Paper Mario: Sticker Star Review

LarrytheFairy Come on, this game isn't that bad. In fact, I think it's great.

I don't understand where all the hate for this game comes from, but it seems to me it's because it isn't like the other Paper Mario games. This is very true, but that isn't a bad thing. In case you don't know, Paper Mario is one of two Mario RPG series, the other being Mario and Luigi. The thing is, Sticker Star isn't really an RPG, and if you judge it by most RPG standards then it is a pretty lacking game. It has no leveling up, stats, or party members. You have to collect stickers around the world to use in battles and to solve puzzles instead of having abilities. You can find more powerful stickers in later levels, so even though you don't level up, you get more powerful as you progress.

The RPG elements may be weak, but in its own right, this game is fantastic. It has really clever puzzles often involving tearing off sections of the world and placing them somewhere else. The game is divided into levels, which is disappointing, but the game actually does a great job of making it non linear. You often have to use items you find in a hidden area of one level to solve a puzzle in a completely different world. The puzzles are definitely Sticker Star's strength.

The battle system isn't great, but it isn't bad. Most of the bosses are pretty boring, because you can just spam "thing stickers" (basically stickers you make out of real world objects), but bosses like the final Bowser fight require you to use specific types of Sticker depending in the battle phase. The battle system isn't great, but it CAN be awesome.

9/10. I don't see why this game gets much hate. It has fantastic puzzles and a very non-linear world. The battle system is a weakness, but can be good at times. Highly reccomended game.

Haven't played TTYD unfortunately, I've played the first couple chapters of SPM, it's really good but I still prefer Sticker Star to be honest. - LarrytheFairy (3/25/2017)
