Top 10 Video Games with the Worst Endings

After battling through countless minions, solving elaborate puzzles, and enduring heartbreaking story twists, the least you can ask for is a rewarding, fitting conclusion. But alas, not all game developers share the same sentiment. Whether due to time constraints, budget issues, or just poor creative choices, some games roll credits with an ending that leaves you wondering, "Is that it?"

Think back to the times you've been let down by an abrupt twist, a confusing cliffhanger, or an ending that just didn't make sense. Consider those moments when you sat there, controller in hand, staring blankly at the credits rolling down your screen, wishing you could have those precious hours of gameplay back.

Gather up your memories of disappointment, dust off your critique hat, and have some fun voting for the top offenders in this video game ending hall of shame.
The Top Ten
1 Ghostbusters

Congratulations!

You have completed a great game

And proved the justice of our culture

Now go and rest, our heroes!

2 Mass Effect 3

Not even the extended cut can fix this garbage ending. This ending not only makes no sense whatsoever but relies on deus ex machina and other garbage writing devices. All for an ending that, in the end, tells you your choices didn't matter.

The ending contradicts the lessons taught in previous games, sacrifices realism for no reason, last-second plot device character, and the six are uncannily similar. For better or for worse, the extended cut is much better.

The ending had to be fixed by a mod because it was so terrible! The happy ending mod is almost mandatory to have installed before you play it. Otherwise, it will ruin the entire trilogy.

3 Ghosts 'N Goblins

This ending is worse than all endings in the world! Even than Halo 2 and Sonic Adventure 2!

4 Super Mario Odyssey

This is even worse than Super Mario Bros 2's ending because instead of trying to rebel against Bowser when he knocked away Mario for wanting to marry her again, she waited for the fight happening, then rejected both Mario and Bowser despite Bowser having much more reason to be rejected than Mario (He kidnapped her and forced her to marry him). Sure, Super Mario Odyssey is good, but the ending didn't worth the effort, especially when it's another plot about saving a kidnapped princess, and before being rejected by her this time. And of course, the rest of the ending doesn't make any sense. I mean, how could Mario be happy after being rejected? If they tried to make it funny, they completely failed.

In my opinion, Super Mario Odyssey definitely had the worst ending of every Mario game created. Even if Mario and Peach were getting married, Bowser will STILL kidnap her.

5 Halo 2

What are you doing up there? Sir, finishing this fight... A. you fell off and almost died in Halo 3, B. You didn't even get the chance to blow up the ship... Worst ending ever...

6 Grand Theft Auto San Andreas
7 Super Mario Bros. 2
8 Far Cry 3 (Bad Ending)
9 Super Fire Prowrestling Special
10 Drakengard
The Contenders
11 Sniper: Ghost Warrior

Seriously, I mean just snipe the guy and then GAME OVER! I felt like somehow the devs had taken a good concept and destroyed the hell out of it with the ending, they should have been a lot more imaginative.

12 Silent Hill 2 (Dog Ending)
13 Gears of War 2
14 Command and Conquer 4: Tiberian Twilight
15 BioShock

Disappointing for me, that's one of the ways the sequel one-upped the original.

16 Ghostbusters: The Video Game
17 SpongeBob Squarepants: Operation Krabby Patty
18 Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
19 Mirror's Edge
20 No Man's Sky
21 Lord of the Rings: Conquest

The whole entire game followed no storyline whatsoever, but the endings? Really?

22 Skate
23 Life is Strange

I absolutely love this game, but the ending felt so rushed and really disappointed me. The game had been so clever and so enthralling until the ending, which felt lazy. Why would you end a game by forcing players to make a choice that does nothing but destroy the prospect of a sequel? Sacrifice your best friend and be forced to attend their funeral or sacrifice the town and have to look at all the death you've caused... Both endings make you feel like an ass! Worst ending ever :(

Good story, bad ending, and an example of bad game design with what they did at the end.

24 Tony Hawk's Underground
25 Mother 3

Mother 3 doesn't have a bad ending so much as an ambiguous one. Hinawa proves there is an afterlife, so are the characters dead, alive in a destroyed world, or in Lucas's new one? Are Claus and Hinawa even alive?

The Dark Dragon neither killed anyone nor destroyed the world. It just restores it to its original form and heals it from every harm Porky has caused.

End of the world. After all the game put us through, after all Lucas has suffered, Earth is destroyed. HAL, why?!
