Best 13 Reasons Why Characters

Best characters from the show based on the 2007 novel by Jay Asher.
The Top Ten
1 Jeff Atkins

It's so easy to hate a lot of characters in this show, but Jeff is the only one that is an exception. He supported Clay and helped him throughout the show. He is such a simple character, but holds a lot of positivity.

Jeff was the nicest character who inspired Clay to get out of his comfort zone and get a life. He was supportive, true, and honestly hot.

He influenced Clay as his mentor and friend. The most positive, kind and caring character on the show.

Jeff was very caring and just wanted the best for Clay. I think everybody wants a friend like him.

2 Justin Foley

His character development is great. Poor guy was born into a hopeless situation causing him to rely on the wrong person and associate himself with the wrong people. Justin made a lot of bad decisions but he's really sorry for them so I hope he finds a way recover and get his life back on track. I just want a happy ending for him.

I think Justin is so kind hearted and he has troubles at home so everything he has done is not his fault. I learned to love him in season two. What happened to him in season 4.. I can't I cried so hard..

Justin made some really bad decisions but in season two I think he truly wants to be a better person. He has great character development. I hope in season three he becomes clean though!

A person who was in the middle of being a friend (to Bryce) or a lover (to Jessica). Like everyone of us who gets caught between two difficult decisions every damn time.

3 Tony

R.O.D Tony has been one of my favorite characters from the jump. At first I was shady of him but as he becomes more than just the tape messenger and more of trustworthy friend you start to love him. Tony maybe the most trustworthy character to ever touch the screen you can tell him anything and he won't speak about to anyone. although sometimes it doesn't work out, he is still the most love able character in the show

He's the guy who is really a true friend - to Hannah and Clay. He proved himself as not just a "fair-weather friend", but stuck with Clay despite everything Clay did to him and blamed him for. Level-headed, funny, protective, cool, (dang good looking), and kind, Tony's #1.

Tony is the most likable character on the show. He's a good person and friend, kind, compassionate, smart, hard-working and mature for his age.

Just the guy we all needed in the show he kept me alive and was such a caring friend no matter what, even though he had his own hardships.

4 Alex Standall

He's a brave guy who'd stand up to bullies like Monty and Bryce. He's a little disabled but that doesn't prevent from putting up a good fight. I wish that the story revolved around him a little more. A loyal and trustworthy friend who'd give a shoulder to lean on as well as good advice.

He's a realist and such a sweetie, he's one of Hannah's only friends that actually cared for her, he realized what he did right away and felt horrible, and not to mention he's sooo good looking.

He's very realistic and he sees things as they are. He's smart and even though he doesn't talk that much, his words says a lot.

Alex is the only person on the tapes who really regrets what he did. He's
smart, kind and lonely, and clearly the best character on the show.

5 Zach Dempsey

Considering some of the other characters on the show I didn't feel like Zach was completely awful after watching season 1, many did worse things and he kept the note which gave him some depth even though the first season didn't give him too much of a plot line. Season 2 is where he really starts developing which made me like his character even more. He's great and I really enjoyed episode 7 (S2).

Liked him throughout the whole series. Really a great character with a kind heart.
Hope they dwell a bit deeper with his character in season 2.

The kind-hearted jock. Lonely and misunderstood, the character you didn't expect to like.

I have to admit, I didn't like Zach until I saw episode 7. Now he's in my top 5!

6 Clay Jensen

Like Hannah said, he isn't every other guy. Yes he's irrationalish at the middle of the series but when you see him with Hannah or before the suicide he's just the most likable person. When every other person put their hands on their girlfriends butts he still put his hands on her back that's respect right there and I think we all should appreciate that. There's more reasons why;) but I think he should be higher on this list.

He was a caring, kind, and likable protagonist. His only problem was taking so LONG to hear the tapes. Otherwise his socially awkward, and emotional character was a standout in the series along with characters like Tony, Alex and Jeff.

The main character. Sweet, kind and good, but also irrational. We all know that he might have just listened those tapes at once and help people who needed that (Tyler).

This guy shows true emotion to losing Hannah... but he does so when losing Jeff; because both collide? How is this Clay's fault?

7 Jessica Davis

Jessica is definitely my favorite. Especially after season 2 and 3. She is such a strong character. She's been through a lot and came out as a badass, funny and unbelievably strong warrior. She truly is a survivor and she deserved so much better. I hope she'll get happiness in season 4

She suffered so much and made a couple mistakes which is only human

I don't like her

8 Hannah Baker

She was intelligent. Witty. Lovely. The only person who was nice to everyone apart from Jeff. She made some mistakes but by the time she could correct them. She was gone. She was young and had no right guidance. I don't blame her for anything that had happened to her. Without therapy and medication you can't avert suicide and the poor girl was deprived of it. People who say that she was an awful person because she killed herself don't know anything about depression and how it affects people. Hannah is forever favorite.

