Top 10 Best Sesame Street Characters

Which Sesame Street character had you hooked before you could even spell your own name? Maybe it was a certain blue fuzzball with a cookie problem. Maybe it was the eight-foot-tall bird with the world's most patient attitude. Or the red guy who somehow became more famous than some presidents. Whoever it was, you probably still remember the songs, the voices, and the weird comfort of seeing them pop up on screen like old friends who never aged a day.

This list is all about figuring out who stands tallest, literally or figuratively, on the street where letters and numbers live. The ones who made you laugh, taught you stuff, or just showed you it's okay to be a little weird. Your favorites might be obvious or totally random. You might go for the classic crowd pleasers or the grumpy green one who lives in a trash can and lowkey spits the realest truth.

Vote for the ones you think truly run Sesame Street. Or at least deserve a shiny spot near the top.

The Top Ten
  1. Cookie Monster

Cookie Monster is a Muppet character from the long-running children's television show Sesame Street. He is famous for his insatiable appetite and iconic phrases like "Me want cookie!" "Me eat cookie!" and "Om nom nom nom." He first appeared on the show in 1969 and continues to be one of its most beloved... read more

I love Cookie Monster! He is my favorite! You can go to my website, sesamestreetlovers.Weebly.com. There, you can see all about the characters on this list, including Cookie Monster, who is the best Sesame Street character I have ever seen.

I have all kinds of Cookie Monster stuff. I have so many shirts, backpacks, a wallet, and hats. I love Cookie Monster, and I hope Sesame Street is always on television because I just love watching it every day when I come home from school. I never want them to stop making Sesame Street or Cookie Monster.

Cookie Monster is THE best, hands down. I was 3 or 4 years old in the very early '70s, when Sesame Street itself was in its infancy. I loved Cookie Monster then, and I love him now at age 51. The simple, clean, good humor of his cookie-eating behavior and his signature "OM, NOM, NOM, NOM" is a timeless classic.

If I ever had children, they would've been introduced to Cookie Monster rapidly.

  2. Elmo

Elmo is a Muppet character on the children's television show Sesame Street. He is a furry red monster with a falsetto voice, who hosts the last full fifteen-minute segment on Sesame Street, "Elmo's World", which is aimed at toddlers. Elmo was originally performed by several puppeteers before Kevin Clash... read more

Hooray for Sesame Street, hooray for Big Bird, and mostly hooray for Elmo. Wait? Elmo? He should be number one. He rocks everything (except for celebrities with Elmo and evil Elmo, shudder). But still, I love Elmo even much better than Cookie Monster. Why is he not number one? He's only about cookies. Elmo has his own world, dummies.

Elmo looks adorable, sounds adorable, and IS adorable. His fluffy, furry red skin makes him the best, too. He is so good that he even has 15 minutes of the show dedicated to him, Elmo's World!

Elmo was my favorite as a little kid, so I vote for him. And why isn't Elmo number one? He arguably became the most iconic character on Sesame Street.

  3. Big Bird

Big Bird is the main protagonist of the children's television show Sesame Street. The character was officially performed by Caroll Spinney from 1969 to 2015, Daniel Seagren in 1969 and 1970, and Matt Vogel since 1998. Big Bird was voiced by Spinney from 1969 to 2018 and by Vogel since 2002.

He and Oscar were the first two characters on Sesame Street. Who can't love an 8 foot 2 in. turkey that's 48 years old? Check out the movie I Am Big Bird.

I feel Elmo's a bit too popular. Can we bring Big Bird higher? He's friendly, yellow, and he IS Sesame Street. He IS.

I met Caroll Spinney at Wizard World, and he signed a picture of himself, Big Bird, and Oscar together. Best. Convention. EVER!

  4. Oscar the Grouch

Oscar the Grouch is a fictional Muppet character on Sesame Street, created by Jim Henson. He is known for living in a trash can and for his cranky, irritable demeanor. Since his debut in 1969, he has become one of the show's most iconic characters.

Oscar is grouchy but educational at the same time. When I used to watch Sesame Street, I would think, "Why is he so mean?" I answered the question myself by saying, "He is mean because he is in a less fortunate situation in some way that we may not know."

I also think he teaches kids that your actions affect everyone and that you should always be aware of this.

I used to love his bedtime stories at the end.

Something about a grouchy green puppet living in a trash can is just wonderful.

  5. Ernie

Ernie is an orange Muppet character on the long-running PBS and HBO children's television show Sesame Street. He is best known as the roommate and best friend of Bert. Ernie is characterized by his playful nature and love for his rubber duckie.

Ernie is a bit like Grover. Always foolish yet so funny at the same time.

He used to be my favorite character! Either him or Elmo!

He's funny, and it's pretty hard to get tired of him.

  6. Count von Count

My daughter's favorite character when she was a little girl. She'd laugh and beg me to imitate him for hours!

The Count captured the hearts of parents and children by being curious, humorous, and enlightening.

He would've been great as Edward Cullen in Twilight.

  7. Bert

I'm more similar to Bert while my brother is more similar to Ernie. It's such a coincidence.

  8. Grover

Grover is so funny! He brings a sense of humor to older kids from a show meant for three-year-olds. Elmo is overrated, Cookie Monster is cool, too, and so are Bert and Ernie, but Grover tops them all.

I love to watch his encounters with Mr. Johnson, especially the "Speedy Pizza" special in the movie "Elmo's Magic Cookbook." (PS: Good movie.) If you haven't heard of Grover and Mr. Johnson, I recommend looking it up. I also always thought it was cool how he is Super Grover and Grover at the same time. Grover tops all others!

I asked a kid in my class what color Grover was, and he asked who Grover is. I told him I was talking about Grover from Sesame Street, and he said he'd never seen the show. That explains his sick and twisted soul.

  9. Kermit the Frog

Kermit the Frog is a Muppet character and the most well-known creation of Jim Henson. Introduced in 1955, Kermit serves as the straight man protagonist in numerous Muppet productions, most notably Sesame Street and The Muppet Show. He has also appeared in multiple movies, specials, and public service... read more

Kermit was one of the biggest characters on the show when I was a kid. So a vote for Kermit it is.

I love Kermit, especially when people make videos with Kermit as a part of ''Kermit's Kitchen.'' I really recommend it if you like comedy and cooking.

My all-time favorite! Who cares that I am 50 years old!

  15. Zoe

Zoe is so sweet, and I love how she seems spunky!

  16. Abby Cadabby

Abby has proven to be a great addition to the Sesame Street gang!

Abby is such a cute and cheery fairy!

  17. Prairie Dawn

I literally forgot about her. She's pretty cool.

  18. Julia

A new addition to Sesame Street and the first character with autism. She's really cute, and her autistic traits are shown in a more positive light, being both sensitive and insightful towards the condition.

One of the cutest characters on Sesame Street and one of the few characters on a children's show to have autism. She should be in the top 5.

  19. Harvey Kneeslapper

  20. Rosita

She is the first bilingual character on Sesame Street!

    I love when she sings Mambo I, I, I!

  21. Guy Smiley

  22. Hoots the Owl

The best saxophone player Sesame Street has ever seen!

  23. Mr. Noodle

One of the best Elmo's World characters!

  24. Little Chrissy

  25. Telly Monster

  26. Slimey the Worm

    A shoutout to Slimey:

You should be number one on the list! You are the best Sesame Street character ever!

  27. Dr. Nobel Price

  28. Roosevelt Franklin

Roosevelt is extremely underrated! People, Roosevelt was one of the main characters in Sesame Street's earliest years, so respect him and place him higher on this list!

  29. Baby Bear
