The Future of Disney Animation

phillysports Anyone who knows me knows that I am a big fan of Disney animation. Whether that be Pixar or Walt Disney Animation Studios, there's some universal qualities about Disney animated movies that no studio can replicate. So, naturally, I have looked ahead in the future in order to see what the studio has next in store for us. This post is generally a prediction of the quality of the films coming up in the future of Disney Animation.

MOANA (2016) - Walt Disney Animation Studios
Based on what I've seen from the teasers and trailers, this movie looks nothing short of AWESOME. The animation already looks spectacular, and it's great to see Disney throw in a lot of Polynesian culture into their film. All the jokes in the trailer made me chuckle, and the movie looks like just a flat out great adventure comedy. I also heard that Lin-Manuel Miranda (the dude behind Hamilton the musical), is writing the music for the movie, so I'm pretty sure that we're going to get a bunch of future-classic Disney songs in here. I'm pretty sure that Moana is going to be an enormous hit, upwards of $900 million at the box office, so I am nervous that Disney is going to over promote it so much to the point where everyone will eventually hate it. This is the first Disney musical since Frozen, so I hope that the company learned from their past mistakes of shoving the movie in our faces. Still, this movie looks fantastic and I'm pretty sure it'll be revered as a classic in the future. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 92%

CARS 3 (2017) - Pixar
I, like most people, was not a fan of Cars 2. This was my basic reaction when I found out that Pixar was making Cars 3: "WHAT?! Are you kidding me?! They're just making these movies just to sell toys now!" Needless to say, I was not happy about it. However, where Cars 2 seemed dead on arrival, Cars 3 has a slight, SLIGHT chance of being good. I've heard that Lightning is going back to his role as the main protagonist, and that's a sign that Pixar knows that putting Mater as the protagonist wasn't a good idea. I've heard that the main plot of the movie is going to involve Lightning racing across the U.S. with new rivals and new friends. I don't know if this is a good idea or just a rehash of the world tour plot of the second movie. I DO NOT think this movie is going to be good, but I DO think that it'll be better than Cars 2. I just hope that Pixar doesn't make a Cars 4 after this. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 53%

COCO (2017) - Pixar
This is the only upcoming original non-sequel film that Pixar has officially announced so far, and based on the history of the studio, I think this movie will be great. Pixar has always been great in animating real-world environments like something out of a folk tale, so I'm psyched to see how they'll portray the setting and culture of Mexico. The movie is being directed by Lee Unkrich, who directed Toy Story 3 and has worked on pretty much every Pixar film in existence, so the movie is definitely in good creative hands. Pixar rarely makes movies that are less than fantastic, so Coco looks to be on par with some of the great films in the studio's illustrious history. In regards to how it will be in regards to other Pixar movies, I think it will be around Ratatouille, WALL-E, Monsters, Inc. territory. So basically, great, but not exactly Top 5 Pixar worthy. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 91%

WRECK-IT RALPH 2 (2018) - Walt Disney Animation Studios
I LOVED Wreck-It Ralph, so you could imagine that I was ecstatic when a sequel was announced. Walt Disney Animation Studios rarely makes THEATRICAL sequels (only three so far: The Rescuers Down Under, Fantasia 2000, and Winnie the Pooh), but since their Direct-to-Video Sequel era seems to be dying out, the studio seems to be serious now in their efforts to turn their films into legitimate franchises that can be taken seriously. Wreck-It Ralph is a movie that just overflows with originality and fun concepts, and I believe there is more than enough material and ideas to warrant a sequel. I have no idea what the premise of this movie will be, but I'm guessing it will have something to do with the arcade closing and the fear of the video game characters being unplugged for good. Wreck-It Ralph has already earned its ranking among Disney's best animated films, so I'm sure the sequel will not disappoint and follow right in its footsteps. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 82%

