Top 10 Best Songs of 2015 According to Complex
You probably already expected it. Like the last times when I released a list of what I think are the year's ten best songs, I also took a look at the year-end lists of Rolling Stone, laut.de, and Complex. The three all have a different approach, and even though sometimes individual songs can be found on more than one list, the short texts that go along with the rankings are always entirely different.
What I have to praise, as I always did so far, is the passion with which Complex picks songs. Just reading the introduction alone, where they write an entire paragraph about how they could have just picked the most relevant songs with mathematical precision, and then basically said, "But no, we didn't do that. We put a lot more heart into it," is pure joy.
What I get from Complex is that when they like an artist, they don't just listen to the singles but to all of the albums. They often ignore a number one song and pick an obscure track for their list. They may be very hip hop-centered (although they also pick songs from other genres), but it isn't because the genre is trending right now. It's because they can identify with those songs the most.
Whether I agree with their choices or not, when I read their texts I know exactly why they picked the respective song. That makes the list so enjoyable and not frustrating in the slightest, unlike both Rolling Stone's and laut.de's.
Off their list, there is one song that can also be found on my personal top ten ranking of 2015 (the same as on Rolling Stone's list), and one that I had shortlisted because it simply has the most awesome hip hop beat of the decade (number nine on Complex's list), but that ultimately didn't make it.
