2016 (MMXVI) was a leap year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2016th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 16th year of the 3rd millennium, the 16th year of the 21st century, and the 7th year of the 2010s decade.

The charts have continued to take a spiral down since January. Most of the great songs on Billboard either fizzled out (Love Yourself, In The Night, 679, Adventure of a Lifetime, Here) or got stale (7 Years, Work, etc.). There's almost nothing redeeming about the charts now. Fifth Harmony is still in the top 5, Meghan Trainor's worst hit yet is still in the top 20, Jacob Sartorius debuts, Drake's awful new album makes charting impact, Thomas Rhett is still in the top 50, and Rae Sremmurd, RiFF RAFF, and Iggy Azalea are all releasing albums.

This isn't even halfway through the year. - WonkeyDude98

The year 2003 was the last year of real music in my personal opinion, I have no hope for 2017 and really want 2018 to be a good year as that's the year I graduate from high school and hoped that music would be as good as the 70s-Early 00's, but unfortunately can see 2018 as well as 2019 being bad years as well which sucks. Now their was bad music from those years as well, but are considered as a great song compared to any song in 2016. Most songs sound the same and there were so many god awful so called artists that charted high in 2016 like Charlie Puth, Shawn Mendes, Lukas Graham, Meghan Trainor etc. 2016 even makes 2010-2015 look good. This year can be seen as the breakthrough year of let's see how many annoying noises in one song and unfortunately also with the deaths of Prince, David Bowie etc, and start of Jacob Sartorius. Hope that scum of a singer in Jacob goes completely downhill in 2017. No effort was put into any song in 2016. So this year that's just been was not a diverse ...more

What has become of music is horrible. Pretty much the whole industry is just a bunch of auto tuning, fashion-first, safe, slow mess. You don't have many options this year if you want to rock out. Even the bands like Green Day, The Offspring and Blink 182 have gotten noticeably slower with their music. U2, the band that was a musical genius, isn't very good anymore. Things in 2016 for music are looking rotten and terrible. if I owned a band. I would offend these people up to the point where they would be throwing a fit.

Not a single upbeat song. Not a single good song with talented singing or impressive music. Just those beats I see in almost every respective song. By respective I mean its genre, so I keep hearing the same crappy house beats! 2016 so far has shown no good music. - sryanbruen

As always, the mainstream is boring as hell. That's never changed, like ever. Most of the albums I've been looking forward to flopped. This year would probably be one of the worst years if it wasn't for Bowie's Blackstar and Nick Cave's Skeleton Tree. Aside from those two releases, there hasn't been any big releases that have been both good and popular. Albums like Blonde and Lemonade were critically acclaimed but were so middle of the road. - Evafag

Justin Bieber dominates the charts amidst the deaths of many musical legends, most notably David Bowie. And we are just in the first half of February! Loss of hope on whether this year can avert a musical equivalent of Idiocracy.

Music lost its meaning. Rap began to overshadow, and they all soon became about all the same things. Pop songs were becoming more EDM, and they were all just theme song of love. Coldplay was no longer Coldplay, just Chris Martin. Even Adele and Rihanna were getting repetitive. And this was truly the year where I really started to hate Twenty One Pilots. We also lost two of the greatest rockers ever; Bowie and Prince. On the bright side, Green Day came back full throttle, Metallica was hitting harder than ever, and Bowie released a masterpiece before his death. Terrible year for the modern artists, but older artists helped to fix it a bit. - naFrovivuS

I find it rare where I'm even ok with a song this year. It's very disappointing music for me (if you can even call some of the songs music). The song writing's poor, rhythm's cheep, and low quality. I often even like pop music, but this year it's just so poor. I also like a lot of other songs to, but every song is poor from rap, to pop, to dance, and rock if you can even call it that. Probably the only hit song I've like this year is Can't Stop the Feeling and it didn't even go number 1!

I agree this is the worst year for music, no diversity in music, just plain and dull. I am tired of hearing house music, it all sounds the same. I want more diversity in songs, also, terrible singers like Meghan Trainor, Justin Bieber, and Drake top this year. The only good thing was the return of Green Day, I like their new song. - AnimeDrawer

Honestly 2015 wasn't that bad. This year, there is almost nothing good, and the few good songs either flop instantly or get killed by overplay. Half of the songs on the radio are seriously not music. And the worst part; this year is still getting worse fast.

Just awful. I can't believe an okay Sia album can beat every song made in 2016. Bland, boring. Everything sounds the same.

Thank you. I thought I was the only one who thought that everything sounded bland and the same in 2016. - sryanbruen

This year went either way if you knew where to look. Mainstream music just seemed to be diminishing in quality and the good artists only get little recognition. Overall, the music for this year was much better than the overall music in the last 4 years. Seems like artists are starting to become more focused. - Mcgillacuddy

Prince died so did David Bowie and more famous people like Muhammad Ali and Alan rickman it is a really bad year

Into July now and I still don't like a single song from this year. All songs are either autotuned, very bad singers, music is very lacking, singers have no emotion and songs that get very stale because of these factors. - sryanbruen

Prince dies, Justin Bieber's charts go through the roof. Need I say more?

Everything started to suck around late-2013, and things got worse when 2014, 2015, 2016, & 2017 came around! And now, since it's 2018 and things could possibly get worse by next week, but who knows? 2019 will be $#! TTIER, and the world is going to get flushed down to the $#! TTY toilet by the 2020s. If I were you... I miss the 2000s (especially 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011 and 2012), I miss those years, Although a lot of people hated those years, I was born in 1999, so I wasn't even a teenager in those years, SO I just though they weren't that bad, 2009 was terrible though...

2016 isn't a bad year by any means, but at this point "Justin Biebers" name is loathed and I personally haven't seen so much death in music and the year isn't even halfway done. And to those saying "wait for the year to end", trust me, it's gonna get worse, before it gets better, but it still beats 2013-2015 by a LONG shot. So eh. Oh and Rihanna released "Work" that's a song I will never like.

Early 2016 and it is already this bad. - ItsDaWorldOfSNuGGLEZ

The one year to have a complete lack of good material and a slew of music legends dropping dead. I'd like to forget this year ever happened.

This year hasn't even ended yet. Why are you people already putting it on the list? This is why I hate nostalgia. It completely makes people ignore the good music that's out today and only makes them focus on the bad music that's out today.

A few good hits came out and fizzled. Now we are left with Meghan Trainor, Fifth Harmony, and Jacob Sartorius

Worst year of Music. At least last year was better not good. But this year there is not a single good song

Can Justin Bieber and Katy Perry die already?

Pretty sad year all around. At least 2015 had a few jams I can say that I liked. 2016 is such a timewaster.

Songs like Cheap Thrills and Can't stop the feeling still in the fing Top 20.

Drake and Justin Bieber having about 2-3 hit songs in the top 20

stupid songs about Pandas, broccoli, and black beetles. Seriously, HOW THE HELL IS BLACK BEETLES AT NUMBER 1 RIGHT NOW?

Pukestain Shawn Mendes.

Chainsmokers and 21 pilots still cracking the top 20.

Another year with too much country

I really hate being that guy but come on, seriously, where is the variety? Say what you want about 2015 but at least that year had some variety and at least some songs worth caring about. Even the bad stuff of 2013-2014 was at least worth talking about and fun to tear apart. 2016 showed us what was coming with the celebrity deaths of David Bowie, Prince, and many others. Most of 2016 is filled with stuff we've already seen ...more

The largest number of deaths in rock, I think.
