Phillip Reviews: A Wrinkle in Time (2018) [SPOILER FREE]

Phillip873 This review will be shorter than normally because it will not contain any major spoilers!

"A Wrinkle in Time" may not have been the most hyped up movie of the year, but many people did have quite some expectation because Disney produced it. The general consensus was that this was a terrible movie. But if I'm being completely honest, I don't think it's as horrible as the reviews say, but this is still not a very good movie at all. Let's see why I think that.

Plot Summary:
"After the disappearance of her scientist father, three peculiar beings send Meg, her brother, and her friend to space in order to find him."

The Story:
The plot and story work of this movie honestly really sucks. It seemed to use a lot of cliches and tropes in it, as well as predictable elements that you see coming from a mile away (which I won't spoil here even though you could probably predict them if you watched). They also seem to introduce some characters out of nowhere which I thought was weird. I can't really blame the movie for also having a really confusing story that makes zero sense, because the book it's based on a book with a really confusing story that makes zero sense. It is heartwarming at some points (but cliche) and relatively inoffensive, so I can't really hate it, it was just a very sloppy storyline.

The Acting/Characters:
Chris Pine was probably the best actor in the movie to be honest. He isn't in it too much but I did like the scenes he was in for the most part. Oprah wasn't that bad either but not amazing. There is a lot more but the rest of them mostly range from kind of bad to passable. As for the characters, like I said before, some of them are introduced and we don't learn too much about them, for example this boy (forgot his name) joins the main character Meg and her brother Charles Wallace and we don't even know much why he comes expect for that he just wants to. I seriously could not understand why this random dude goes on some weird "Rick and Morty" type adventure with some girl he doesn't know too well. Most of the characters do develop a bit throughout the movie but not too much at all.

The Special Effects:
This is the absolute saving grace of the movie and kept me from thinking even less of this movie. I thought all the scenery, effects, musical score, and all those things were amazing! The worlds they visit are all very imaginative and I thought some of it had a bit of that Disney magic feel to it. I also like all the trippy effects and the designs of the creatures. It's honestly too bad this movie wasn't really good, because it looks very, VERY nice!

Extra Thoughts:
Not many extra thoughts. Some of the movie had some boring points where my brother and I were cracking up at stupid stuff. If I had to say something else, it would be that at least this movie doesn't expect you to read the book before watching the movie, unlike other book adaptions.

My Rating: 4/10 (Mediocre)
IMDb Rating: 4.0/10
Rotten Tomatoes Rating: 42% Critics / 36% Audience
Final Thoughts:
It really is a shame that "A Wrinkle in Time" has a pretty crappy story with underwhelming characters, because this movie is visually amazing. I don't think it's as horrible as some people make it out to be. It's just that if you are going to see this movie, see it for the cool and imaginative visual effects, instead of its confusing and cliche storyline.

Hope you guys liked the review, I'm probably going to see Spielburg's "Ready Player One" next.
