Best Morbid Angel Albums

Morbid Angel is a Tampa, Florida, United States-based Death Metal band assembled in 1984. They, along with Deicide, Death, Possessed, Autopsy, Suffocation, Obituary, Massacre and a handful of others were crucial in the development of the death metal genre and its standards. Their songs are complex in arrangement, owing to the considerable technical skills of both guitarist Trey Azagthoth and drummer Pete Sandoval.

To date, they have 8 Studio albums (all of them are just EPIC! ).

So, I think it will be hard to choose and vote for a Morbid Angel album for you, the voters.

The Top Ten
1 Altars of Madness

One of the best death metal albums of all time. Every second, from the start to the very end, is 100% great. No crappy interludes. It's rare to find an album where every single song is excellent. The speed, the solos, the composition - everything is perfect.

I don't think I'll ever be able to make a top Morbid Angel list... They're all just so good. But if I do, then my top 5 would be:

1. Altars of Madness
2. Covenant
3. Gateways to Annihilation
4. Blessed Are the Sick
5. Domination

Classic. I am a big fan of Morbid Angel, and, sorry, this is the best one. The pioneers of death metal made their best offer on this little piece here!

2 Covenant

There are only a few albums you can classify as perfect, and this is one of them. From beginning to end, there are no weak spots. The songs are well written, the leads are beyond amazing, and the sound of the album is legendary, thanks to Metallica's old producer of great records like Ride, Master, and Justice. A must-have.

I love Altars of Madness and Blessed Are the Sick, but Covenant is the best of all. Flawless, ultra-fast, and brutal. It's even more catchy than the other two, and that's saying something!

3 Blessed Are the Sick

A pure, majestic masterclass in musical beauty and death metal brutality.

COME forth Ancient Ones, Tiamat Kutulu
RISE, greet the cursed with your wrath
My enemies are yours
Twist their minds with your spells
Crush their souls
With your infernal grasp

4 Gateways to Annihilation

This should be number one in my opinion - an absolute masterpiece that takes you into a cold, dark Lovecraftian nightmare. Altars of Madness is great, but there isn't a single death metal album quite like this one. It's so original, with a mix of fast and furious sections alongside slow and crushing moments. The vocals are outstanding. This is Morbid Angel at their peak. If you're going to try any Morbid Angel album, make it this one.

YES! That is exactly how I describe this album. Somehow, impossibly so, it is really fast and really slow at the same time. This was the fourth Morbid Angel album I listened to, and it is so original and amazing - not just great solely because it's original.

5 Domination

The production is huge and matches the band's major status, with near-perfect songwriting and amazing leads from Rutan. Apart from some childish lyrics, this is an absolute masterpiece.

Great album again. Definitely get this if you're a Morbid Angel fan. I like this album almost as much as the three above it.

This was playing in the truck for over a year straight.

6 Formulas Fatal to the Flesh

The riffs are fantastic on this. Heavily underrated album and one of Trey Azagthoth's most creative.

7 Heretic

"Heretic" has the most counterpoint of any Morbid Angel album to date, giving each track an underlying layer of depth previously unseen in the band's entire catalog. "Beneath the Hollow" is one of the best songs Morbid Angel has ever composed, and the counterpoint on "Curse the Flesh" during the chorus adds sonic nuance and sophistication. There are the trademark Morbid Angel otherworldly dynamic moments, like on "God of Our Own Divinity." Every track possesses contrapuntal textures, and I always enjoy discovering hidden secrets within the music. Perhaps a thicker or bassier production style might detract from the intricate sonic fabric woven into the songs. Either way, "Heretic" is highly underrated and misunderstood - one of Morbid Angel's best offerings, dampened by an awkward track listing and obtuse production. The unorthodox production is initially off-putting but later becomes an acquired taste.

8 Abomination of Desolation
9 Kingdoms Disdained

A brutal masterpiece of contemporary death metal. It achieves what so many new generation death metal bands strive for. The songwriting is efficient, the arrangements are both concise and complex, and the meter changes are masterfully handled. The production sounds new and fresh. If you love rhythmic death metal, this album sets the standard.

10 Thy Kingdom Come
The Contenders
11 Illud Divinum Insanus

I don't think it's as bad as people claim. Some metal fans tend to overreact and follow the crowd, just because the album has been severely criticized by a group of critics and metalheads. I'm sure that if the album suddenly received praise for the band's bold approach, those who were previously dismissive would change their tune. Many people comment without actively listening to the album, as their opinions are shaped by relentless negative feedback.
