Top 10 Best Bands of All Time

Top ten bands of all time. OK, it can be anything as long as it's a group of people and not a solo singer.

The Top Ten
  1. The Beatles

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool in 1960. The group comprised John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They are regarded as the most influential band of all time and were integral to the development of the 1960s counterculture and the recognition of popular... read more

This band is simply the greatest of all time! Although they weren't the most talented group ever, they maximized the talent they did have to create something beautiful. John and Paul are one of, if not the best, songwriting duos of all time. They contrasted each other greatly, but that didn't stop them from making fantastic collaborations.

They were both excellent as solo artists, but never reached the heights they achieved as a group. Also, they were the most successful band to transcend the genre of music they started off with. They went from being a great "rock band" to an amazing band, period. Lastly, people of all ages enjoy their music, young and old. This makes them even more lovable as they appeal to a much wider audience.

  2. Queen

Queen is an English rock band formed in London in 1970. The original lineup was Freddie Mercury (lead vocals, piano), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and John Deacon (bass guitar). Before Queen, May and Taylor had played together in a band named Smile. Freddie Mercury, a fan... read more

All of the bands on this list are amazing, but I think Queen is a little better. All the band members were so different, but they all went together well. Queen always has music to offer for every one of your moods, and they never disappoint. I can't think of one song of theirs that was even just a little bit bad.

Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor, Brian May, and John Deacon felt so connected with the audience. I've never been to one of their concerts, and I wasn't even alive when they performed. But even when I watch videos of their concerts, it feels as if I'm there. I haven't watched Bohemian Rhapsody, and I'm still in love with Queen. This just goes to show that people nowadays don't only love Queen because of the movies. Again, all the bands on this list are amazing and have so much to offer, but in my opinion, Queen has just a bit more.

  3. Led Zeppelin

Led Zeppelin was an English hard rock band formed in London in 1968 as the New Yardbirds. The group consisted of Robert Plant (vocals), Jimmy Page (guitar), John Paul Jones (bass, keyboard), and John Bonham (drums). The band was largely the brainchild of Jimmy Page, who even financed their first tour... read more

The template and gold standard for hard rock and heavy metal started here. Unlike so many that followed, Led Zeppelin exhibited musical excellence in all areas, e.g., songwriting, vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass, and, of course, drums, that allows their music to be timeless.

I'm voting for Zeppelin over the two bands above them, Queen and The Beatles, based on the fact that they proved themselves to be incredibly capable both in the studio and, more importantly, live. This is unlike The Beatles, who were mainly a studio band. Each member was equally important to the sound of the band, unlike Queen, who had most of the attention focused on Freddie Mercury.

Zeppelin was so good because of the incredible interplay between John Bonham and John Paul Jones (just look at Dazed and Confused live), the soaring vocals of Robert Plant, and the otherworldly guitar skills of Jimmy Page. Page excelled as both a rhythm player and a great 'feel' lead player, as well as a crazy shredder. But if one of those sections were removed, the whole band would have fallen apart, as they did after Bonham's death. It is for these reasons that I vote Led Zeppelin as the greatest band ever.

  4. Pink Floyd

Pink Floyd are an English progressive rock band formed in 1965 in London, England. They gained international acclaim with their innovative, conceptual music blending progressive rock and psychedelia. The classic lineup included Syd Barrett (vocals and guitar), David Gilmour (vocals and guitar), Nick... read more

This is, without a doubt, the best band in my opinion. It seems like they actually take more time to make amazing music for their fans. Their albums are all unique, and all the songs within the albums are unique as well. There is no other band like Pink Floyd.

I'm confused why Queen is above Pink Floyd. While Queen is amazing, with masterpiece songs that are iconic, I don't see them being above Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, or The Beatles. Heck, even Black Sabbath is above them in my opinion. I agree that The Beatles are number one, but Pink Floyd definitely deserves number two. The only band that's close is Led Zeppelin. Otherwise, Pink Floyd absolutely trashes other bands.

