The Contenders: Page 2

21 Ronald Reagan Ronald Reagan Ronald Wilson Reagan was an American politician and actor who was 40th President of the United States from 1981 to 1989 . Prior to his presidency, he was the 33rd Governor of California from 1967 to 1975, following a career as a Hollywood actor and union leader .

Are you for real? He was a great president. 1. ) He basically ended the Cold War 2. ) Helped get the Berlin torn down

American economy was booming. It wasn't anything like an oligarchy, horrific statement. - Therandom

Ronald Reagan was arguably the best president in United States history. The facts are clear. He is a much better president than this list has him as and also was a very well liked president. He won two blowout elections and is reffered to as the great communicator for his ability to constantly reach across the isle and do what was right for the nation. Reagan finished up the Cold War (despite not being in office at the time) and helped to make America respected in the eyes of the world. His vision of a city on hill truly describes his presidency. He grew our military and economy in his eight years as president. I find it sad to see that some people don't understand that Reagan's agenda allowed the United States of America to be recognized as the strongest nation in the world after the mess he walked into. He set a high bar for future presidents and truly did the right thing time and time again. For those who don't care for him, read Killing Reagan! He was a great man and a great ...more

Iran-Contra, raising taxes on the poor and middle class, Savings and Loan scandal, Busting the PATCO--the air traffic controllers' union--the union's complaints were legitimate), catering to the Religious Right, ignoring AIDS, refusing to crack down on Wall St excesses, reducing funding for college students, attempts to dismantle reasonable environmental laws, tripled the national debt, forced all social security disability cases to be formally reviewed because he believed that most of the beneficiaries were cheats (cost a lot more money than was saved. ) spent money on Star Wars missile defense system that was regarded by expert scientists and engineers as unrealistic and risky, promoted 'trickle-down economics'--which put a lot more money in the hands of the wealthiest.5% with little benefit to the rest of us... Closed the mental institutions and woefully, inadequately funded community mental health centers, creating a huge homeless population.

He is an awesome president! He ended the cold war, He was a famous actor, The oldest president at the time, Always telling jokes.

22 John Tyler John Tyler John Tyler was the tenth President of the United States. He was also, briefly, the tenth Vice President, elected to that office on the 1840 Whig ticket with William Henry Harrison.

To date, the only president to be kicked out of his own party.

John Tyler wasn't even elected.

I don't even know who this guy is

This guy is only famous for

- being kicked out of his own party
- having too many kids
- having a gigantic nose - DoroExploro13

23 Martin Van Buren Martin Van Buren

Typical. Blame the man in charge! The only reason Van Buren is considered a bad president is because he was blamed for all of the atrocious things Andrew Jackson done in his presidency. I also pity the foo who thinks Obama is Satan or other nonsense the media tries to convince us is true. People nowadays are just so ignorant and feeble minded to believe in propaganda that bashes out Obama like Fox News and all that baloney! Seriously, what is this world coming to!?!?!?

He continued Jackson's failed policies. If you look at the data, just as many, if not more, native Americans were killed during Van Buren's administration than in Jackson's! - marmalade_skies

The person who bashed on Andrew Jackson needs a history lesson. He didn't even hate Indians, they were attacking US citizens so if course he removed them. Try to actually read up on history before blaming others

Van Buren wasn't that bad of a president, he just had the bad luck of being elected into office after Jackson. Jackson's removal of the National Bank caused financial ruin, and Van Buren was the one who had to deal with it.

24 James Polk James Polk

The idea of starting an unnecessary war with Mexico, only to conquer land to could have the complete pacific coast united was awful, and annex Texas, who was Mexico territory, despite being colonized by Americans due to illegal immigration also promoted by United States, was also terrible

Greatest ever president! The Mexican did nothing with the land there were only 20,000 people living there. Now they of course would like it back!

The only president to support the extermination-not just treating unfairly-of actual citizens. See Mormons being hunted and eventually kicked out of their homes in the early to mid 1800s.

Bias against the Mexican people. - JustAnAccount

25 Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison was the 23rd President of the United States; he was the grandson of the ninth President, William Henry Harrison.

He was a great leader. Take him off this list!

Well it's not like he's known anyway...

As if he gets recognition

26 Harry S. Truman Harry S. Truman Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States, an American politician of the Democratic Party.

PEOPLE STOP! He wasn't racist because he dropped 2 nuclear weapons on Japan! If we didn't drop those nukes the war would have majorly escalated resulting in even more deaths, most likely twice the amount of the deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It was a tragedy all those innocent civilians had to die, but these are the consequences of war. The only real racist act president Truman committed was forcing all those Japanese citizens into concentration camps.

