The legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild Review

Eclipsmon Let's now review the suggestion of Evan the Nerd: the Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild. This game is really, really popular, with sails that once surpassed the sails of the console it's on, and many considering it the best Zelda game or even of all time. As for me, do I think Breath of the Wild gets too much praised, or is it truly a masterpiece? Let's find out!

Let's start with the story. Believe it or not but, this was the hardest paragraph to write, for reasons I will talk about later. So the story starts with Link waking up after resurecting. You evetually learn that you were asleep for 100 years, and that calamitty Ganon took over Hyrule. You also learn that you lost your memory, but that you are the only hope to save Hyrule. So what do I think about the story overall? It's very good. One thing stories are important for is to give you the motivation to move foward when playing. And this story does an excellent job for that. You are in a world where there is not a lot of lives, because of the domination of Ganon, and there are monsters everywhere. That makes you want to defeat Ganon even more. On top of that, the characters you can meet are pretty good, and I like Zelda's character arc quite a bit. This story is not like most of the Zelda games which is cool for oirginality points. Personally, my favorite story of Zelda is still Majora's Mask, but this is a close second, and I wonder if the reason why I prefer Majora's Mask is actually because it doesn't have the Zelda mythology in it, so yeah.

The graphics are a mixbag in my opinion. Let's start with the negatives. Personally, Breath of the Wild isn't that beautiful. There is nothing jaw breaking in this game really, besides one things that I will talk about later. The textures aren't that impressive, and same for the character models. In fact it's very recurring to have Zelda games, that doesn't look that good for their console when you compare them to other games on the system. The only exceptions I can think about are Wind Waker, and the Zelda remakes. On the other hand, there is something very good about those graphics. You can see from very far away, and this is very impressive, especially, if you compare to Pokemon Sword and Shield. So overall, I think that by itself Breath of the Wild only look okay, but is still impressive.

What about the music? Well, the soundtrack composed by Manaka Kataoka, Yasuaki Iwata, and Hajime Wakai is quite a joy to listen to. In most of the game there is not a lot of music, but otherwise it goes from very relaxing, to very intense. It's overall really well made. It's not the most memorable soundtrack but, it certainly gets the job done.

Now it's finally time to talk about the gameplay. What makes this game so special? Well is an open world game. Now a days, most of the most acclaimed games of all time are open world like that, and I can see why it is so popular. As I said in my Minecraft review (only my second review and I already mention one of my previous reviews...), people play video games to do things that are impossible to do in real life, and open world games gives you tons of possibilities, thanks to their huge playground. However, you might know that I think open world games are a often too big for me, since the bigger space means, that some area will feel empty, unlike a collect-a-thon where all the game is concentrate in a more limited space, making for a game more consistently fun in my opinion. That being said this is only a preference, and I try to be the most objective as possible (even though my own objectivity is subjective). I will say that with how big this game is, and how many areas are fun to explore, this makes a very fun game.

Now let's talk about the progression of Breath of the Wild. Like I said open world games gives you a lot of possibilities, and Breath of the Wild is fun thanks to those possibilities. Most notably in this game, it is possible, to beat Ganon before even doing most of the main objectives, like freeing the champions, finding all the memories, and getting the master sword. However, it will be considerably harder so beware of that. The fact this game gives you that much freedom is simply beautiful.

Believe it or not, but my favorite part of Breath of the Wild isn't the progression, but the combat. The combat in Breath of the Wild is simply amazing. Let's take how the battles works at the basic. You can do multiple attacks, and dodging attacks is very satisfying. that being said there is much more than just that. You can use many weapons including those of the enemy which is awesome. Sure they can break, but it's not annoying. What's also great, is that the game wants you to take ennemies by surprise to get better results in battles. To do that you can sneak to ennemies or shoot some arrows. You can also use your environnment to your advantage. For example, near the beginning of the game, there is a house full of enemies. However, there is an hole in the house where you can see a torch hanging from the ceiling. Shoot an arrow in it, and the torch falls into explosives, and I let you imagine what happens next. This game is amazing, because it gives you so many ways to fight enemies, and when you think something might be possible to do to fight enemies, don't hesitate trying it, because this game has so many possibilities, that it might actually be possible, and I wouldn't be surprise if it happens.

However, this game has a certain flaw. You see I am a completionist. When I play games, I want those games to show me all that they can do. Therefore, trying to 100% those games is something that I am likely to do. So I decided to do the same for Breath of the Wild, and let's just say it was one hell of a ride. When I watched for playthroughs to play those games at 100%, I saw that there was arounnd a thousand videos of 30 minutes videos that showed how to complete the game at 100%. I'm sorry but this is madness. I will say some positives though, the shrines are very fun. They make for great puzzles, and I don't know if the reward is good, but if the shrines themselve are fun there is a very good intrinsic reward to do shrines, and honestly that's all I need. The rest of those sidequests on the other hand, are really not that fun. It was so much long to try to beat this game at 100%, that I stopped playing, and never ended the main game. That's why making the paragraph about the story of Breath of the Wild was hard to do. It's because I didn't even know the full game, before making this review, so I had to watch cutscenes on Youtube. So, at the end of the day, don't do this game at 100%, and if you are a completionist, only do the shrines. At least all of that is optionnal, so saying 100 percenting the game is too hard is actually more a nitpick than anything.

So this is the end of the review. What's my verdict? Despite the bad things I said about the game, especially when it comes to 100 percenting the game this game is still amazing. This game has a good story, graphics that are far from the best, but are still impressive in their own way, great music, and gives you a lot of great possibilities, especially in combat. I didn't know that at my second review I would already give this score to a game, but here it is the very rare 11/10! Note that, 11/10 doesn't mean it's a perfect game. What it does mean, is that not only did they do all that they need to do to be a great game, but they also went even further, adding things that weren't needed to make people like your game, but yet still did those things, and this is awesome. You also have to note, that there are games that I like more than this game, that I would only give a 10/10, but honestly, if I would have finished Breath of the Wild, I think I would like it much more than I do now. And, during this period of Coronavirus, maybe I should consider playing this amazing game, but this time without 100 percenting it.

I don't know what will be the next review, so don't hesitate making suggestions to me for the next review. Trust me, if I played the game I will eventually review it, if you suggest it to me.
