2016 (MMXVI) was a leap year starting on Friday of the Gregorian calendar, the 2016th year of the Common Era (CE) and Anno Domini (AD) designations, the 16th year of the 3rd millennium, the 16th year of the 21st century, and the 7th year of the 2010s decade.

Whilst I don't think this has been the worst year "ever", it has definitely been the worst in the last 15 years. In 2001, the only bad thing that occured was 9/11. 2009, there was the Swine Flu and a lot of celebrities died. 2014, there was Ebola and a few major stars died then. But this year, this year has just been awful all round. Not only has there been an even bigger list of celebrities dying, but Trump was elected, the Zika virus, the incidents at Dreamworld and Disneyland. Can anyone think of one GOOD worldwide thing about this year? I can't. Why did this year have to have so many bad things happening? I want this year to end as soon as possible so we don't have to think about it anymore. 2009 was pretty awful but then it got much better in 2010. So I hope next year will pick things back up again.

Usually, people are over exaggerating when they say that "Oh this is the worst year in recent memory" but no, 2016 however gives a REAL meaning to that. This was truly just the most downright ugly and most depressing year that I can even remember in my short life. Even years like 2001 having 9/11 were less depressing than this garbage. At least 2001 wasn't constant scaring after constant scaring.

2016: Trump becoming president, brexit, North Korea, huge mass shootings, huge police shootings, Orlando mass shooting, celebrity deaths, honey beas added to endangered species list, great barrier reef on the verge of dying, Hurricane matthew, constant earthquakes in Italy etc., Russia, ISIS, Zika, the HUGE amount of celebrity deaths, etc.

As for me, I basically just did nothing except get depressed, stress myself out over sickly by school, and so much more ugliness.

Seriously, this year was a gigantic mess that never should've happened. We've had worse years in ...more

I swear this year was cursed. It was full of mass shootings and thousands got killed in Syria, many died in the Brussels attacks, a lot of celebrities passed away, Brexit will affect the UK, and not in a good way, why did so many terrible things happen this year? I thought 2015 was depressing, and then this happens! If 2017 follows up to be the same, then that's it. I'm giving up with life. There are just too many killings going on and it just has to stop. It's no surprise why the suicide rate in people today has got so much higher.

This may be the new 2015, If so, The nightmare starts over again.

Everyone make this #1. This year is crap. Even 2015 was less depressing.

Where to start with the miserable pile of crap? I began the year with breaking one of my fingers in a vacation to Lake Tahoe and I also caught a cold later. During May-June portion of this year, it went great for me, then it fell apart in July. I made a huge mistake by leaving the school that I had friends in and good teachers, I wanted to leave it because it was to rowdy so I picked out another school in up-state Moraga and it sucks. The world tore itself apart and there was always a celebrity death on the news every week or month or so. The olympics was plagued with issues and problems and terrorists attacked many cities and killed many innocent lives. My family really didn't celebrate any holidays and the election was as bad as it gets as it shoves it in our face every day. I lost all of my creativity and I really wish I could go back in my glory days of 2007 and let's have hope in 2017... - andrew02

I hated this year so much! My dad died, too many terrorist attacks (Nice, Orlando, Lahore, Brussels, etc.) occurred, an innocent 2-year-old got killed by an alligator, boatloads of celebrities died (David Bowie, Prince, Christina Grimmie, Muhammad Ali, Alan Rickman, Patty Duke, Gene Wilder, etc.), too many innocent police officers were killed in the line of duty, two terrible presidential nominees (Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton) were elected, 2 of my cats died, the Zika Virus disabled (and sometimes even killed) so many babies, a gorilla got shot to death just because a young boy entered his cage, tons of people where I lived felt sick (even in June/July, a time where there is usually hardly anyone is sick), an amazing user of TheTopTens died (DisneyAnime1234), most of my best friends moved away, and so many others.

The only good things I could find about this year were that Pokemon Go was founded, I went to Disneyland, the Cubs won the World Series, and the weather wasn't ...more - anonygirl

The Zika Virus, Donald Trump becoming president, the Orlando Night Club mass shooting, an alligator killing a 2 year old, Hurricane Matthew, and the celebrity deaths (Prince, David Bowie, Christina Grimmie, Muhammad Ali, John Glenn, etc.). Hopefully 2017 will be better.

