Top 10 Best Glee Characters

Glee brought us some of the most unforgettable and diverse characters on TV. From the quirky misfits to the confident divas, Glee had a character for everyone to love, root for, or maybe even hate a little.

Over the course of six seasons, we watched these characters grow, struggle, and, of course, sing their hearts out, often delivering jaw-dropping musical performances and tackling real-life issues along the way.

The Top Ten
  1. Santana Lopez

Santana Lopez is a confident and sharp-tongued cheerleader who later embraces her identity as a lesbian. She is known for her singing talent and complex relationships with other members of the Glee Club.

Going from a background character to a fan favorite speaks to the depth her character was given throughout the 6 seasons. Santana highlighted the intricacies of the human condition and proved that the most flawed of characters still have heart. Naya's portrayal of Santana could not have been done by anyone else. She easily has the best voice, and her one-liners made the show.

Santana and Brittany provided 90% of the comedic relief in Glee and did so flawlessly. Putting the two pretty cheerleaders together changed the opinions of so many people all over the world, and I'll forever stand by that.

Santana's not only the best character on Glee, but definitely one of the best on television, period. She is a complex character who is frighteningly easy to relate to. Not only does Santana amuse with wonderful comedic barbs, but she also stirs great compassion as she struggles to handle her challenges.

Multi-layered, she is simultaneously fierce and vulnerable. Add Naya Rivera's (Santana) amazing vocals, dance, and beauty to make her easily the "true star" of Glee. I hope to see more of her in the future as the show winds down. Maybe a spin-off? Add in an album or two. I need my Santana tunes.

  2. Kurt Hummel

Kurt Hummel is a fashion-forward, openly gay student who faces bullying but finds solace and acceptance in the Glee Club. He is known for his high voice range and strong emotional journey throughout the series.

Something about Kurt that I've always admired is his bravery and pride. He isn't afraid to be himself, and that has spoken to me and a lot of people I know.

His determination to not let the world get to him is inspiring and beautiful. He's always been one of the strongest characters on the show, persevering despite horrendous bullying and showing that he is himself, he is always going to be himself, and that no one can tell him what he can or cannot do or become.

He's been a symbol throughout the show of how being true to yourself is the best way to be, because lies are just that: a lie. And nothing is worth giving up the best person you could ever become just because someone tells you that you shouldn't, can't, or won't.

  3. Blaine Anderson

Blaine Anderson is a charismatic singer and the lead vocalist of the Dalton Academy Warblers before joining McKinley High's Glee Club. He develops a significant relationship with Kurt Hummel, becoming one of the show's prominent LGBTQ+ characters.

He is such a nice person and has an incredible gift. One of the best male voices we have on Glee. He is so cute and loves helping others. And come on, who doesn't love Blaine? He is polite, kind, and has an interesting personality.

Especially in the beginning of season 2, he was so mysterious and charming. Plus, he makes the perfect match with Kurt. I love Blaine even more every time he encourages Kurt when he has his doubts about something, when they laugh and spend time together, and when they kiss.

Blaine is like an angel for Kurt. He is the person that made his life more beautiful. So, Blaine is AWESOME!

I don't know why, but Blaine keeps captivating me. Overall, I notice qualities that should make him less likeable, like overreacting, cheating, and being a control-freak. Yet, they don't. He delivers in a very human way.

Even though Darren Criss is heterosexual, he portrays Blaine as such a loving person. The emotional scenes between him and Kurt made me shed tears on multiple occasions. And that is what I call great acting. He's not perfect, but that's what makes him all the more captivating and endearing.

  4. Rachel Berry

Rachel Berry is an ambitious, highly driven student with dreams of becoming a Broadway star. She is recognized for her powerful voice and determination, often clashing with others due to her intense focus on her goals.

Rachel Barbra Berry is an icon! Yes, she could be obnoxious, arrogant, and selfish. Yes, she did some awful things. But so did almost every single character on this show.