  5. The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones are an English rock band formed in London in 1962. The first settled line-up consisted of Brian Jones (guitar, harmonica), Ian Stewart (piano), Mick Jagger (lead vocals, harmonica), Keith Richards (guitar), Bill Wyman (bass), and Charlie Watts (drums).... read more

In the Beatles vs. Stones debate, while the Beatles' influence is undeniable, I find much of their music sounds aged (Sgt. Pepper, anyone?), while Paint It Black, Honky Tonk Women, Tumbling Dice, and Beast of Burden still sound current.

Better than the Beatles, but with less mainstream pop. Smarter and more real than Led Zeppelin. I'll always love them more than Metallica, AC/DC, and Metallica (most mainstream metal is unlistenable or just bad). Now I have to give them the vote. They are rock by definition: like soul music sped up, or like blues and jazz but with a more modernized fast rage. I'll always love the truest rock band ever made.

  6. Metallica

Metallica is an American heavy and thrash metal band formed in 1981. The original lineup included James Hetfield (vocals and rhythm guitar), Dave Mustaine (lead guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), and Ron McGovney (bass). They first gained mainstream fame with their 1991 self-titled album (The Black Album... read more

Metallica is the best band ever. Just listen to their discography. Even their weakest albums, like St. Anger or Reload, are great to me. They are a big inspiration and got me into heavy metal music. When I first heard Master of Puppets, I was blown away by their sound.

They may not be the fastest, heaviest, or most complex band, but their songs are so well-structured that their albums are very memorable and iconic, especially their first five. To me, Ride the Lightning and Justice are their best and are among the greatest metal records of all time. Amazing band.

They do rockin' solos, and it makes them feel mad. Nothing Else Matters is just the best ever, and Enter Sandman is really awesome too.

  7. Nirvana

Nirvana was an American grunge band formed in Aberdeen, Washington, in 1987. The band consisted of Kurt Cobain (vocals, guitar), Krist Novoselic (bass), and Dave Grohl (drums), who joined in 1990. Nirvana disbanded following Cobain's death by suicide in 1994.... read more

They are so cool, even though they only existed for a few years. Nevermind was just so huge, and Smells Like Teen Spirit is the best ever.

Even the cover has a penis on it.

You could say that The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are true figures in rock, but Nirvana not only showed people the good in this rebellion of music, but it also showed heart, realism, and passion.

Yes, Queen and Zeppelin produced powerful and loud music, but Nirvana was one of the first bands to deal with personal problems like sadness and depression. It's not for everyone, but everyone should at least know and respect this band.

  8. AC/DC

AC/DC is an Australian hard rock band founded in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Bon Scott was the lead singer until his death in 1980 from alcohol poisoning. He was succeeded by Brian Johnson.

The band is known for its blues-influenced rock sound and enduring hits such as Highway... read more

They managed to climb back to the number-one band after their lead singer died. It's the 2000s, and people still listen to them and use their songs in commercials. AC/DC is the hard rock counterpart to The Beatles.

In my opinion, the ranking is: 1. The Beatles, 2. AC/DC, 3. Queen/Led Zeppelin, 4. The Rolling Stones, 5. Pink Floyd.

Let's be real: which bands will people continue to listen to, and how many iconic songs have they made? Having a spot at number nine is a joke. Are you telling me that the number-one hard rock band isn't higher? Come on, guys, are you for real voting Green Day above AC/DC?

AC/DC is by far the best! Do you wanna know why? Well, they were already a good band, but then they started cracking with the High Voltage album and T.N.T..

Then they became humongously famous with Highway to Hell. Their amazing singer Bon Scott died from drinking too much, but then Brian Johnson came along and made the Back in Black album. He absolutely crushed it. It became the second-best-selling album of all time.

After that, they made The Razors Edge, Black Ice, and a bunch of other great albums that don't even need to be mentioned. They're the only band to recover from such a huge loss and become legendary. They're still making albums after 40 bloody years.

Wait a sec, I gotta escort Angus Young across the road. Cya!

