Why can't an EDM artist hit number one already?

ProPanda So if you didn't know, the EDM genre is currently popular in the mainstream. It is known for buildups, drops, production and a constant melody. However, the US hasn't really caught on. For some reason, an EDM artist can never hit number one as a lead. It's literally only happened three times when Baauer debuted at the penthouse in 2013 with "Harlem Shake", and LMFAO has done it twice with Sexy and I Know It and Party Rock Anthem. Calvin Harris has done it as a featured artist on We Found Love by Rihanna and Afrojack on Give Me Everything by Pitbull. Baauer is close to hip hop and LMFAO are close to pop. What if songs from other genres could be considered EDM just by switching credits. I Gotta Feelin could have been David Guetta ft. The Peas. Sorry and What Do You Mean could have been Skrillex ft. Bieber. Panda could have been Menace ft. Desiigner. Any Macklemore song could have been Ryan Lewis ft. Mack. WFL and GME could have had Harris and Afrojack as leads. But what shocks me the most is that the peak for an EDM song is usually four. Zedd (although as a featured), David Guetta (twice!), Avicii, SeeB(as a remixer), Major Lazer, and DJ Snake(twice!) have all had career peaks of four. Daft Punk have gone as high as 2, while The Chainsmokers have made it to 3. EDM has been fairly popular, with many top ten albums and radio hits. So why can't an EDM artist hit number one already?!

I don't really get this post, but one thing: Macklemore and Ryan Lewis are a tag team, essentially. One artist doesn't feature another. - WonkeyDude98

What annoys me more is how the more repetitive and uncreative artists get so high on the charts, yet the pioneers ahead of their time are lucky to get mainstream attention. Music is only going to be interesting if it goes into the unknown. - PositronWildhawk

True. But the repetitive and uncreative artists have most likely gotten mainstream attention before and made a sound that appeals more to the mainstream than the pioneers' sound (not saying it's a good thing). But there are gems. Albeit not very many. - SwagFlicks

Positron, that was the most butthurt comment I have even seen you posted - Nateawesomeness