Glee is a comedy (even though it really should've been more of a drama), and the writers often made her do outlandish, crazy things just to cause drama and move the plot along. Her character development was constantly thrown into the trashcan, but we all know continuity was practically non-existent on this show.

So, in real life, would I be friends with her? Probably not. But she was a damn entertaining character to watch, one I always ended up rooting for. Her drive and dedication were inspiring, and she gave us so many amazing songs and iconic lines.

I pretty much only watched the last season for her. And in the end, Rachel Berry really was the face of Glee! Who knows how long the show would've lasted without her.

  5. Brittany Pierce

Brittany Pierce is a quirky and often misunderstood cheerleader known for her eccentric comments and exceptional dance skills. She eventually develops a meaningful relationship with Santana Lopez.

Brittany is just so gorgeous and sweet. The one problem was that Ryan Murphy made her insulting half the time and nice the other half. When Santana says, "You look like one of the bait girls on 'To Catch a Predator!'" Brittany responds with, "Yeah. And I'm more talented than you."

But this is literally the same person who helped Becky believe in herself and didn't blame Rachel and Finn for ruining Nationals because they were a family. Make up your mind, Ryan Murphy! Is she a mean girl, a dumb blonde, or a super talented, friendly dancer we all want her to be?

In my opinion, Brittany is one of the best characters on Glee. She's funny, cute, sweet, caring, and loving. She can dance very well and has an amazing voice. Heather Morris is one of my favorite actresses of all time.

I think she did an amazing job portraying Brittany, and I'm just happy to see her acting talent develop in the show. Brittany is a special person who makes people happy, and that's what is so unique about that character.

  6. Finn Hudson

Finn Hudson is a kind-hearted football player who initially struggles with balancing sports and his passion for singing. As one of the leaders of the Glee Club, he faces various challenges but remains a central figure throughout the series.

As the ultimate Gleek, I strongly believe that Glee was amazing with Cory Monteith in it. Even after his death, we could all feel his presence throughout the rest of the series. The auditorium was named after him!

Without him, many characters wouldn't have joined the Glee Club. Even though Quinn joined with a motive, it was because of Finn, and he even made the boys on his team perform the most embarrassing dance in public. He was a leader and an inspiration.

Not only were the actors and actresses on Glee affected by his death, but fans and Gleeks were affected too. I felt so sorry for Lea because Cory really touched her. Finn, you deserve number 1 on this list, not 7!

  7. Quinn Fabray

Quinn Fabray is introduced as the head cheerleader and a deeply religious student who later faces personal challenges, including a teenage pregnancy. Her character evolves as she seeks redemption and self-acceptance.

She went through an emotional roller coaster. In Season 1 she got pregnant and had to deal with the whole teen pregnancy thing. In Season 2 she had a love triangle between Sam and Finn and ended up breaking up with both of them.

In Season 3, while trying desperately to feel different, she joins the Skanks. Then she has a dramatic accident and can't walk. I could go on forever about all the stuff she has been through.

But despite all that, she was always ready to fight and she never let anything or anyone get in her way. She made some big mistakes and choices I personally don't agree with, but she left the past behind her and is stronger than ever.

  8. Mercedes Jones

Mercedes Jones is a powerhouse vocalist with dreams of becoming a professional singer. She often struggles with being overshadowed but learns to assert her talents and fight for recognition.

Although Mercedes had some of the worst storylines in Glee, like the tot thing (and Rachel getting all the solos instead of Mercedes, like huh?!), Mercedes is kind, helpful, and always has everybody's back no matter what!

In my opinion, Mercedes is the best singer in the glee club. She is a performer and a star, not only a good singer or dancer (well, she isn't a good dancer, but still), she is an ICON!

Mercedes Jones is such an inspiring character. She doesn't mind sharing the spotlight with others. Although she is underrated on Glee, she acknowledges Rachel as one of the best singers she has ever heard. This shows her appreciation for other people.

Mercedes is someone you can relate to, with her awesome voice, personality, and unique vocal range. She is everything I want to be.

