Top 10 Saddest Character Deaths in Popular Books
I cried through most of these. It often feels like it's the youngest in the group who dies, or one of the most important characters.
-
Newt - The Death Cure
Why him? Like, out of all of the main characters, beyond the trio, he was the one who had suffered the most. And then he finally had a chance to be free and happy with his two best friends, and then he died.
In the movies, it's heartbreaking because you see his personality change, but in my opinion it's sadder in the movies. Rather than him turning angry and more hostile, you see him just sad and depressed, a huge contrast to the character he was in the first two movies. The same goes for the book plot. And then you see him slowly weakening. And when he finally does turn, there are several moments where he regains sanity.
But his friends mean the world to him. Notice how in the books Newt was always the most affected by character deaths, besides Chuck, but he's right behind Thomas. And in the movies, you can see him fighting the Flare all up until they rescue Minho. Once he is rescued, Newt doesn't care about dying. He rescued his friend, and that's all that mattered to him. The Flare spread through him quickly after that.

Will Herondale - Clockwork Princess
I felt sad all day when he died. And to make matters worse, he died four days after my stinking birthday. At least he didn't die on it. I wouldn't be able to live with myself.
I couldn't even read the rest of the chapter. I just skimmed through it. Happy Will Herondale Remembrance Day, everyone! But what does one do on it? And how can I possibly be happy when the dreaded day comes? I don't know. I'm sad now, so bye.
I burst my tear glands when he died!
But I know even after his death, Tessa and Jem will still remember him, which gives me hope and slightly immobilizes the pain, but it still hurts.
