Top 10 Saddest Anime Songs

The title says it all! Which songs in anime are truly the saddest?
The Top Ten
1 Sadness and Sorrow - Naruto

This song fills me with so much emotion. Tears begin to swell in my eyes every time I hear it. I guess it's because this song is relatable to so many of us. It's number 1 in my top ten saddest anime music. Second would be the "Man of the World, Loneliness, Despair, Nightfall" compilation from Naruto Shippuden.

I'm glad this soundtrack got #1 on this list. The first time they used this soundtrack was when Haku's childhood was explained and his death occurred. I think what everyone likes about this soundtrack is the way it was timed during those last episodes of arc 1. It was a great way to start the series.

Memories of every Naruto death come back to you in a flash. You can almost feel everything Naruto went through, being looked down on, hated, all alone. The melody is so beautiful. I want this played at my funeral.

2 Ichiban No Takaramono - Angel Beats!

Throughout the years, though it has lost its previous charm, hearing it makes me reminisce about my school years, back when I still knew the joys of laughter and friendship. This song is the last tie I have with my former friends, as we bonded, young and innocent, over our mutual love of anime and manga, only three years ago. The present is different from the past. Sometimes, late at night, I can still vaguely picture the beautiful face of the girl I once loved, the memory of her becoming my most precious treasure.

This is the saddest anime song I've heard so far. The meaning of the song is evident in the title itself: My Most Precious Treasure. The lyrics state that the memory of everyone laughing is the character's most precious treasure. When you mix this with the storyline, especially in Episode 10 and Episode 13, you'll definitely feel the raw emotions of the characters. "But if I try closing my eyes, I can hear everyone's laughing voices. Somehow, that is my most precious treasure."

3 Elfen Lied - Lilium

This anime had me crying for a whole week. The song is really beautiful and suits the main character so much. This anime's opening song is one of the best anime openings I have ever heard.

This song is so beautiful and sad. In fact, I'm listening to it right now as I type this. The lyrics are great. This song is definitely one of my favorite anime openings.

One hell of a life-changing anime for me. Makes me embrace my sorrow as strength now. Absolutely touching song. Rivals "Unravel" in my heart.

4 Give Me Wings - Evangelion 2.0

I like it a lot.

5 Soundscape to Ardor - Bleach

This was the saddest song I have ever heard. I cry every time I hear this, and it makes me feel really torn apart. Completely the saddest OST I have ever heard, and I really like it.

It feels just like when you're having a Morning Remembrance.

This is an amazing song! Should be in the top 5! Perfect for the saddest moments in Bleach.

6 Aozora - Air

I watched Air, and I'm super sad when Mizusu died in her mother's arms (the mother who adopted her and had been taking care of her for over 10 years). And the song makes it even more depressing! Gao *sobs* Gao! *cries dramatically*

This song is beautiful. It played at Misuzu's death. It's really touching.

Can't help but cry whenever I hear this song.

7 Sis Puella Magica! - Puella Magi Madoka Magica

It has no translation, which is part of the reason. I love how it's mysterious with a tinge of sadness. Kinda reminds me of Homura. Try visualizing Homura with this song.

This anime is very underrated, but the soundtrack is absolutely beautiful, and this is my favorite song.

This anime was one of the best I've come across so far, and this song is part of the reason. It's so beautiful.

8 Afterglow - Kanon
9 Fairy Tail Main Theme (Slow Version) - Fairy Tail

When I heard the slow version of this song, I suddenly felt sadness. It is an absolute contrast with the normal one. At first, I thought Fairy Tail was just an anime that was meant to be funny, but as the story progressed, it was not like what I thought.

I love the anime and manga, and trust me when I say that this is one of those shows that can get you laughing your ass off one second, and crying your eyes out the next.

My first and favorite song is Fairy Tail. Its main theme inspires me the most. My friends and I always sing 1D songs, but my otaku heart never forgets about anime. When it comes to anime, the first thing that comes to mind is Fairy Tail, and we go back to discussing the main theme.

10 The Guts to Never Give Up - Naruto Shippuden

Whenever I listen to this, it makes me so sad and reminds me of Itachi's death by Sasuke. Aww, I'm sad now. Thanks for that, Naruto! I am now upset.

The Contenders
11 Kaishou - Gankutusou: The Count of Monte Cristo

It's great, you know.

12 Shoujo No Ori - Kanon
13 Ihojin No Yaiba - Sword of the Stranger
14 Romei - Fullmetal Alchemist

It's quite a beautiful song. Amazing song for the sad parts of Fullmetal Alchemist.

15 Fuyu No Hanabi - Kanon
16 Merche Funebre - Hellsing Ultimate

Only a man can kill a monster.

17 Puellla In Somnio - Puella Magi Madoka Magica

I think Inevitabilis, the piano version of this song, is sadder, but whatever, this one's really good too.

18 Tori No Uta - Air

I listen to this song, and every time I just feel peacefulness and sadness.

19 Where the Lights Are - Fist of the North Star: Raoh Gaiden
20 Requiem for the Lost Ones - Bleach
21 Princess Melodies / Star Locket Song - Sailor Moon

I really love this song. It has no words, but you can feel the emotion flowing from it. You can make up a story for it, or you can use the real one. The real story is this:

Princess Usagi gave her beloved prince, Mamoru, a locket. The locket had been passed down by moon royalty for generations. That day, Mamoru left to fight in a war. The moon kingdom was almost wiped out. In hopes of one day restoring her kingdom, Queen Serenity used the last of her power to send her royal court, daughter, and the prince to Earth. Now, whenever Usagi hears this locket, she is overwhelmed with sorrow, and she cannot remember why. Not even of the lover she almost lost to evil.

Love this song. It goes perfectly with the scene in Sailor Moon it's played in. They couldn't pick a better song.

22 Secret Base - Anohana

It just reminds me of the ending of Anohana, especially with its beautiful lyrics, marvelous tune, and other synonyms for an awesome tone. Listening to it will bring you the feels deep in your heart.

I didn't even watch the anime, but the song is really emotional and brings tears to my eyes when listening to it while knowing the lyrics.

The best song for me. It's written very beautifully. The lyrics of the song can make a person cry even by reading the lyrics.

23 Dear You - Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni

Every time I listen to this, I think of the deep story of When They Cry, the deaths, the feels, and the pain. If you don't cry at some point in this song, you are heartless...

Oh, my God, this song got me bawling like a baby for days. It has that kind of sad feel to it, even when you haven't watched Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. And the story behind it...

Best song ever, tons of feels, very emotional, and describes beautiful feelings.

24 Soldiers Honour - Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood
25 Brothers - Fullmetal Alchemist

What? This should be in the top 5, if not in the first slot. I love this song. It's impossible not to get teary-eyed when you listen to it.

It is so sad and yet so happy at the same time. It reminds you of the Elric brothers' past and yet gives you hope for their next victory.

This song is highly emotional and perfectly captures the Elric brothers' tragic past. This song should be number one!