  9. Sue Sylvester

Sue Sylvester is the head coach of the cheerleading team and a recurring antagonist to the Glee Club. Known for her biting wit and determination to undermine the club, she occasionally shows a softer side.

She is the only character in Glee who never once disappointed me. Even at times when she failed or lost, she was elegant and never really lost her head. She never resorted to childish drama. And though she was a compulsive liar and a psychopath, she was a mind genius, a vicious leader, and most of all - a winner, a fighter.

When she strikes, she's tall and fiery and doesn't let petty emotions get in her way. She's ruthless. But in the end, she was actually a good person. She reveled in her rage, not because she had "temper issues," but because she converted her anger and controlled it, bending it to her will.

Who doesn't like Sue Sylvester? She is hilarious. My favorite line from her is, "Get the hell out of my office." Jane Lynch, the actress who plays Sue, is one of the best in the business. She constantly reminds everyone of her youth and gives us a laugh every now and then.

  10. Sam Evans

Sam Evans is a kind and talented student who joins the Glee Club after transferring to McKinley High. He becomes known for his singing, guitar-playing, and his struggles with body image and financial issues.

Sam Evans is my all-time favorite Glee character. I love Glee and most of its characters, but Sam stands out as the sweetest and kindest. He may not be the best singer or dancer, but he's a great guy. He might not be the main character, but I can't say anything bad about him.

I especially love Samcedes! Sam Evans is the best!

He was mostly unproblematic and looked out for his friends however he could. Sam pretty much saved Blaine when he got really down (you know why and what season).

His impressions were cute and dorky. HE was cute and dorky.

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Brody Weston

Brody Weston is a charming upperclassman at NYADA who becomes romantically involved with Rachel Berry. His relationship with Rachel eventually becomes strained due to secrets he keeps about his personal life.

  13. ?

    Ken Tanaka

Ken Tanaka is the head football coach at McKinley High, known for his gruff demeanor and his unreciprocated romantic interest in Emma Pillsbury. His character often provides comedic moments, especially in his interactions with the Glee Club.

  14. The Contenders
  15. Marley Rose

Marley Rose is a kind-hearted and shy student with a passion for singing and songwriting. She joins the Glee Club in its later seasons and faces issues of self-esteem and body image.

Marley is nearly the only one who never deliberately did anything to hurt anyone. She was extremely forgiving and so sweet, even when the other party didn't deserve it.

I know she was in Supergirl, but Glee's biggest mistake was not giving her scenes in season 6 and making her more of a central character. I thought I'd put in Kurt (who is still amazing), but honestly, Marley is the most underrated character in Glee, which is what really appealed to me.

Super underrated. Also, a very relatable character. She's just nice, pretty, and insecure. She can be boring from time to time, but can't all the characters? Her singing voice is honestly overrated, but she was, in my opinion, the best 2nd Generation female singer (Kitty was meh). She was the only 2nd Gen character I warmed up to.

  16. Emma Pillsbury

Emma Pillsbury is the school guidance counselor with obsessive-compulsive tendencies. She provides support to students and later develops a romantic relationship with Will Schuester.

Way to go, Emma! You showed that anything is possible when you defeated your illness against all odds. No one should have ever doubted you. You prove that dreams can come true. Sure, you had your ups and downs, but so does everyone. So, I say three cheers for Mrs. Pillsbury!

She's nice and has a really good storyline. Sometimes I think she deserves better than Will, but then they're so nice together.

Such an underestimated character. Her morals were almost perfect throughout the whole show. Caring and loving with Will, the kids, and everyone, even Sue.

  17. Noah Puckerman

Noah "Puck" Puckerman is a football player and self-styled "bad boy" who often finds himself in trouble but shows surprising loyalty to the Glee Club. His character evolves as he faces personal challenges, including fatherhood.

In season one, Puck seems like a stereotypical high school jock, but later on, it's revealed that he has much more to him than that.

In the glee club, Will often seems unsure of how to deal with Puck, and he is frequently underestimated by the other glee clubbers. It seems a bit unfair that throughout McKinley, everyone almost always had someone to help them with their problems (Finn had Mr. Schue, Sam had Finn and Rachel, Quinn had Mercedes, and in the third season, she had Puck), while many of his problems weren't addressed or were just ignored.

