Good question,now let me start with some basic things

heavy metal was originated in very early of 70s,by bands like deep purple,black sabbath,uriah heep etc.however there are only two heavy metal bands who are considered as the first heavy metal band,Led Zeppelin(by american critics) and Black Sabbath(by British critics).But Led Zeppelin is not a heavy metal band,they are a Hard Rock Band.So it's Black Sabbath who is officially the first heavy metal band.BUT the band DEEP PURPLE was already playing progressive rock and Psychedelic rock,and they went harder and harder and finally turned into a Heavy Metal band,so it's Deep Purple who is the first heavy metal band.

Anyway,the Heavy Metal of 70s is now known as Traditional Heavy metal,and in the early 70s most bands only played Heavy Metal music and they called this music also as Metal,But in the late 70s and 80s there sprawled many different metal music like thrash metal,speed metal,progressive metal,and death metal etc.

So,this is the main reason,we call the music Heavy Metal is a first form of Metal music,and all other genres like speed metal,thrash metal,death metal,black metal are called as a whole METAL music.but the heavy metal is a specific music type and sub genre of Metal music which are different from other metal sub-genres.

Fantastic question,and also one of the hardest questions,well I like nothing else matters more than Master of Puppets and songs like hammer to fall,we will rock you,under pressure,spread your wings more than Bohemian Rhapsody.though from my point of view these songs are little bit of overrated (the songs you mentioned),but overrated means songs that get more attention than they deserve,and these two songs deserve the ratings that they get,so its different from everyone's perspective.

It's hard to say.
All of them tried to play metal. But Led Zeppelin failed in it. So I think it's deep purple. I discovered it when I first listened child in time's solo. Led Zeppelin was heavy. But Deep Purple beat Led Zeppelin with solos.

And then, there comes Black Sabbath. Since deep purple started it in their earlier days than Black Sabbath. But those songs were full of "psych rock" and "prog rock" influences.

The problem is all of the heaviest albums that could be considered as metal released in 1970. So I think different bands invented different genres of metal at the same time.

But so far I'm sticking with Deep Purple. But there are other bands to notice. For example Uriah Heep, Lucifer's Friend (again I discovered it this year, from somekindofaguy). this flipped my mind once more. - zxm (12/3/2016)

They are both hard rock and heavy metal. there's a band called "warfaze" which is on the site. and the lead guitarist of "warfaze" came to the band. and he played those solos, metal solos. there are a lot of songs of theirs which are heavy metal/metal. I can give you a list of their metal songs.
