Top 10 Most Brutal Battles of World War I

In this ANZAC special, I will be listing the most brutal battles ever in WWI, also known as "The War to End All Wars."

  1. Battle of Tannenberg

    The Battle of Tannenberg was fought between Russia and Germany in August 1914, early in World War I. It resulted in a decisive victory for the German forces and was a major blow to the Russian Army. The battle took place in East Prussia, and the Germans were able to use their superior tactics and technology to defeat the Russians.

  2. Battle of Gallipoli

    The Battle of Gallipoli took place on the Gallipoli Peninsula from April 1915 to January 1916 as an Allied attempt to secure a sea route to Russia. The campaign involved large-scale amphibious landings by British, French, Australian, and New Zealand forces against entrenched Ottoman defenders. It ended in an Allied withdrawal after months of stagnation and significant losses on both sides.

    In New Zealand, this is the first battle everyone thinks of when you mention World War I.

  3. Battle of Arras

    The Battle of Arras was fought between the British and German forces in April 1917 during World War I. The battle took place in northern France and was part of the larger Allied offensive known as the Nivelle Offensive. The British were able to make some gains early in the battle but were ultimately unable to break through the German lines. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides.

    The First Battle of the Marne was fought in September 1914 between the German and Allied forces during World War I. The battle took place near Paris, France, and was a major turning point in the war. The Allies were able to stop the German advance and push them back, effectively ending the German plan for a quick victory in the West. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides.

    The Serbian Campaign was a series of battles fought between the Central Powers and Serbia during World War I. The campaign took place in the Balkans and was marked by brutal fighting and heavy casualties. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Serbs were able to hold out against the Central Powers for several months before finally being defeated. The campaign ended with the occupation of Serbia by the Central Powers.

    The Battle of Verdun was fought between the German and French forces in 1916 during World War I. The British launched a massive assault on the German lines, but the attack was met with heavy resistance and resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. The battle lasted for several months and ended in a stalemate, with neither side able to make significant gains. The battle is remembered for its high death toll and the use of new technologies like tanks and poison gas.

  10. Gorlice-Tarnów Offensive

    The Gorlice Tarnów Offensive was launched by German and Austro Hungarian forces in May 1915 on the Eastern Front. The operation aimed to break Russian defensive lines in Galicia and rapidly pushed Russian forces eastward after a concentrated artillery assault. Its success resulted in a major shift in control of territory and forced Russia into a prolonged retreat.

    The Christmas Battles occurred in late 1916 and early 1917 between German and Russian forces near Riga. Fighting centered on attempts by Russian units to break fortified German positions during harsh winter conditions.
