Is Starlight Glimmer and Sunburst's Relationship Abusive?

Hello pegasi, unicorns and earth ponies. It’s Twi here (not that Twilight, you idiot). How’s it going? I hope you like criticizing things because that’s what we’re going to do today.

Right. Let’s get down to it.

I am sure you must be familiar with My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, unless you live under a rock in a post-apocalyptic land where humans are considered a slave race. I’m sure you must have seen S5, where the main villain was a selfish and whiny bitch who threw the entire world into chaos, caused multiple wars that included child soldiers, killed thousands of innocent ponies and let ruthless dictators dominate just because her friend moved away. Instead of killing this pony, the Mane 6 thought it would be a good idea to include her in their group. She never gets any punishment for her actions, and she even causes MORE chaos like switching people’s cutie marks and causing more trouble. Drinking game: Take a shot every time Starlight does something stupid. You will die.

The show isn’t even My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic any more. It’s basically The Starlight Glimmer Show. They should have ended it as S4, or even at S5 (just with a different villain). It’s a literal dead horse. Starlight does EVERYTHING from being the protagonist of the premiere and finale of S6 and S7. Uh, hello? Since when is she the main character? That was supposed to be Twilight Sparkle! The show absolutely wasted itself away. It’s not a funny, charming, cute cartoon about ponies anymore, it’s about a bunch of anthropomorphic horses being jackasses to each other (the new episodes suck, just watch ‘Parental Glidance’ or ’28 Pranks Later’) where the protagonist is a self-centered, bitchy narcissist who has no qualms about hurting innocent people. The likable characters have been pushed away, giving the limelight to a character that should have never existed in the first place. All the episodes are focused on her like ‘Starlight meets Maud Pie’ or ‘Starlight and Trixie get into a fight’ etc. You wanna know what it reminds me of? When Lloyd was added to Ninjago (well to be fair Ninjago was a crappy show before him anyway) and he began gary stu-ing the place and everyone went OMG LLOYD! WE GET A BONER EVERY TIME WE SEE YOU OMG!

I swear, I’m going to find that idiot whose idea was to add Starlight in the show and send them to an island where there is nothing but the staff of sameness. This way, they will forever be reminded of their mistakes.

Sorry, I’m getting off track here. Yeah. The main purpose of this post was to explore and examine Starlight’s relationship with her best friend Sunburst (the friend who moved away), and why I believe it is unhealthy and abusive.
So, let’s begin.

We first see Starlight and Sunburst together in Starlight’s flashback.

Starlight and Sunburst are having fun.

Suddenly, some books fall over.

Over Starlight.

Starlight closes her eyes in terror.
But she does not get crushed.

She opens her eyes, and sees something. Sunburst, using unicorn magic, levitated the books away from her. Sunburst saved her life.
Instantly, Sunburst gets his cutie mark.
He is then sent to Celestia’s School for Gifted Unicorns.
Starlight stares on.

This is what began Starlight’s turn to darkness. After her friend went away, she grew bitter. Instead of moving on or attempting to make contact, she blocked him out. She looked at the situation as if it was someone else’s fault, and not hers.

Later, we learn that Sunburst never attempted to contact her because he was terrible at magic. He was scared of facing Starlight after all he had done. Eventually they are able to reconcile, and throughout the show we get some ship tease between the two.

This is where I first see the signs of an unhealthy relationship.

Sunburst claims he was ‘scared to face Starlight’ because of his weakness. You can say I’m overanalyzing, but that sounds like something someone would say if they were in an abusive relationship.
People in abusive relationships tend to be scared, submissive or eager to seek approval from their abusers. Why would Sunburst be scared to face Starlight? Aren’t they best friends? I mean, if I failed at something I would talk to my best friend about it because I know she’ll have my back. Friends are for support, love, moral guidance and more. But it seems Starlight and Sunburst do not have this type of relationship. It looks like they have something much darker and horrific.

Sunburst does not see Starlight as a ‘friend’. He sees her as someone whose expectations he should live up to. If he does not, he has failed her and hates himself.

Don’t believe me? Let’s examine a similar relationship.