  9. Green Day

Green Day are an American pop punk and punk rock band formed in East Bay, California, in 1987. The core members are Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass), and Tré Cool (drums), with Jason White often performing live on guitar. They blend punk rock, pop punk, and alternative rock, drawing... read more

Green Day should be in the top ten. They have songs in many different genres, such as punk rock, pop punk, alternative rock, power pop, garage rock, acoustic, ska, and even screamo. Tre Cool is probably one of the best drummers on Earth, and Mike Dirnt is likely one of the best bassists ever. Billie Joe's lyrics were good at first, but they just keep getting better and better. His vocals are also improving over time.

Some of his guitar solos, especially from the early albums, are absolutely insane. They have sold over 75 million albums worldwide, making them one of the best-selling artists of all time. 'Dookie' is certified as diamond in the USA, and it is the best-selling punk album and also the 57th best-selling album of all time. They have stood the test of time, as they have been together for 30 years.

They are also one of the most influential bands ever, inspiring many other artists such as Blink-182, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Lady Gaga, Busted, McFly, Steve Rushton, Zara Larsson, and The 1975. They truly are one of the biggest and best bands in history.

  10. Guns N' Roses

Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band from Los Angeles formed in 1985. The classic lineup, signed to Geffen Records in 1986, consisted of vocalist Axl Rose, lead guitarist Slash, rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin, bassist Duff McKagan, and drummer Steven Adler. In addition to hard rock, they are also... read more

How is it possible for Tokio Hotel to be in second place? For God's sake, Guns N' Roses are without a doubt the best band ever! Everyone knows Sweet Child O' Mine and November Rain, not to mention Welcome to the Jungle. Every time I hear Slash's solos, I go to heaven.

Guns N' Roses are hard to explain. They give you a sense of what was and what is to come. Although they are no longer together, they will forever continue to enrich people's lives.

Come on, guys. Axl Rose can sing in five octaves. Name another singer with that talent. Also, they are still performing and still sound great.

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Needtobreathe

Needtobreathe is an American rock band from Seneca, South Carolina, stylized as NEEDTOBREATHE. The band blends rock, folk, and Christian influences and has released several albums since forming in 1998. Their music includes albums like Rivers in the Wasteland and Into the Mystery, and they have been... read more

I vote based on overall listenability for all listeners. I believe Needtobreathe has so many songs that are great and easy to listen to.

They have a great mash-up of different genres while remaining true to their original sound.

  15. Rush

Rush is a Canadian progressive rock band that was formed in 1968. The band's most iconic lineup consisted of guitarist Alex Lifeson, bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee, and drummer Neil Peart, who joined in 1974. Following Peart's death from brain cancer on January 7, 2020, Lee and Lifeson announced in October... read more

This band is not as big as the other ones, but the keyboards and the bass are just good, and the guitars are awesome.

The drums are the best. It's fantastic, and everyone loves that keyboard boo sound.

Okay, every fan of any kind of rock music (metal and alternative included) should have every rock band ahead of One Direction.

Easily the most influential prog band, Neil Peart is insane, Geddy Lee is insane, and Alex Lifeson is extremely underrated and incredibly talented. None of these other bands, aside from Led Zeppelin, can even comprehend and capture the skill and heart that goes into each of their songs. They are one of the very few bands to keep the same lineup for over 40 years.

  16. Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden are an English heavy metal band formed in Leyton, East London, in 1975 by bassist and primary songwriter Steve Harris. Their most critically acclaimed period is widely considered to be from 1983 to 1989, during which they released landmark albums like Piece of Mind, Powerslave, Somewhere... read more

This is the band that got me into metal. By far, it's the best metal band out there. You'll want to listen to this! The lyrics are great.

Steve Harris and his galloping bass-playing style are fantastic, and he's a good captain for Team Maiden. Bruce Dickinson excels in vocals. Adrian Smith is known for his melodic guitar-playing style, and Dave Murray's solos are exceptional. Janick Gers delivers good heavy guitar work and is great live, dancing and kicking around. Nicko McBrain is also a superb drummer.