THE INCREDIBLES 2 (2018) - Pixar
It's happening, people. It's really happening. After 14 long years of waiting, we'll finally getting an Incredibles sequel. Out of all the movies on this list, I'm excited for this one the most. I absolutely LOVE The Incredibles. I remember watching it a countless number of times as a kid, and I've only respected it more and more as I've grown older. This is a smart and satirical take on a genre that just seems to overrun Hollywood these days. Seriously, do we really need like 20 superhero movies each year? Kind of redundant, I would say. The original Incredibles stands as one of my favorite movies of all time, so I'm very glad that this movie is happening. Brad Bird, the guy who directed and wrote the first film, is returning to do just that the second time around. The Incredibles 2 will most likely be an awesome, action-packed, funny, and emotional thrill-ride where we'll see how Bob and his family have aged over the years, and how new threats and obstacles have emerged along the way. Another good thing about this movie is that I think Pixar will move past it's sequel era after it's released and will go back to releasing original content again. And this looks like the perfect way to end the studio's sequel era off with a bang. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 95%

GIGANTIC (2018) - Walt Disney Animation Studios
I'm excited for this movie based on who's working on it alone. It's being directed by Nathan Greno, who directed Tangled, co-directed by Meg LeFauve, who wrote the screenplay to Inside Out, and the songs are being written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who wrote the songs to Frozen. That's pretty much an all-star team of people who played a large part in some of the greatest Disney animated films ever, so I'm highly confident that Gigantic will turn out great as well. It'll be really interesting to see how these different talented people work together. Also, I think it's cool how Disney's making an adaptation of the timeless fairy tale of Jack and the Beanstalk (to be fair, they already had a Jack in the Beanstalk segment in Fun and Fancy Free). The company has had a great track record of adapting classic folk and fairy tales into films. Snow White, Pinocchio, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, The Princess and the Frog, Tangled, and Frozen already speak for themselves. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 87%

TOY STORY 4 (2019) - Pixar
The fact that this movie is even being made gets on my nerves. Why make another Toy Story film? The franchise is already perfect enough and it ended in the best way imaginable! But, Toy Story 3 made over $1 billion at the box office, so BOOM: fourth installment. As far as I know, there's only been two other theatrical animated movie franchises to make four or more movies: Shrek and Ice Age. Shrek Forever After was meh and Ice Age's sequels just get more embarrassing each year, so that's not exactly the best track record. HOWEVER, this is Toy Story we're talking about. A genius, timeless, 20+ year franchise with truck-loads of wit and heart. I highly doubt that this movie is going to suck. I think it's going to be pretty good actually, but not as good as the first three films in the series. And the fact that I have to refer to Toy Story 1-3 as the "first three" in the series opposed to the "only three" makes me kind of sick to my stomach. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 81%

FROZEN 2 (I'm guessing 2019) - Walt Disney Animation Studios
I'm a big Frozen fan. I love the movie's characters, story, message, and songs with the bottom of my heart, but I can see the reason why so many people have become sick of it. The movie came out three years ago, and it still seems like it's everywhere. You can't go into a store anymore without seeing some kind of Frozen merchandise. As a result, a large amount of people have turned against the movie (legitimate reasons or not), and the fact that a sequel is being made caused a whole collective group of people in the world groan simultaneously. However, I think there is still a lot of more to tell in Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, and the gang's story. The same directors are directing it, all the voice actors are returning, and Kristen and Bobby Lopez are writing all new songs. This movie is going to probably make even more money at the box office than the first one did, and that's saying a lot because the first one was the highest grossing animated film ever. In regards to the whole Give Elsa a Girlfriend thing, I'm totally supportive of it as long as A. It's not the main plot of the movie like how Anna and Kristoff's romance wasn't the main plot of the original and B. Elsa is still Elsa and having a romantic interest doesn't change who she is. Overall, I think this movie will be great and be almost as good as the original was. Predicted Rotten Tomatoes Score: 88%

Disney also needs to bring animation back to Disney Channel. Ever since Gravity Falls ended, I stopped watching it all together. How about this, Disney, you cancel all your live action shows except for Girl Meets World and make new freshly animated series THAT ARE ACTUALLY GOOD. - visitor

Agreed. Gravity Falls left a hole that will be very, VERY hard to fill. Star vs. the Forces of Evil is the only good current Disney cartoon, granted it's on Disney and not Disney CHANNEL. - phillysports

The TECHNOLOGY used in the Cars 2 movie is very amazing! That's the one thing I like in that movie! - Victoryboy