Also, why are people voting for other years, just because the music, movies, or video games sucked? You care more about a song or movie then a life? GROW UP!

To heck with 2016! Good thing that year will never come back!

So far, this year is god awful! I've pretty much lost all of my friends, I am struggling in school both academically and socially, the music this year is absolutely unbearable, today's generation is sickening... I could seriously just go on for hours.

I hated 2016! This was one of my least favorite years, the others being 2009 and 2012. My dad died, two terrible presidential nominees (Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton) were elected, there was an outbreak of the Zika Virus, a virus that gives babies birth defects and sometimes even kill them, so many mass murders and terrorist attacks occurred (Brussels bombings, Orlando night club shooting, Nice, France accident, etc.), beloved celebrities died (David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Patty Duke, Prince, Muhammad Ali, etc.), a 2-year-old got killed by an alligator, two of my cats died, black men were killed by police so much that innocent police officers were killed in the line of duty, a gorilla got killed just because a child fell into the cage, my best friends moved away, and many others.

The only 3 good things were that my sister now has a successful careers, Pokemon Go was invented, and I did not get bullied or punished.

I know these things happen every year, but not to the ...more - anonygirl

This year went to a new stage of hell. My friend attempted suicide and nearly succeeded. She went into a coma and when she woke up, she forgot about everything, even about me. Now things will never be the same between her and I. Also the amount of celebrity deaths, terrorist attacks, diseases, failure and stupid memes are at a point it's driving me insane. - ItsDaWorldOfSNuGGLEZ

I feel you dude. This year really hit most of us hard. I could list a lot of problems surrounding 2016, but I've already made a post on that, so I'll let that pass. - CrimsonShark

This year was horrible. Lots of celebrity deaths, terrorist attacks, the presidential election, and bad pop and rap music. The only good thing I can think of is some bands I liked released new albums but that is it. I hated this year from beginning to end. Hopefully 2017 is better. God forbid that it gets even worse.

Trump Became President, I Nearly Died 22 Times, An Alligator Killed An Innocent 2-Year Old, Mass Shootings, Bombings, The Turkey Airport Bombing, The Turkey Passport Bombing, The Paris Bombing, Orlando Night Club Shooting, My Family's Mad AT Me For No Reason Ever Since The Start OF The Year, I Turned 12 AND Now People Insult Me Just Because I'm 12!, I Was Gonna Commit Suicide Many Times, Clown Attacks, Zika Virus, Hurricane Matthew, Many Celebrities Died, My Life Is Ruined, I Broke My Leg, Forget It, I'm Gonna Stop Counting.

This is why 2016 was the worst year for me:

-I got falsely accused for stuff that I didn't do at a party. (While this is a very common occurrence in the family), it lead to the point where MY ENTIRE FAMILY ENDED UP YELLING AT ME
-I got sunburned WAY too easily (even on CLOUDY DAYS! )
-My mom's overprotection level went UP TO ELEVEN when it comes to sunscreen (I had to wear it EVEN WHEN I WAS JUST GETTING IN AND OUT OF THE CAR)
-I didn't go anywhere fun for my summer vacation
-I went on a boring cruise to Boston and Bermuda and while I was in Boston a lady was being rude to me when I had trouble with the subway
-I got sick after my cruise and was sick for 2 days
-My mom confined me in the house the ENTIRE SUMMER due to reason #3

Well it is 2017 right now. I hate it. I wan't to go back to 2009 when I was 6. I did not have to worry so damn much about school and stuff. I also whit he could travel back to 1988 to see Gretzky and the Oilers lift the cup 1989 to see good old Lanny play for the Flames. Hockey was much better back than.

It's only past the first quarter and the year already sucks. As gossip and fashion don't concern this, we lost Rickman, Bowie and Prince, who were very influential people, Brussels, Lahore and many other places got attacked, Donald Trump is still popular, the Zika Virus is spreading rapidly and the stock market has suffered a crash. What's there to like about this year? - Swellow

Zika virus in South America, ISIS, many attacks on innocent people (Brussels, Lahore, Orlando, Istanbul, Baghdad, Nice, Dallas, Quetta etc.) Too many celebrities dead (David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Prince, Christina Grimmie, Leonard Cohen etc.), North Korea launching nuclear weapons, Brexit, hurricane Matthew, multiple earthquakes in Italy, very corrupt and bad Olympics in Rio, many accidents (Train accidents in Germany and Italy, helicopter accident in Norway etc.), the killer clown sightings all around the world and maybe the worst presidential election in the US history, with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump as candidates and Trump winning. That's in short the year 2016.