No. It was a Soviet Invasion that happened the same day that ended the war - AlbertAngrySami

He wasn't racist. Germany and Italy had already surrendered, and that left Japan. Emperor Hirohito was INSANE. He would have let his whole country die before he would surrender. Truman had to do it otherwise Japan would have kept killing American, British, French, and other countries troops. The Japanese soldiers would have kept dying as well. So in a way, he saved so many people while also introducing the atomic bomb to the world, maybe making other countries afraid to fight us for a little while.

Our country has hidden countless things from the public for centuries. This has been done to hide many of our countries actions that were considered unfavorable or undesirable in nature. During and after WW11 there were things considered unethical and crimes against humanity, but naturally the majority were focused on the SS and we didn't want anyone including our public to see or realize what many of our leaders or military members did during that period. They then publicized a false propaganda to our nation that appealed to us all.
The reality was much different though and President Truman shouldn't have actually even been in a vice-presidential position. There was a scandal in place that allowed this to occur and when Roosevelt passed, he was then in place. He had many adversarial character flaws throughout his life and didn't handle them well. What many people get told about how the a-bombings saved countless lives was actually a false statement. They were in the process of ...more - Woodward

27 William Harrison William Harrison

He was alright even though he served a month

He shouldn't be one this list sure people are judging him on what he said but that's not what he did as president he died too soon to do something to affect the us in a good or bad way

He say this" I can survived in rain without a coat." I swear he got sick and didn't wear a coat at all! I was showing and bragging off. Is he God of Jesus? No! He is so stupid.

To be fair He was only in office for a month so he couldn't really do anything good or bad - Randomator

28 John Adams John Adams John Adams was born on October 30, 1735 in Quincy, Massachusetts, United States. Adams served as the president of the United States from March 4, 1797 to March 4, 1801. He died on July 4, 1826 at the age of 90.

John Adams was an amazing man, but he wasn't a very good president. He didn't spend enough at the capital, he never really did anything for America, and worst of all, he passed the Alien and Sedition Acts which were terrible. - Kevie16

He was a great president, he stopped us from starting a war with France.

I always thought he was a humdrum, everyday kind of president, that is until I realized and remembered that he passed the Alien and Sedition Acts which were supposedly unconstitutional. I say this because it violates all of our 1st amendment rights and freedoms granted by the Constitution, which shouldn't be abridged.

John Adams was basically Hitler.

29 Chester A. Arthur Chester A. Arthur Chester Alan Arthur was an American attorney and politician who served as the 21st President of the United States; he succeeded James A. Garfield upon the latter's assassination.

He was never elected. He was rather still a vice president under his precessor James Garfield's laws. The only reason why he was ever president because Garfield was assassinated. He was so unpopular that the Republican Party denied him nomination for a full term. Even Mark Twain wrote that it would be hard to make Arthur's (vice) presidency better. Also, those sideburns will grow to meters.

Actually he didn't want to get nominated for a second term. He told his friends not to help. - Jordan01

Arthur was not bad, but enforced garfiled. He came from the New York senate

This guy was great! Why is it a big deal deal that he wasn't elected. Are we forgetting about the state of the union address?

He wasn't a very good president: he wasn't even elected!

30 Rutherford B. Hayes Rutherford B. Hayes

He fought against corruption like no President before!

Says it in the name: he B. Hayes all the time; listens to and obeys his elders. What a nice guy!

For real he was good

31 William Taft

He should be higher on the list than 22. You seem to forget he almost destroyed the Republican Party. He was non existent as President, and was responsible for raising tariffs and breaking treaties. In fact he was so unpopular at the time that his mentor, Theodore Roosevelt ran against him, bolted the Republican Convention and ran as the Progressive Party candidate. Thus led to the Presidency of Woodrow Wilson.

Fattest president that ever lived he was the 27th president he was 350 the only thing smart he did was add more banks for Delaware since he said that was the best state Delaware was also the first state.

Too big. - JustAnAccount

32 Dwight D. Eisenhower Dwight D. Eisenhower Dwight David "Ike" Eisenhower was an American politician and general who served as the 34th President of the United States from 1953 until 1961. He was a five-star general in the United States Army during World War II and served as Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Europe.

One of the best. He was truly concerned for the country and it's people.

Though Eisenhower was a military genius, this man's response to ANYTHING was to nuke it or overthrow it. Chinese conflict at Qeymoy Island, "Let's drop a nuke! " Lebanon Civil War..."Drop a nuke! " Democratically elected officials who WERE NOT murdering their people in Iran, Guatemala, Tibet, Indonesia, Cuba, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo! Some of these countries had just democratically elected new leader, but their new leaders could pose a threat for some corporations in the U.S. so Eisenhower had them overthrown. Some of these coups were epic failures causing the deaths of many innocent civilians and led to wars that caused the deaths of millions more. More than Truman ever "killed" during the atomic bombings.
He also refused to do anything about Senator McCarthy and his witch hunts, nor did he even touch the crumbling situations in the American South.
This man was not a great president and should go down in history as such.

