Moana Movie Review

MegaSoulhero The most recent film that Ron and John directed was Moana! This is a movie that a lot of people really love and some people claim it as a masterpiece! And what did I think of it? It was good I guess.

It was a cute movie, but I wouldn't say it was a great one. Basically, it's about a Polynesian girl named Moana who lives on an island. All she wants to do is go sailing but her father, the chief, tells her it's too dangerous. So he forbids her. But in order to save her family's island, she has to sail across the reef to restore the heart of Te Fiti. Along the way, she meets legendary Demigod, Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson. Let me get to what I like the most about this movie. The animation is amazing! It's really impressive how real the scenery looks! The water animation looks fantastic and the hair animation is so realistic! The animation is top notch! The story, however, isn't that great. I wouldn't say it's bad, but it's very cliché! I mean, come on! Two people of opposite genders hate each other first, but they go on an adventure and start to bond. A lot of Disney movies do that these days! It's not just that specific thing! There are A LOT of similarities to other Disney movies! There's nothing really new that this movie gives us! Moana is pretty much a combination of almost every Disney princess! Even though technically she isn't a princess. She's the chief's daughter. Although, Maui makes a joke saying "If you wear a dress and have an animal sidekick, you're a princess." That was pretty funny.

The characters are pretty good, though! Moana is still a pretty likeable character despite me saying that she is too much like other Disney princesses. She's very tough and adventurous! She doesn't know how to sail but Maui manages to teach her. Auli'i Cravalho did such a great job with voicing her! And that was her first acting role! Dwayne Johnson as Maui was pretty cool and got a few laughs. But it's also Maui's fault that Moana's island even needs to be saved. I don't like Heihei at all! He is an annoying chicken and added nothing to the plot! I barely remember the characters on Moana's island, though. I really like how the movie stays focused on Moana and Maui going on this journey. They make a great team! This movie is also a musical but to it's credit, the songs are great! How Far I'll Go kind of reminds me Go the Distance from Hercules, so that's pretty cool! Dwayne Johnson's song is pretty catchy. But even with good characters, good songs, and good animation, the story is still not very good! It was so predictable! It didn't want to take risks! Both Zootopia and Frozen took risks with their style but this movie didn't particularly do that. Although, it's kind of interesting that the character Moana doesn't have a love interest. Some of the jokes also kind of fell flat. And that joke in the after credits scene was not very subtle. But these problems didn't ruin the movie for me. I just felt like it had so much more potential!

Moana was very disappointing! Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie, but it wasn't as good as everyone says it is. I wanted it to be a lot better but the story was very average. I stilI had a lot of fun with it and I still definitely recommend it! And be sure to stay until after the credits!

Score: 7/10

Yeah, I liked it but it's definitely overrated. The story is a little bland and honestly I found Lilo and Stitch way better (it might be due to nostalgia, no clue, either way both are good films). And Moana does have one cringey song ("Shiny") that made me want to tear my ears out which honestly I never thought that would happen in a Disney film. Also, was I the only person that actually liked Hei Hei? - Anonymousxcxc

Most definitely. IRYO though - TristGamer

I liked the villain though - TwilightKitsune

I didn't realize until earlier this year how much hype Moana gets. While I do like it, it is definitely not one of Disney's best, because when you take out everything but the basic narrative, all you have is a generic Disney princess story. Still the animation is breathtaking and the characters and songs are fun! - Phillip873

It’s good, but overrated.
Besides that, I like it. I do ship Maui and Moana...idc about the age difference.