Don't forget about the violence in Chicago way out of control this year. I live in the city and so far, it has been over 700 homicides in the city and it's significantly higher than last year at around 492. So, 2016 is the deadliest year in Chicago. - Kierre2

This year started crap and by the next few months, it somehow got worse. Lets see what happened since three-quarters have passed:

The deaths of David Bowie, Alan Rickman, Glenn Frey, Viola Beach, Prince, Nick Menza, Muhammad Ali, Gordie Howe, Christina Grimmie, Anton Yelchin, Abdul Sattar Edhi, Matt Roberts, Tom Searle and Gene Wilder is only a small amount of casualties I could think of right now. To further add injury, the amount of attacks have been ridiculous. Brussels, Lahore, Orlando, Istanbul, Dhaka, Dallas, Nice, Munich, Kabul and Quetta have all resulted in many innocents getting needlessly killed.

There's a Zika Virus outbreak, ISIS is still running amok killing everyone regardless of Muslim or not, there have been a lot of disappointments this year (Namely "Batman V Superman", "Suicide Squad", "X-Men Apocalypse", Captain America's "Hail Hydra" in the comics, "Mighty No. 9" and "No Man's Land"), ...more - CrimsonShark

I thought 2013 and 2014 were the worst years of my life, but 2016 is at the top of the pile. My life is so utterly ruined. It was only a matter of time before my school friends abandoned me WITHOUT EVEN SAYING ANYTHING. School life has become crappier in a number of things, mum want to throw me out for someone else, more family spats, I have no mental stability and on top of that I'm failing. What a terrible 2nd half to the year. - ItsDaWorldOfSNuGGLEZ

I didn't hate this and 2014 at all. The summer of 2014 and 16 were when I went on really cool vacations. These 2 years also gave me some of my favorite movies (not songs). However late 2016 I was dealing with some type of depression because I was a freshman who lost his friends, and was just awkward. Even in marching band I was bad at it at the time and I wasn't liked much. One of our cats died in December too, but other than that the beginning of the year didn't suck. Honestly the 2010s have been getting better because my family used to be dirt poor and my mom lived in a small apartment, my dad lived with his drunk friend. - Phillip873

I'm sorry, I know everyone is just gonna be like "hey no way this is the worst year, ust because of popculture etc." but still just think of the terrorism the france and orlando stuff the dead celebrities (RIP Prince and David Bowie) and also Trump being elected, the anti-trump protests making a uproar, tensions with north korea, and this yet was really stressful and honestly almost scary, if I'm being honest the music wasn't that bad and two big hit games came out (Clash Royale and Pokemon Go), and that's another reason this is terrible... Pokemon Go, it isn't a bad idea, but seriously, you could see people tresspassing and staring at their phone while walking around. It was a crazy, horrible year, yeah I know it wasnt the great depression or a world war or the holocaust, but honestly it felt like hell. I'm gonna tell my kids someday " I survived one of the worst years in history:2016

Honestly 2016 has been horrible, personally and real life. I've pretty much strained my social life down to nearly zero, friends and family friends are both facing bad things. Not to mention EVERY SINGLE HORRIFIC EVENT THAT HAPPENED IN 2016. No way nothing can go worse than this, even if it is horrible next year, still sticking with 2016 being the worst year. I'm officially going to declare my self 2016phobic, or whatever the word is. - Aisu

Any year from the 21st century shouldn't be on here, apart from 2001 the only reason people vote these years is because they don't like modern music or anything modern at all.

I hate 2016, but I do not hate it because I hate everything modern. I hate it because of violent terrorist attacks, chaotic protests causing violence, and innocent police officers being killed in the line of duty. - anonygirl

Before 2016 happened, 2014 was at the top of the list. The David Bowie died and 2016 shot up from the top 20 to the top 10. Overall, I think we can all decide that this was overall an unpleasant year. Hopefully 2017 won't be as bad. 2009 was depressing with the recession and the celebrity deaths but 2010 and 2011 were better so hopefully this year will follow the same routine as 2010 and 2011.