In other words, it's very difficult to find a band that has been making music for the past 45 years and can match Maiden's caliber. Up the Irons!

Iron Maiden is not only the greatest metal band of all time but also the greatest band, period! No other group has released so many good albums, has so many amazing songs, and is so incredible live.

If you've never experienced Maiden, do yourself a favor and listen to their incredible catalogue of music. You will not be disappointed! Up the Irons!

  17. Linkin Park

Linkin Park is an American alternative rock band formed in Agoura Hills, California, in 1996. The current members include Mike Shinoda (vocals, keyboards, rhythm guitar), Brad Delson (guitar), Dave "Phoenix" Farrell (bass), Joe Hahn (DJ), Emily Armstrong (vocals), and Colin Brittain (drums). Linkin Park... read more

Linkin Park's sound and lyrics are very powerful. They reflect the genuineness of not only their own experiences but also their audiences'. The combined talent of men in different genres has created one of the most beautiful diversities in music that I have ever witnessed. I believe they should easily be in the top 3.

Linkin Park is THE rock band leading the digital age. They are the only rock band today to be in the top 20 of "artists with the most Facebook followers" and are the biggest rock band on YouTube.

Love them or hate them, Linkin Park is still going strong and is leaving behind a huge legacy. Only time will tell, but this band has major potential to be remembered as one of the greatest.

  18. The Who

The Who is an English rock band formed in London, England, in 1964. The most recognizable lineup consisted of Roger Daltrey (lead vocals), Pete Townshend (guitar), John Entwistle (bass guitar), and Keith Moon (drums). They are best known for their live performances and hit songs "Baba O'Riley," "My Generation... read more

How the heck is Coldplay above The Who? Name five Coldplay songs now. Now name five Who songs. I can: Baba O'Riley, My Generation, Behind Blue Eyes, Pinball Wizard, Who Are You. And that isn't even getting into their other stuff. Coldplay had Livin' la Vida Loca and Paradise. That's it.

Baba O'Riley, My Generation, I Can See for Miles, Pinball Wizard - these songs are all legendary rock songs and are made by one of the best bands in the world: The Who. They even inspired Nick Mason, the drummer of Pink Floyd, to start learning drums. That's how good they are.

  19. Aerosmith

Aerosmith is an American rock band formed in Boston in 1970. The group consists of Steven Tyler (vocals), Joe Perry (guitar), Tom Hamilton (bass), Joey Kramer (drums), and Brad Whitford (guitar).

Their style, rooted in blues-based hard rock, also incorporates elements of pop rock, heavy metal... read more

Aerosmith needs to be higher on the list. They are the "Bad Boys from Boston," and they rule! They have so many great albums and hits. They are a rock legend. Definitely one of the best and most influential bands in the world! Aerosmith forever!

For 50 years, this band has reinvented itself through music. It's truly amazing that they've lasted this long together and are still continuing to tour.

One of the greatest rock bands ever. They're talented, have good songs, and put on great live performances.

  20. The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys are an American pop rock band formed in Hawthorne, California, in 1961. The original lineup included brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love, and their friend Al Jardine. They are widely recognized for their vocal harmonies and innovative studio work, especially... read more

Why, why, why are they so underrated? They are not even too well known nowadays. Their music was just as perfect as any other band.

I think Guns N' Roses gets more praise than this fantastic band, but Guns N' Roses only had one amazing album and a couple of great songs. The Beach Boys at least had a hit or three on every album. Even their filler songs are great. There's Pet Sounds, Today!, Summer Days and Summer Nights, All Summer Long, Surfin' U.S.A., true rock albums. I am proud to be a Beach Boys fan. Just to know their story and their music makes me such a genius in music. They would be second or third for me.

How these guys aren't in the top 5 blows my mind. They are the reason the Beatles music got even better and it took all 4 Beatles to match the genius of Brian Wilson. Not to mention that so many hits were done in such a short time until Brian had his breakdown because people weren't ready for his genius.

