Top 10 Greatest Songs of 2018 According to Laut.de
On December 7, 2018, the German music critic website Laut.de revealed their 30 picks for the best songs of the year.
It is debatable whether it makes sense to create such a list when there are still three weeks left in the year (SPOILER: it doesn't). But let's not waste time wondering about the premise itself and immediately take a look at the list.
Let's mention the most obvious first: none of these songs were hits in Germany. No, not even the hip hop songs that topped the US charts, and not even the German ones. And that's perfectly fine in and of itself. The most popular songs aren't necessarily the greatest ones, but it isn't exactly a quality seal to exclude them. They made it perfectly clear that's what they were going for, as they proudly announced in the opening text, followed by a list of the most streamed songs of the year (including songs from albums that received positive reviews from them), all of which they ignored for the list.
They had done the same in previous years. Some of the best songs were also highly popular ("Rolling in the Deep," "Paradise," "Rise Like a Phoenix"), yet still found no place on their lists.
Nevertheless, most of the songs on the 2018 list aren't half bad. Their number 1 tune, which most of you will be familiar with, really is one of the greatest tracks the year had to offer, and I can actually agree with it ranking so highly.
One more thing I noticed: is it coincidental that the two artists with the word "Phoenix" ranked right after each other?
