.

The announcer is distracting

13 Double Dash

The controls are bad it feels like driving a tank on ice, every time I do a race I always have to run into a stupid banana that is like right in the middle of the track and can see a mile away simply because I can't steer properly, green shells are always coming out of nowhere or bouncing back and always hitting me, drifting was annoying with having to flick the analog stick in the opposite direction to where it sometimes doesn't even register and you get no turbo, listening to the person on the back of the kart screaming his/her head off when you get hit by something that makes you lose your item makes you wanna bash your head in and that Bowser Shell can go make friends with a giant sledge hammer.

When You play characters as Mario And Luigi and other matching characters. The animation is just the same and horrible. When I play 150cc, I only see some HEAVYWEIGHT characters also trying to win. I rate it horrible! 3/10

Extremely good. Ignore the bad comments, the quality is good, much better than MARIOKART DS and in addition, it beat MARIOKART8 Deluxe. This and Mariokart 7 are the best games to roam the earth.

I don't want to get this game. I strongly prefer the N64 version of this game.

14 Arcade GP 3
15 Arcade GP DX

I never even heard of this but it's bad.

16 Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit

Gimmicky thing that happens to be cool applies to the three arcade titles and this. Nintendo, please don't replace regular Mario Kart with this. It isn't terrible, just not Mario Kart.

A Mario Kart game without Yoshi?! And they shoehorned all seven of the damn koopalings in the game as opponents? The hell?!

Oh, boy. You get to compete against the koopalings. I had enough of that garbage in Mario Kart 8!