Pet Sounds is the number 2 best album ever. In my opinion it's number 1. Just imagine if Brian made more albums.

  21. Red Hot Chili Peppers

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are an American funk-rock and alternative rock band founded in 1983 in Los Angeles. The current core lineup includes Anthony Kiedis, Michael "Flea" Balzary, Chad Smith, and Joshua Klinghoffer, although John Frusciante remains the most acclaimed guitarist associated with the... read more

My favorite band ever. Flea is an amazing bassist, Anthony is a great singer, Josh and John are great guitarists, and Chad is a pretty good drummer. How is this below One Direction?

Basically the only good band that hasn't broken up and is still good to this day.

My #1. Grew up listening to them non-stop. Funky, catchy, great riffs and basslines. The best.

  22. Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath were a heavy metal band formed in Birmingham, England, in 1968 by guitarist and songwriter Tony Iommi, singer John "Ozzy" Osbourne, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. Their self-titled debut album received mixed reviews, but they quickly gained a strong following... read more

Black Sabbath is one of the most influential bands in rock history and one of the bands that inspired many of the bands we have today. And the original singer, Ozzy Osbourne, is not called the "Prince of Darkness" or the "Godfather of Heavy Metal" for nothing. They should be much higher. They rock and they are the godfathers of metal! Long live Black Sabbath!

Damn, a band that brings you back to the 70s as if you are in Birmingham with them, performing witchcraft. They are real hard hitters that leave you wanting more. Ozzy's vocals, Iomi's guitar, Butler's bass, and Bill's drums are all components that make up the iconic and explosive yet beautiful sound of Sabbath.

  23. Radiohead

Radiohead are an English rock band from Abingdon, Oxfordshire, formed in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood, Colin Greenwood, Phil Selway, and Ed O'Brien.

Known for their experimentation and sonic evolution, they rose to international prominence with OK Computer and continued... read more

22? How is this so far down? Radiohead isn't for this world. The human species doesn't deserve Radiohead's music. It's too good for us. Radiohead conveys emotions you had no idea existed, does things you had no idea could be done, and can make anything and everything work with their genius talent.

Also, look at how well the band members have aged! In A Moon Shaped Pool, you can't even tell that the members of the band are almost 50 years old. They haven't lost any skill or talent over the years, and if anything, they've learned. If I had to pick my Desert Island Disc, it would no doubt be a Radiohead album. Even Pablo Honey has songs like Blow Out that are better and more unique than pretty much anything musicians are doing today. Radiohead is definitely one of the most unique bands in the world, and they're easily the best at it.

  24. Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi is a hard rock and pop rock band formed in 1983. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist Jon Bon Jovi, guitarist Richie Sambora (who left in 2013), bassist Alec John Such (who left in 1994), keyboardist David Bryan, and drummer Tico Torres.... read more

What! Some of these bands above this one aren't even that good. Rush only had Tom Sawyer, and Iron Maiden only had The Trooper. This makes no sense. This band should at least be in the top 10. By the way, Nirvana is so overrated.

One of the best rock bands of the 80s-90s era. Their earlier albums sound so fresh even today.

I love their music. They are one of the few bands from the '80s that remained successful in the '90s and '00s.

  25. U2

U2 are an Irish rock band from Dublin. Formed in 1976, the group consists of Bono, the Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr. U2's early sound was rooted in post-punk and gradually evolved to incorporate elements of alternative rock, electronic, and pop music. Known for their anthemic sound and use... read more

U2 consistently has the highest-grossing and largest sold-out arena world tours every time they put out an album. Their Zooropa tour in the 90s was massive and was the third largest behind The Rolling Stones, just based on gross receipts. To say that they are not in the top 5 biggest bands of all time (yes, this includes the 80s and 90s) is just ridiculous.

As is the case with all truly great bands, U2 has been different but nevertheless brilliant in all phases of its existence. Its popularity is both trans-temporal and trans-cultural. It seems obvious by now that some of the band's best songs will be relevant and enjoyed for many generations to come.

