Cartoon Crapisodes Rant: Episode 1 - A Pal for Gary

Someone needs to do a rant post on A Pal for Gary, and apparently, that has not happened yet. So it looks like it's time for me to finally live up to my username. Welcome, happy people of TheTopTens. This is ModernSpongeBobSucks here, and today, I'm finally going to make my username worth it by doing a rant post in perhaps my most hated episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. I mean, after seeing this episode, it's not hard to see how much the Post-Movie era of SpongeBob SquarePants sucked. Not to mention this aired in Season 7, which is considered to be one of the worst seasons of SpongeBob SquarePants. Okay, enough chit-chat, let's just get to what happened in this episode. I'll just put what happened in my own words as much as I can based on what I read on the SpongeBob wiki.

So A Pal for Gary starts off with SpongeBob feeding his pet snail Gary. However, he accidentally drops the snail food and mayhem occurs. With said mayhem over, SpongeBob leaves to go to work. Gary then tries to go with SpongeBob to work, but since Mr. Krabs does not allow pets at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob has no choice but to leave Gary at home. This does not bother Gary, as he is seen flipping the TV on, using his leash as a lasso to grab a cowboy hat in a cupboard, and is now sitting back and enjoying some cowboy show or movie. So the episode looks good so far, right? Nothing bad happened in the start of the episode. Let's continue.

Meanwhile, back at the Krusty Krab, a customer enters the restaurant with his pet worm Jan. As pets are not allowed at the Krusty Krab, SpongeBob tells the customer pets aren't allowed. Due to this, the customer is just about to leave when Mr. Krabs decides to make an exception so that the customer can buy Krabby Patties, saying the man is a responsible pet owner. SpongeBob hears what Mr. Krabs says and feels guilty about leaving Gary alone at home. He then proceeds to call Gary, who apparently misses the call as he is too busy watching TV. SpongeBob thinks that Gary is too lonely and sad to answer the phone. Then, a message comes up on the phone made by SpongeBob and Gary about them having fun. This only makes SpongeBob even more guilty. He then leaves a message for Gary saying that he knows he is lonely and that he will be home soon. Back at home, it is clearly shown Gary is having a good time and is in no way lonely or sad at all.

Now SpongeBob is seen leaving the Krusty Krab and is trying to make sure he doesn't run into Mr. Krabs so he doesn't risk having to do more work and having to stay late. This fails when Mr. Krabs spots him and is seen covered in tar and holding a shovel. Mr. Krabs asks SpongeBob to help him renovate the parking lot by fixing it with tarring. SpongeBob declines, and surprisingly, Mr. Krabs understands (sheesh, you'd wish he was more nice like this in the Post-Movie era episodes) and tells him to arrive at work 5 hours earlier than usual to finish renovating the parking lot (okay... well, at least he's not forcing him to stay late. I'll give Mr. Krabs some credit). SpongeBob then sees a stand of nudibranchs and tries to purchase one. The old lady who owns the stand appears and tries to warn him that nudibranchs are more dangerous than they look and are especially dangerous when around other animals. Despite these warnings, SpongeBob happens to have his IQ drop as low as Patrick's when he pays no heed to the warning and runs off without paying for the nudibranch. The old lady then comments to herself that people never listen. Oh, what could possibly go wrong?

So SpongeBob then arrives home to show Gary his new pet who will be Gary's friend, which he named "Puffy Fluffy", seeing as the state it is currently in at this point in time is "cute". SpongeBob then goes to the kitchen to cook some enchiladas. Back in the living room, Gary is chewing his toy in front of Puffy Fluffy. Then, just as the commercials from Nickelodeon showed, Puffy Fluffy becomes "not-so Puffy Fluffy" when he then goes berserk and chews Gary's toy apart. Fortunately, just as SpongeBob is coming back, Puffy Fluffy reverts back to being cute and does not eat Gary. SpongeBob gives both of them food in Gary's bowl for both of them to share and eat. Gary proceeds to eat his dinner when Puffy Fluffy goes berserk again and eats all of Gary's food, prompting Gary to hide from him. SpongeBob scolds at Gary for hiding from Puffy Fluffy and then Gary jumps onto SpongeBob while SpongeBob sees Puffy Fluffy pretending to look innocent.

As punishment, SpongeBob wants Gary to not sleep with him tonight. It looks like Gary might be able to sleep alone in peace... when SpongeBob then says that Puffy Fluffy will sleep with Gary as well (face palm with a power level over 9000). When SpongeBob tries to put Gary in bed with Puffy Fluffy, Gary hisses at the nudibranch. Just as SpongeBob is about to go to sleep, Gary bursts into his bedroom, still scared of that accursed Puffy Fluffy. SpongeBob just thinks that Gary thinks his friend is being mean and takes him back downstairs and tells him to let him sleep as he goes back in his bedroom to sleep.

Later in the night, Gary wakes up and sees Puffy Fluffy... which actually turns out to be Puffy Fluffy's shed skin. Gary then goes to investigate the kitchen to see a huge monstrous eel raiding the refrigerator. Of course, the huge monstrous eel is revealed to be Puffy Fluffy, who then assaults Gary and relentlessly attacks him as Gary desperately tries to stay alive. Even as all the loud chaos is ensuing, SpongeBob does not even wake up through all of this.