Noah is my favorite character by far. At the beginning, he seemed like a real jerk, but later he reveals he's a lot more than that. I think him singing is super sexy. When he sang Keep Holding On for Quinn in Season 6, it actually made me tear up a bit.

After watching that, Puck became boyfriend goals, especially when he beat up Quinn's boyfriend for her. He's such a cutie. And him with Beth was absolutely perfect. He should be number 1.

  18. Artie Abrams

Artie Abrams is a wheelchair-bound student with a passion for directing and performing. He is a key member of the Glee Club and is known for his determination and optimism.

I love Artie. He's sweet, caring, and faces actual problems that teenagers encounter.

He's always polite when others are performing. He's an awesome singer, and I think he deserves a relationship with Kitty or Quinn. He's smart, too.

I love Artie and think he deserves more solos and screen time.

Artie is a very kind man. He endures not only the average teenage problems but also faces the problem of disability with a smile.

He is always polite and is a fantastic singer. I believe he is the best character, but then again, I'm only on season one.

  19. Will Schuester

Will Schuester is a Spanish teacher who becomes the Glee Club director, working hard to bring the club to success. He is a dedicated mentor to the students and helps them navigate personal and social issues.

My favorite star in my favorite show, Glee, is Will Schuester, who is played by Matthew Morrison. He is a Spanish teacher.

He is an amazing teacher and role model. He cheers people up, he is honest, and he is a dream-come-true teacher. Will is also the director of the Glee Club.

Will is cute, adorable, hot, charming, and a good-looking guy. I want to go on the show Glee so I can be close to him, be in Glee Club, and play basketball and football so I can see him. I hope Will can take me to his house. I love Will Schuester.

Sadly, he's so underestimated by many people. Let's not forget that Will is the reason Glee started again, and he's kind of the soul of the club.

Also, he is the hottest teacher ever. And not only that, of course, he's the dream-come-true teacher, to be honest. If we were all taught by such people, there would be no things like violence, war, and misunderstanding in the world. So, yeah, vote for him. Cheers

  20. Tina Cohen-Chang

Tina Cohen-Chang is one of the original Glee Club members who starts off shy and unsure of herself. Over time, she becomes more confident, especially in her singing and leadership abilities.

Tina has an amazing voice, and she experienced significant character development.

She is sometimes portrayed as a joke, but she becomes very confident in herself by the end, and I can relate to her.

She's always kind of in the background, but she should have had more focus because SHE. IS. AMAZING.

Tina is one of the characters with the most development. She started as the awkward goth girl with the stutter, and now she's a true diva that shines on stage.

She even won prom queen and showed everybody in Glee that she has the charisma and drive to be on top.

  21. Mike Chang

Mike Chang is an athletic and talented dancer who initially struggles with his academic confidence. His dance abilities are a standout, and he eventually gains more recognition in the Glee Club.

Mike Chang was the shy guy who barely spoke. Watching him transition from that into a student at Joffrey and dancing at every opportunity is so inspirational. He's an inspiration to dancers, people labeled as nothing more than a brainiac, and shy or quiet individuals who are often overlooked.

    Plus, he's really sweet!

Mike Chang is one of the original Glee club members and, in my opinion, one of the most interesting characters. He barely had a storyline, and when he did, it was always related to Tina. However, he brought something special to the show. He is one of those characters I just can't imagine Glee without.

  22. Burt Hummel

Burt Hummel is Kurt Hummel's supportive father who runs an auto repair shop. He becomes a strong advocate for his son and plays a significant role in Kurt's journey to acceptance.

Burt is just a good person whom I love. He isn't only one of the most humble and kind characters in Glee. He also has great character development!

Although I don't think he's the best character, he definitely gets to stand on the podium!

I wish he was my dad. He was so great and loving to Kurt and wasn't afraid to be stern.