Another relationship in the show that involves one person seeking love from another one is Diamond Tiara and Spoiled Rich.

Diamond Tiara is absolutely terrified of disappointing her mother, to the point she will put herself in danger to earn approval. It is implied her mother is domestically abusive as well, which is an unfortunate issue in real life with kids and parents. Diamond Tiara, ever since her birth, was raised with Spoiled Rich telling her what to do, what to say. It’s tearjerking. When Diamond Tiara fails to live up to her demands, she is abused to the point of tears. But then, the CMC help her realize that she has WORTH, and she is not entitled to be in a relationship with an abuser. She learnt to stand up for herself, and that she had the power to make it all stop. This is frankly why that episode is one of my favorites, and why Diamond is one of my most liked characters.

Do Starlight and Sunburst have the same relationship? Yes. Sunburst, like Diamond, has someone in their life who they are controlled by. This person claims to be their ally but is I fact the complete opposite. And unlike Diamond, nobody sees that Sunburst is not happy in this relationship. Everyone treats it as if it’s normal, but it’s not.

And this makes me believe there is more to Starlight than we see.

More darkness.

We don’t know how Starlight was as a child. However, given that she felt jealous instead of happy for her friend due to his success, felt the need to control and force everyone to follow her ideals and lied, manipulated and deceived many people into a cult, we can deduce that she’s shallow, selfish, intolerant, bigoted and stupid.

As a child, was she like this to Sunburst? She looked like a friend on the outside, but really was emotionally abusive towards him in such a way it broke him, and he felt like he needed her love and attention. And given that Starlight will go as far as to destroy the world, she could have done horrible things to him.

Don’t believe me yet?

Let’s focus on Sunburst now.

Sunburst, Starlight’s ‘best friend’, joined the school. After that, however, he made and didn’t try to make any contact with Starlight. Why?

What if, after he joined the school, he realized he didn’t need Starlight anymore? What if he felt happier without her? It was amazing, being on his own, for once not having to be scared. He was free.

And Starlight? Instead of trying to contact him, or at least send a letter, she made a cult. A cult of people of who she could lie to, abuse, and emotionally manipulate. A cult of people on whom she could feed off, like she fed off Sunburst. Starlight doesn’t need a friend. She, as an emotional abuser, needs a slave. A slave of people who will take whatever she throws at them. And I think that’s why she really never bothered to contact Sunburst. She already had a new supply of victims.

It gets worse.

Defenders of Starlight say she did love Sunburst. I call it all a lie.

Now, we all now Starlight caused multiple bad things to happen. She let Nightmare Moon, Chrysalis, Sombra etc all have their ways. One question: Where was Sunburst in all of this?

If she really cared about Sunburst, would she put him in a future like this?

If she really cared about Sunburst, wouldn’t she think ‘What if Sunburst saw me do this? What have I done?’

No. That proves she does not care about him.

She is willing to throw his life away just to get revenge on Twilight.

See? Sunburst is nothing to her. To her, he is someone who’s emotions she can play like a Ken doll, and if he isn’t living up to her prospects he’s trash.

She doesn’t care if Sunburst saved her life. She doesn’t care that, if it wasn’t for cutie marks, she’d be dead. All she cares is about fulfilling her own sadistic desires. Sunburst saves her life, and she repays him by ruining his life multiple times.

Starlight never sees herself in the wrong. It’s never her fault. She’s always the victim. She doesn’t realize SHE was the one who was responsible for her and Sunburst’s rift, by not making contact or moving on, instead getting angry at him. Sunburst would get his cutie mark eventually, and it was inescapable. She got angry at a thing that was so stupid and petty. Like I said above, friends are for support, love and moral guidance. Starlight and Sunburst have none of this, not even a single shade.
Look at the way Sunburst acts. He’s always nervous. Shy. Weak. Tense.

These are all signs of someone who has escaped an emotionally abusive relationship. He fears her a lot more than he fears anyone. If he and Starlight were so close, why did he never even try to make contact? Why didn’t he cry into her arms when he had a dream crushing handicap? Why didn’t he ever do anything? He is the one blamed and vilified for being ‘selfish’ and ‘leaving his friend’. To Starlight, his company to her means more than following his dreams. If she can’t have him, no one can. She’s possessive, jealous and manipulates emotions as a failsafe. She’s a complete monster.

