The Top Ten
Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer wrote the three greatest thrash albums that year (Well, three greatest in the Big Four beside Rust in Peace). Not only that, but Iron Maiden wrote a pretty good album as well.
Raining Blood, Angel of Death - Slayer, Master of Puppets, Welcome Home, Orion, Battery - Metallica, Peace Sells - Megadeth, Pleasure to Kill - Kreator, Merciless Death, Black Prophecies - Dark Angel, and more. - Metal_Treasure

Seasons In the Abyss. Enough said.
Rust In Peace
Obvious top 1:
"Rust in Peace" - Megadeth (the best metal album ever)
"Cowboys From Hell" - Pantera (their musical shift and incredible album, one of the best in metal)
"Painkiller" - Judas Priest (I prefer "British Steel" and "Screaming for Vengeance", but this one is also incredible)
"Seasons in the Abyss" - Slayer (much, much better than "Reign in Blood", it's between this and their debut in terms of the best Slayer album)
"Empire" - Queensryche ("Operation: Mindcrime" was a lot better, but this is still good and successful album)
Rest of the list should in my opinion look like:
2. 1980 ("Ace of Spades" by Motorhead, "Blizzard of Ozz" by Ozzy Osbourne, "British Steel" by Judas Priest, "Iron Maiden" by Iron Maiden, "Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath, "Lightning to the Nations" by Diamond Head)

2016 is a horrible year, without a doubt.
However, there's been a plethora of classical Thrash Metal bands hitting the Metal scene this year. Heck, Metallica's making a comeback after 8 years. Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, Metal Church and Overkill are producing and have released new material to good chart success and critical reception. Maybe this could be the year where Thrash Metal may finally get its comeback :). - CrimsonShark
We've lost so many celebrities, David Bowie, Prince, Cgristina Grimmie, I can't count the rest.
It's all too horrible.
And we had the worst shooting ever and we've lost one of our greatest astronauts, John Glenn.
I hope 2017 isn't worse like 2001 where we had 9/11, or else we're dead.
Nightfall, Mirror Mirror - Blind Guardian, The Coming Curse, Melancholy - Iced Earth, Voice of the Soul, Flesh and the Power It Holds - Death, Whiskey In the Jar - Metallica, The Pharaoh Sails to Orion - Nightwish, Out of Control, Vain Glory Opera - Edguy - Metal_Treasure
+ Gorguts - Obscura (Obscura, Earthly Love, The Art of Sombre Ecstasy); Nile - Amongst the Catacombs of Nephren-Ka (Smashing the Antiu, Barra Edinazzu) - Metal_Treasure