He was also great at being welcoming to Finn and standing up for his son Kurt after being homophobic himself. And we all cried during the "Grilled Cheesus" episode.

Best transition. He learned how to communicate. He opened up completely and became the most supportive, loving father. A perfect depiction of what a dad should be.

  23. Kitty Wilde

Kitty Wilde is introduced as a new member of the Cheerios and later joins the Glee Club. She starts off as manipulative and mean-spirited but gradually becomes more empathetic.

People often compare Kitty Wilde to Quinn, but she's her own person. Quinn's motives were unclear, and you could never guess what she would do next. Kitty, on the other hand, is more immature. She's a typical high school girl who gets jealous and is mean simply because that's what people expect from her.

The only things they have in common are that they were both cheerleaders and blondes.

She has been through hell, overcoming bullying and every obstacle that came her way. Now, she's such a stunning, talented, and remarkable young lady.

She has an amazing soft voice, and I just can't wait to see more about her in the future! She is awesome.

  24. Holly Holliday

Holly Holliday is a substitute teacher who briefly takes over the Glee Club. She is known for her unconventional teaching methods and free-spirited attitude, as well as her impressive musical performances.

Holly is just a boss, and she is the coach that New Directions deserves (I mean, I do hate Will).

I really like Holly, end of the story.

Holly has all these young and fresh ideas that made Glee more interesting... not that it is not the most interesting show ever.

  25. Lauren Zizes

Lauren Zizes is a confident and strong-willed member of the wrestling team who briefly joins the Glee Club. She has a memorable relationship with Puck and stands out for her unapologetic attitude.

Even though I voted for Kurt (because Kurt is, well, Kurt), I love Lauren, and I'm so sad to see that she's quite hated. I find her awesome, so badass, and funny. It's like a breath of fresh air.

The fact that, as some haters said, they don't try to make her attractive and she still gets the "hottie" is just so amazing. The badasses meet, and I'm so sad Puck ended up with Quinn and Lauren left so soon. I just really loved her.

Lauren was really inspiring when she ran for prom queen. She shows you don't have to be supermodel skinny to be cool... well, her and Meghan Trainor.

  26. Sebastian Smythe

Sebastian Smythe is a competitive and cunning member of the Dalton Academy Warblers, often serving as an antagonist to the McKinley High Glee Club. He is known for his rivalry with Blaine Anderson and his ambitious nature.

Maybe he isn't the nicest guy on the show, but he proved to be one of the best villains. He performed exceptionally well, especially in Smooth Criminal.

I wish he would have gotten more screen time, especially with Blaine.

Yeah, he can be kind of a douche, but he is really funny and a great villain with a really great smile, voice, and awesome one-liners.

He is like a mix between Santana, Sue, and Terri.

Best villain. His rivalry with Santana and competition with Kurt were amazing to watch. Not the nicest guy in the least, but by far one of the most interesting.

  27. Coach Shannon Beiste

Coach Shannon Beiste is the football coach at McKinley High, known for her toughness and determination. She undergoes a significant personal journey, including coming out as transgender and becoming a key figure of support for the students.

She seems so nice, and the story behind her is so sad.

  28. Jake Puckerman

Jake Puckerman is the younger half-brother of Noah Puckerman and joins the Glee Club as a talented singer and dancer. He struggles with anger issues and his desire to distinguish himself from his brother.

I liked him a lot in season four, but the writers kind of screwed up his character in season five. I hated how he treated Marley and then expected her to forgive him like nothing happened.

He has a pretty good voice and has been the best male dancer in the Glee Club besides Mike Chang.

He and Marley also had really great storylines.

  29. Ryder Lynn

Ryder Lynn is a new student and talented singer who joins the Glee Club in later seasons. He faces personal struggles, including dyslexia and complicated relationships with other club members.

He's very sweet and he has an amazing voice. I wanted him to sing more because Innocent Man and Your Song were just awesome.

Ryder was a great singer and a total sweetheart! I'm sad that we didn't see very much of him.

He is hot, sings well, and is a sweet guy.