Hannah is my favourite character by far! She was not selfish, "a dick" anything like that. I know many people say that it was awful that she made these tapes and that they could cause that 13 persons will now kill themselves as well but I don't think so. The point of the tapes is not to make them suicidal she just doesn't want them to get away with what they did and in my opinion that's totally understandable. I mean they practically killed someone. Hannah is for me just really relateable and gorgeous. And she's extremly sassy! She deserved better!

Very glad she's so low down, she wasn't a very good character at all and I found her very hypocritical. she isn't a good portrayal of a suicidal teen. not to mention, even before EVERYTHING bad happened, she was still rude to clay, so she was never a nice person anyway.

Incidentally, I'm not victim blaming at all. hannah didn't deserve any of this and she didn't deserve anything bad to happen to her at all, and none of it was her fault. I'm saying she wasn't a nice person before all of that, either.

9 Sheri Holland

Wish you had stuck around for much longer, I really liked your character and I honestly think you were my favorite. After you were gone I didn't really like anyone else.

She is a nice person. Even that she did stupid things she went to the clubhouse a help Clay a lot.

Good person, scared of the consequences of her deeds. Tries to fix things up.

She 's a nice girl

10 Charlie St. George
The Contenders
11 Ryan Shaver

He admits to his shortcoming, as displayed when he simply shrugged in acceptance when he was described by Alex as an arrogant snob. He, compared to a lot of the other characters didn't do all that much wrong. Not to meantion his sarcastic and witty remarks are a much needed breath of fresh air from all the intense fumes the other characters of the show brings.

I'm surprised by how low he is. Here's real list
5. Alex Standall
4. Jeff Atkins
3. Hannah Baker
2. Scott Reed
1. Ryan Shaver

Ryan is very funny, but sometimes doesn't express enough of his emotion.

He is the ONE thing that prevents me from crying 24/7 of watching.

12 Olivia Baker

Next to Sheri and her Husband, the only characters I liked and didn't want to punch in the face every time they made a dumb decision o simply said something annoying as hell.

Hannah's mom. Wants the justice and truth. Struggles after losing her only child and shows what parents feel.

13 Cyrus
14 Mr. Porter
15 Officer Ted
16 Bryce Walker

Bryce has been my favourite character since season one. I believe Justin Prentice is the best actor on the show, and the detail and emotion put into his character is amazing. I love watching him, despite the things Bryce has done.

Bryce by far is one of my favorite characters and I feel like people just automatically hate him because he was a rapist. Now now I know that is bad but you have to admit that his character was portrayed greatly.

Of course the character is not likeable what so ever. But he really IS one of the most interesting characters and the way he is portrayed is just brilliant and confusing at the same time.

I love his actor, but I hate this character. He takes 'horny ass teenager' to another level with all those sexual assaults he committed on those girls D:<

17 Deputy Bill Standall
18 Sheriff Diaz
19 Kevin Porter

Actually not a bad guy to be honest, he is caring as he has a family for his own. I really like him, as he cares for a lot of children.

20 Caleb
21 Montgomery de la Cruz

He is my favorite character he was the most interesting and I couldn't stop smiling every time he came on screen besides the whole tyler thing. I thought he was funny, he was loyal, and fearless. If his friends needed him he was there just like that.

Super nice and sweet, helped Alex when he was having a bad day how. So underrated.

Even though he was on Bryce's side, I felt so bad for him in season 3. He was one of my favourite characters

22 Scott Reed

Nice guy, realised that. Bryce was not the right person to be friends with.

He's cute especially when he stops Clay from getting beat up again.

23 Tyler Down

He was just doing what he does with pictures. Also, he may have a death list and may shoot some people. Lastly, he sent the picture of Hannah and Courtney around because when Tyler asked Hannah if she would like to hang out, Hannah laughed. So Hannah was rude to Tyler

another character who had great development. Tyler went from your weird stalker to a character who just wanted to be free and loved. what happened to him in season 2 was truly sad and listening to him tell Clay and Jessica what happened was one of the saddest moments in the show along with justin's death. I never thought Tyler would end up being such an important character in the show but he plays his role best way you possibly could

I Like Tyler, he is not my favorite, that is Alex, but he sort of reminds me in that age. (I never went that extream, still things that happened to him didn't happen to me) I was an artistički girl, and shy and it was hard to expres my feelings and thoughts. Also being a kid that everybody left behind turned him in to that. He is not a creep, he is just sad and alone boy who is everybodys bunching bag.

I cannot help myself, but I find him cute, even though his character is perceived as a bad parson. There's a way I understand why he's done all the things

24 Matt Jensen

Underrated. He is a good father and helped supported his son good. Also he gave Clay privacy when he needed it unlike her mother.

The future is him

25 May Dempsey

This girl is so amazing I can't even express my love for her! She is breath taking and such a talented young soul! I think you would love her too if you met her she is wonderful

The actress who plays her is so talented!

She is so pretty! She's my inspiration

I hope she's in more in season 2.. didn't see enough of her to make a descision