The next morning, SpongeBob does wake up and sees that his whole house is destroyed. After exploring his ruptured library, SpongeBob believes Gary did all of this because he's jealous of Puffy Fluffy. SpongeBob then goes downstairs and bursts through the door where he sees Gary is about to be eaten by Puffy Fluffy. It seems Gary's pet owner has come to the rescue, when out of the blue, the unexpected happens. Oh, here we go...

SpongeBob then says, "GARY!!!!!! You put Fluffy down right now! Bad boy, Gary!"

Okay... I'm gonna save all the rage I have for this episode until near the end of this post. Anyways, SpongeBob says this as he still believes Gary is responsible for all the destruction and that he is still being mean to Puffy Fluffy, even as the poor snail is about to be eaten by Puffy Fluffy. SpongeBob continues to lecture Gary even as Puffy Fluffy is beginning to latch his tongues onto SpongeBob himself to consume him. Luckily, Gary uses his leash to whip Puffy Fluffy and save SpongeBob and lasso Puffy Fluffy's tongues together so that Puffy Fluffy can no longer eat them. Puffy Fluffy then flees the house as SpongeBob, still not realizing Puffy Fluffy was a monster this whole time, tries to call him back. Then he proceeds to reprimand Gary for chasing Puffy Fluffy away even though he just saved him. Finally, at the end of the episode, SpongeBob brings Gary to work so that Gary won't be lonely anymore and Mr. Krabs gladly gives Gary a spatula to help work with SpongeBob. The end.

*Takes a deep breath* Now do you see why I chose my username?! Oh God, I don't know which is worse, this or One Coarse Meal, but even if I consider One Coarse Meal to be worse due to Plankton being psychologically tortured and nearly driven to suicide, A Pal for Gary was still such a crappy SpongeBob episode! I'll admit, Mr. Krabs gets some mercy from me since he wasn't as much of a prick as he was in other bad SpongeBob episodes such as One Coarse Meal and The Cent of Money, but as for SpongeBob... I want to shred him to pieces until he can no longer breathe! Okay, maybe that was a little cruel, but seriously, this guy ruined my childhood of SpongeBob SquarePants due to this episode. First off, I'd like to rant on how much of a retard and a jerk SpongeDumb RetardPants was. I mean, if he was Pre-Movie SpongeBob, he would have normally listened to the old lady's warning, or at the very least, PAY FOR THE DANG PET! Also, his obliviousness to Puffy Fluffy's evil was completely uncalled for! And I bet every one of you wanted to punch a hole in your television set when he said that sinful quote! Like, how dumb could he be?! I bet even someone stupid like Patrick could see what was happening to Gary! Why couldn't this episode have been something like The Great Snail Race, where SpongeBob ACTUALLY realizes his transgressions and shows his sorrow for Gary? Second, I'd like to rage about how much torture Gary was put through. Every single time that innocent snail is harassed and nearly slaughtered by Puffy Fluffy, SpongeBob believes that Gary is the bad guy. How could someone go from being a pet owner who just wanted what's best for his precious pet snail to a deranged animal abuser who neglects his own snail being eaten by a monster right in front of his own eyes?! Lastly, I'd like to talk about how this episode could've been SO MUCH BETTER! The episode started off okay to be honest. Nothing bad happened and there was nothing hurting Squidward or anyone else besides poor Gary(of course since it's an episode focusing on Gary, it's a relief he wasn't in this episode). And as Gary is being tormented throughout the episode, the episode had the potential to be executed properly, had SpongeBob rightfully reprimand Puffy Fluffy and rescue Gary from the monster. But nope! Zeus Cervas, Casey Alexander, and Richard Pursel (well, mostly Zeus Cervas and Casey Alexander, since they also do the storyboard for the show) just had to screw up this episode!

So in all brutal honesty, here is my final score for this episode:

0.5 out of 10.0 stars

Until then, peace!

Good rant, I would be happy if you'd write Puffy Fluffy's name in a Death Note. - Skullkid755

MY GOD This is good! Are you just doing Modern Spongebob episodes or are you going to do differnt stuff? Either way, I don't mind your rant was very entertaining. Hard to believe no toptenner hasn't tackled this piece of turd. - KingFab

I'll do rants on other bad episodes from other cartoons as well. - visitor

Wow! That was a pretty awesome post! I completely felt the same way about Puffy Fluffy, I felt like jumping in the T.V. and wacking it over with a frying pan. And not only that, Spongebob's dumbness irritates me the most! Suddenly, how did his brain cells drop to the same level as the writers who wrote the episode? - TwilightKitsune

Surprised no one else ranted on this mess of an episode yet. Yeah, it's a horrible and cruel mess. I know everyone says this is the worst episode, but I think One Coarse Meal is worse. But this is a very close second. Screw that scene with Spongebob yelling at Gary. - DCfnaf

SPONGEBOB! YOU PUT ZEUS CERVAS AND CASEY ALEXANDER DOWN RIGHT NOW! - DCfnaf

Nice review.
