WonkeyDude98 Analysis: Shake It Off vs Bad Blood + Taylor SwiftWonkeyDude98 I have something I need to admit. I get that I've already damaged my reputation enough with reviews such as my Carly Rae Jepsen, Problem (vs Focus), and Fancy reviews. Now it's time to lose whatever followers I may have had left.
I don't hate Shake It Off. I actually kinda like it. I'll get to why, but first I'd like to say that her much later hit Bad Blood could not even hope to get the same respect from me. I'm going to review Shake It Off and Bad Blood, compare them in order to show Bad Blood's faults, and then quickly summarize TayTay Swizzle.
Vocals: This is rather unimportant but still somewhat notable. In Shake It Off, Swift sounds carefree and happy. How can I condemn her for that? In Bad Blood she just screams out these monotonous, nasal notes with a little too much control. Also, I've never heard Kendrick Lamar sound so...bored. It's not his worst appearance (that would be either F***ing Problems or Give It 2 U but I'd rather pretend these don't exist), I'll give it that. But nonetheless...
Lyrics: This is where we start getting into huge differences. Shake It Off was about haters (yawwwwwwwwwwwwwwn). Nothing much more. But I'll give her this: she sounds like she doesn't care. And not in the bored way. Bad Blood was about whiny teenage angst with Katy Perry. It's disgusting, petty, and dramatic. Except Kendrick Lamar's verses, which delve into forgettable nothingness.
Beat: This is the absolute splitting point. Shake It Off's beat had energy and vigor. It was pumping and it was a presence. Bad Blood's beat....there's no doubt Taylor Swift has never sounded worse. The snares are thin, the gang vocals are just awkward, the bass buildup leads to nothing, and there's this grating synth on the bridge. It's meant to sound intimidating, but that doesn't work when the lyrics are whiny and dramatic, does it? This creates a huge gap between the beat and the lyrics and makes each side infinitely worse.
Overall, I give Shake It Off a very strong 3/5, and Bad Blood a 0/5. There's absolutely no reason to listen to Bad Blood over Shake It Off. Despite Bad Blood, I like the direction Taylor Swift is going. I liked Shake It Off, Blank Space, Style, and Wildest Dreams, each one more than the next, but unfortunately the quality just gets sucked out of all of them thanks to overplay. I gove Taylor Swift a 4/5. *don't shoot me* This is WonkeyDude98, signing out.
"She sounds like she doesn't care"
She may sound like she doesn't care, but she does. Sounds =/= actions. - Puga
Bette than teen drama I guess. - WonkeyDude98
Yeah, I hate Shake it off and I didn't think it could get worse, then Bad Blood came along. - Martinglez
Meh... - WonkeyDude98
As a diehard Swiftie I'll be the first to admit: Bad Blood is an objectively terrible song. - visitor
I used to like Bad Blood until I got a taste in music. Seriously, why does Kendrick sound like G-Eazy trying to be Kendrick? - WonkeyDude98
The remix version of Bad Blood I hate it, but the original I can give it 2.5/5 which I think it's okay but the lyrics is too terrible. - BeaM456
The original I'd still give a 1/5, mainly off of its still p***-poor production and whininess, but at least she isn't dragging down more talent with her. - WonkeyDude98
I think this is where your quality started to build up - ProPanda
My quality started to build up after "retirement". - WonkeyDude98
Your quality never built up donkeynude - Puga
I actually like Bad Blood (NOTE: DO NOT REVEAL THIS TO THE METALHEADS)! Lol.
I used to. Now, I can't seem to. - visitor
