Worst NHL Trades Ever

The Top Ten

1 Wayne Gretzky, Mike Krushelnyski and Marty McSorley for Jimmy Carson, Martin Gelinas, a 1st round pick (Jason Miller), 1st round pick (Martin Rucinsky), another 1st round pick (Nick Stajduhar) and 15 million dollars

why did they do that idiotic thing? - 2234

What were they thinking

Trading Wayne Gretzky is awalys a bad idea. Enough said ok

2 Chris Simon, Mike Ricci, Kerry Huffman, Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Peter Forsberg, 1st round pick (Adam Deadmarsh), 1st round pick (Wade Belak), future considerations and cash for Eric Lindros

What I think makes this trade worse than Gretzky's is that Lindros didn't live up to the hype (according to me), and that Avalanche went on to win two Stanely cups while the Flyers were left empty handed. - Juicepaketet

This is a truly the worst trade of all time. True, trading an icon like Wayne Gretzky is just a poor all around decision... But look at how well the Avalanche came out compared to the Flyers in the Lindros mess.

3 Kris Draper for 1 US Dollar

They traded a future 4 time cup winner and one of the best defensive forwards in the league

This is not true

4 Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha
5 Alek Stojanovs for Markus Naslund

The Penguins are still wondering what they did, Naslund came out to be captain of the canucks and is the leading scorer in the history of the Canucks. He also became the best player 2002!

6 Joe Thornton for Wayne Primeau, Marco Sturm and Brad Stuart

I remember the last 3 years Thornton was in Boston, they competed for 1st place, then they traded Joe and it took them 2 years to get back into the playoffs. The Sharks on the other hand were 13th out of 15 teams in the West at the time of the trade and had the 2nd most wins in the NHL after the trade. However, it should be pointed out that the Bruins have since won a Stanley Cup and the Sharks didn't.

Only time the current season's MVP was dealt. And dealt for a bag of pucks

7 Roberto Luongo, Lukas Krajicek and a 6th round (Sergei Shirokov) for Todd Bertuzzi, Bryan Allen and Alex Auld
8 Jaromir Jagr for Anson Carter
9 Tom Kurvers for a 3rd Overall Selection (Scott Niedermayer)

Kurvers was a pretty good player but he was nearing the end of his career and Niedermayer went on to be one of the greatest players of his generation.

10 Jaromir Jagr and Frantisek Kucera for Kris Beech, Ross Lupaschuk and Michal Sivek

Yeah, this one definitely has to rank as one of the worst ever!

The Contenders

11 Scott Gomez, Tom Pyatt and Mike Busto for Ryan McDonagh, Chris Higgins, Pavel Valentenko and Doug Janik
12 Artemi Panarin and Tyler Motte for Brandon Saad and Anton Forsberg
