Movie Review: Escape Room
nicolasb5194 OThis is my first review on this site. My first review will be on this film that came out few weeks ago called Escape Room. I was kind of hesitant to see this film since the guy who directed Insidious: The Last Key directed this. Since that was a pretty bad film, I didn’t know how I would feel about this. So I gave it a chance. I went into this film thinking it would be an intense, fun movie that would brighten up the mood for what’s to come in the cinema. So I saw it and... it gives us that, but this film suffers from a large share of problems.This film is about six different people who review a cube through an unknown identity and then are invited to take part in an escape room challenge. If they lose, their lives are claimed. First, let’s talk about the things that I liked in the film. I thought the acting was really great. It shows that the actors were really acting like that they’re frightened. The designs of the escape rooms look really cool. And the film’s biggest strength has got to be the tensionnthat rises with the continuation of the film. Of the six main characters, there were two that stick out and act as very believable and had me rooting for them in particular.
Now, let’s talk about the bad stuff. And there’s a lot of bad in this film. My main problem with this film is that it’s predictable throughout. I already knew what would happen to these characters. I find the first half of the film to be better however simply because of the fact that the film seems to lose its momentum in the second half. The concept also feels like a ripoff of Saw! If you seen Saw and watch this film, you would understand the similarities. The characters are underdeveloped. You don’t care about them when they died in one of the escape rooms. The film is also pretty dumb in a lot of ways. I’m not simply talking the decisions the characters take either. Yes, the characters make a lot of dumb and nonsensical decisions during the second half, but there area with bunch of other decisions that ruin the film for me. I will talk about them briefly without spoiling. The motivation for bringing the characters together was generic and stupid. There is something that happens with the female lead in the last fifteen minutes that makes no sense. Finally, the ending seems to set up a sequel or a whole franchise. The latter also feels last minute and that it was done in one draft considering that I was very confused while watching it.
Overall, this is one of the worst films of 2019 so far. We were already in the new year and we already have one bad film. If you want a mindless thriller that you can watch and have fun with, this may be up your alley. Heck, I would even agree with that statement myself, however, the second half really ruined it for me. This was a pretty bad film.