Who's the communist that added Eisenhower to this list?

Are you kidding me? This guy was one of the best presidents - Randomator

34 Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. As a leader of the Republican Party during this time, he became a driving force for the Progressive Era in the United States in the more.

He shouldn't be on this list, wanting to preserve nature, helping stop the Russo-Japanese war, shot in the chest and gave a 90 minute speech, wanting some equality between whites and minorities.

To the guy who wrote the comment starting "I wish we had this guy today..." You obviously did not understand Teddy Roosevelt very well. Just because he was an outdoorsman does not mean he was a low life name-calling NRA puppet like you. Teddy actually had much more in common with Barack as far as standing up for the working man than he would have ever had in common with someone like you. I hope you realize in your comments that you are talking about a classy leader with his face on Mount Rushmore, and not some gun goon like yourself. Frankly, I think the Secret Service should be interested in your comments and I hope you land in jail because that's where you belong.

WHAT?! Why is he on this list at all?! He was like the best president there was!

35 Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson Thomas Jefferson was an American Founding Father who was principal author of the Declaration of Independence.

So he owned slaves everyone back then owned slaves, it does not make him a jerk or a bad president. And if he wanted to free his slaves the law back then stated he could not. Today just be glad it is not like this today. I understand if you don't like that but it happened and this stuff happened and nothing can erase history. Plus he trusted his slaves, one offered to cook for him most people would say no but he allowed the slave to cook for him and one of the foods was Mac and cheese. So just stop worrying about things that happened 200 years ago - lbelle0527

36 James Madison James Madison James Madison, Jr. was a political theorist, American statesman, and served as the fourth President of the United States.

Madison, while not the worst, still did a very poor job as president. He made it nearly impossible to make changes to the Constitution (which has very outdated parts to it in this day and age) and launched the U. S. into war with Britain, which the Americans were completely unprepared to fight. These were very unwise choices.

He is a goody baddy guy

I'm the only 1 that commented thus1

This son of a bitch tried to invade british north america back in 1812. he needs to be higher. he sent an american army to burn down york in what is now modern day canada. James Madison is a jerk.

37 James Monroe James Monroe

He was the first to have the idea of buying Cuba and Puerto Rico from Spain, and it was an idea that remained on the American government for a long time, but when Cuba starts to search for their independence, the idea was not abandoned, but instead, they help Cuba and the Philippines and after their received that islands as a war payment and because makes no sense help a country and after keep it for themselves, unless that was the Philippines, they gave the full independence to Cuba and took Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines, but Cuba remained under the shadow of United States, and they forced Cuba to include in their constitution the Emenda Plat, that conceives to USA a permanent military base in the Island, Guantanamo Bay, but the good life has ended when Fidel Castro took power, and that brought many troubles to all American continent.

And think that all this as started with an idea of James Monroe

if he had not thought about that, the world would have been much ...more

He was so imperialist, that thinked the United States had to have a colony in Africa, Liberia

38 William McKinley William McKinley

The right spot for him. Good: Won victory over Spain in the Spanish-American war, probably the first time USA ever won an international war excluding American Revolution, but he annexated Hawaii.

He was an imperialist and with the old dying idea of manifest destiny had to annex an independent native country, the Hawaii

Yes, I know that the Hawaii had by far more Americans than natives, but it was not reason to annex a country!

The perfect spot him.

39 Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865 . Lincoln led the United States through its Civil War - its bloodiest war and its greatest moral, constitutional, and political crisis .

Your kidding me? Lincoln is awesome! GET LINCOLN OFF THIS LIST!

We can't. There is 44 US presidents. All of them are on here. Therefore, to the people, Abraham Lincoln is the greatest president of all time. You're American, right? Well, I'm a 12-year-old Canadian, thank you very much. LEARN!

Why must we always put up walls against each other (figuratively), the Republican Party that Lincoln was a part of was in no way associated with the platform of the modern Republicans, in fact, it opposes it in many ways. Why would a Democrat be mad that Lincoln was the best president? Political parties are not what defines a person or his/her beliefs. One party is not necessarily "better" than the other at a given time because there are many give and takes as well as countless viable perspectives for each issue. I find that Republicans in particular tend to be especially partisan and devious. No matter how I spin the circumstance, it always comes points to that as the conclusion. Many people, and especially many of those participating in this list need to check what they believe. It is truly wrong to blindly follow an idea that you do not know enough about, and exponentially more so to impose it on others. Do not believe in things that are poorly sourced or not sourced at ...more

The person who put Abraham on this list needs to smack themselves in the face, Lincoln is AWESOME!