Hasbro wants us to see Starlight as a woobie with a dark and troubled past. What she really is, is an emotionally abusive control freak that hurt many people for so long, and when she was found out she tried to destroy the whole world. And never is she ever called out for this – instead she was put on a pedestal, called a hero, allowed to join the good guys and receives love from every pony she sees.

Starlight should have never been added to the show. Before, it was only and always Twilight Sparkle, Pinkie Pie, Applejack, Fluttershy, Rarity and Rainbow Dash. The 6 original elements of harmony. It should have always been like that. Adding her in the show goes against all the previous facts that there are 6 elements of harmony, no more and no less.

I can’t even watch this show anymore. It’s unbearable.

Sorry to end this post on a sad note guys. But it’s true.

What’s your opinion on Starlight? Let me know in the comments.

I'd rather have princess celestia banish BOTH rainbow thrash and starlime (starlight is too sour for a new character) to the moon or somewhere else where they BOTH won't have to mess up MLP - visitor

Yeah MLP seems to be going on for too long. Even the Simpsons joke that writers add in new characters just to make the show better. Starlight seemed to be that character. And the fact that she had a nice loving father, yet left him to enslave an entire town. I don't find her sympathetic to like her and she's too much like Twilight for me to get too attached to her. - RoseRedFlower

Yep. And she locked up the Mane 6 in a room for hours without food or water or sunlight while forcing them to listen to a recorded message which the UN defines as torture, and blamed Sunburst for everything. Fudge her. - TwilightKitsune

@Twilight Kitsune which episode did that happened? - visitor

Wariolady in her debut episode she does that. Not to mention her other crimes include child abuse, emotional blackmail, sociopathy and ruining MLP for me. And they made her Mary-Sue ness 10000x in the finale, I mean Chrysalis can defeat an Alicorn but not Starlight Glimmer? Bulls***. - TwilightKitsune

Definitely. katara did the same thing starlight did. getting off scott-free for their criminal behavior... *sigh* - visitor

Mlp used to be great, but now I absolutely hate it. why did starlight glimmer have to ruin everything being a Mary Sue and an evil psychological throughout the series, who got angry over losing a friend? I would love to see Starlight glimmer and rainbow crash get beaten up by chuck Norris and the whole entire show dies off already. Also I am sick of the fan base and the show itself and its been going on for way too long so therefor the show needs to die off and both characters should be terminated by the terminator and be banished to the moon in my opinion. - visitor

P.R.E.A.C.H. - TwilightKitsune

What does P.R.E.A.C.H. Stand for twily? Not being rude. Just asking - visitor

Nothing, I just meant the word itself - TwilightKitsune

I think y’all are over analyzing this- it’s a kids show. Even so, it seems like Sunburst’s personal problem to me. They were like 5, there’s no way starlight was abusive - Meredy_FT

Even kids shows can have a lot of depth to them, ask Avatar The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Teen Titans, WITCH or Steven Universe. And I doubt they were 5, if they were it would make Starlight look more of a petty bitch than ever. They were around the CMC's ages then, who (according to Equestria Girls) are around teenage years. So yeah, she could have been abusive and I have a lot of evidence to back it up - TwilightKitsune

They really need to end MLP now. It's getting really dragged to no end - MLPFan

G5 is in the works as of now (oh, and I heard Pinkie's gonna be a Pegasus in this one) and hell yes. Should've ended it at S5 with Chrysalis as the villain with Starlight Glimmer never existing - TwilightKitsune

I don't hate MLP, but I do agree that Starlight, I mean, S***light should never have been on the show. There should be an episode in S9 where the Mane 6 witness S***light treating Sunburst's like s***, & confronting her about it. At the end, S***light gets sent to Tartarus. - RoseWeasley

If somebody comes up with the idea to kill Starlight off in S9, they should get a raise. - RoseWeasley

*hands young S***light bleach* If you drink it, you’ll get an awesome cutie mark. - RoseWeasley