  26. Dream Theater

Dream Theater is an American progressive metal band from Boston, Massachusetts. The band was formed in 1985 under the name "Majesty," later changing it to Dream Theater. The original lineup consisted of John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass), and Mike Portnoy (drums).... read more

If you like Rush, you should give them a listen. They have a similar vibe but, at the same time, feel really original and amazing!

I have to say, I'm surprised they made it to the top 40. However, they deserve to be in the top 5.

Top 5! Easily! All 16 albums are amazing.

  27. Imagine Dragons

Imagine Dragons is an American pop rock band from Provo, Utah, now based in Las Vegas, Nevada. The band's lineup includes lead vocalist Dan Reynolds, guitarist Wayne Sermon, bassist Ben McKee, and touring drummer Andrew Tolman.... read more

I love Imagine Dragons. They've been my favorite band for over a year. Their lyrics are relatively deep, and the music is catchy. However, I don't think they deserve to be on this list, not even if they had kept the same sound and meaningful lyrics of their first two albums.

They are my favorite band. I love all of their songs, especially from the Smoke and Mirrors album. They have such deep and emotional songs. The only bands that come close to them (among modern bands) are Fall Out Boy and probably Twenty One Pilots.

One of my favorite bands. I'm pretty disconnected from my family and depressed because my dad died, but I deny it when my mom asks me and never get help. Imagine Dragons helps me so much, and along with Twenty One Pilots, they actually bring me closer to my family and relatives, and we bond because of it.

  28. ABBA

ABBA were a Swedish pop group formed in Stockholm in 1972. The group consists of Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad.

ABBA became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, particularly during the 1970s and early 1980s.

ABBA is my favourite music group! I listen to their songs every day and never get bored. Bjorn and Benny composing and writing amazing songs with Agnetha and Frida singing is just the best! Although they split up, their music is timeless and never forgotten. I will always love ABBA and will forever!

It would be the best to travel back in time and go to one of their concerts, or even better, get autographs and meet them in person! Indeed, they are one of the greatest bands ever and should be higher on this list!

First off, ABBA is definitely the best band ever. Not only is there harmony with Agnetha and Frida on vocals and Benny and Bjorn on instruments, but their music is catchy. Every one of their songs is strung together, and musically, they are one of the best bands. They have an amazing way of making songs with sad meanings sound very upbeat. Statistically, they are one of the best, for they've sold over 300 million units.

  29. Coldplay

Coldplay is a British rock band formed in 1996. The group includes Chris Martin (lead vocals, piano), Jonny Buckland (lead guitar), Guy Berryman (bass), and Will Champion (drums, backing vocals). Their manager, Phil Harvey, is often referred to as the unofficial fifth member.... read more

Coldplay should at least be in the top five. The creative, beautiful melodies that have calming qualities are now, in this darn decade, unique to Coldplay. I remember listening to Yellow as a little girl, remembering the tune and coming back to remember it just before end-of-year exams. So calming and beautiful. The first time I heard Viva la Vida, the boring car trip suddenly wasn't so boring. And Paradise. I was literally in paradise when this song started playing. There are many, many more songs of theirs that I love, but these ones made my childhood so worth remembering.

Amsterdam, Magic, Swallowed in the Sea, Life in Technicolour II, Violet Hill, Fix You, Amazing Day, Paradise, Trouble, Hypnotized, The Hardest Part, Atlas, Twisted Logic, Everything's Not Lost, Another's Arms, Ink, Midnight, See You Soon, Prospekt's March, Square One, Talk, Always in My Head, Spies, All I Can Think About Is You, In My Place, Up and Up, A Head Full of Dreams, The Scientist, Things I Don't Understand.

These are all incredibly well thought out songs with so much effort and charisma in them. Notice how I didn't include Viva la Vida or Hymn for the Weekend. One song by them that I think is incredibly underrated is Twisted Logic. It makes you think so much and it is so clever.

Some other bands I would point out if you like Coldplay are Bastille, Kodaline, Keane, Snow Patrol, Arcade Fire, U2, and Blossoms.
