81 Loudness Wars

Many albums (even indie ones) have to be mastered loudly through compression. Think it's not a big deal? Compare new albums to CDs released in the 80s/early 90s. Set them at equal level of volume and you'll discover that older albums have more punch while newer albums can sound harsh and cannot be listened to for long periods of time, which is a shame because there is new music that is pretty good but ruined by the mastering. Although released from 1999, Californication (Red Hot Chili Peppers) is an example of a "casualty" of the loudness war as it is overly compressed and goes into the red most of the time. In addition, Metallica's Death Magnetic mastering has drawn ire from even the casual listener for its poor mastering. Although mastering isn't wholly blamed on the person who mastered it, because the producers/mixers are responsible as well.
