Metal: a subgenre of rock?

Adrian_4 So, I've been seeing this question being asked throughout all the internet, not just this site.
And everyone had reasonable arguments as to why metal is or isn't a subgenre of rock.

This is no exception. On this very list, for instance, several people that voted for Rock 'n' Roll also commented that they did it because "metal is a subgenre of rock", or a variation of that statement.
In contrast to that, on e.g. "Greatest Hard Rock Artists" list, some of the people that voted for Black Sabbath and Metallica (among other bands) only did it to comment on how they are "metal, and not rock".
There are some more examples that I can't think of right now, but you get the point.

Now, what I know is that metal draws influence from classical music, in contrast to rock, that is influenced by blues. But there's also the fact that most metal bands use all the typical instruments of rock music, and the sound of it doesn't differ THAT much from rock.

In my opinion, some genres of metal are rock (e.g. traditional heavy metal), while others are, in lack of a better expression, just to abstract to be called so (e.g. death metal).

But I want to hear your opinion.

Is metal a subgenre of rock?

Yes it is. It is basically just a hard rock. - visitor

I didn't realize this was a matter of contention what else would it be? (Sorry I don't know a lot about metal). - Powell
