Top 10 Saddest Moments in Comedy Movies

While comedy movies are great for a few chuckles, some contain moments that can really get the waterworks flowing. Here are some examples.
The Top Ten
Lawrence kills Carin and himself - Patch Adams

Starring the late Robin Williams, Patch Adams follows a med student who decides to go against the grain of what's taught at the Medical College of Virginia and focuses on the use of laughter to treat people. Eventually, a fellow colleague, Carin, warms up to him and decides to adopt his way of treatment.

However, a one-on-one session between her and Lawrence ends with both of them dead. With the simple words, "I taught her the medicine that killed her," Patch realizes his fault and tries to commit suicide once again. However, after seeing a butterfly, he is reminded of why he joined the college in the first place and resumes his pursuit.

Marge and the kids leave Homer - The Simpsons Movie

Let's face the facts: Homer is not the best family man. He puts his own personal desires ahead of the needs of his wife and kids, and he strangles Bart with even the slightest provocation.

However, in The Simpsons' theatrical debut, Homer's neglectfulness and ignorance finally catch up with him. After dumping pig feces in Lake Springfield and severely polluting it, a dome is placed over the town, and it's revealed that Homer was responsible. After escaping to Alaska via a sinkhole, they find out that Springfield is in terrible danger, and Marge proposes to save it. But Homer, feeling betrayed by the town, decides to stay put.

Sometime after Marge and the kids leave, Homer finds that Marge has taped a farewell message over their wedding ceremony, forcing him to come to grips with his selfishness. It's one heck of a turning point and shows how Matt Groening can still turn on the waterworks when there's a need to.

Mr. Wilson's tirade and guilt trip - Dennis the Menace

Even though Dennis Mitchell causes chaos and mayhem wherever he goes, it's not intentional. He tries to do what's right and is as curious as any 5-year-old, but it usually ends in disaster, especially for his elderly neighbor, George Wilson.

When Dennis' parents are forced to go on a business trip, they leave him in the care of the Wilsons, much to George's chagrin. During a dinner party for George's garden club, Switchblade Sam robs the house during the blooming of a rare plant. When Dennis tries to warn George about the theft, it distracts the group long enough for the plant to quickly bloom and die.

Angry at this, George chastises Dennis so harshly that the boy runs away. After replaying the moment in his mind, George is overcome with guilt and gets in his car to search for Dennis. Even though Dennis is found and Switchblade Sam is arrested, it's definitely an emotional moment.

Camp closure - Ernest Goes to Camp

The film that made Jim Varney a star, Ernest Goes to Camp was a major laugh riot and is considered the best film in the Ernest P. Worrell series. However, it does have its sad moments.

After Ernest falls for Sherman Krader's act and gets the chief to sign the lease, thinking it's an environmental petition, Mr. Tipton announces that the camp has to close. In order to rectify the situation, Ernest goes to the construction camp and picks a fight with the foreman, only to suffer a brutal and humiliating defeat.

After getting his wounds tended to at the nurse's office, Ernest bursts into tears and starts singing Gee, I'm Glad It's Raining. As if on cue, it actually starts to rain just as he leaves the cabin. Thankfully, the second-chance boys rekindle his fighting spirit, and they are able to hold off the miners long enough for Miss St. Cloud to arrive with a restraining order against Krader.

Del's true situation - Planes, Trains and Automobiles

In this road trip comedy, Neal Page (Steve Martin) and Del Griffith (John Candy) are two unlikely travel companions who try to get home to New York in time for Thanksgiving. After various mishaps along the way, the two start to bond with each other and wish each other the best.

However, the tearjerker moment comes at the end of the movie when Del reveals he has no home to go to and that his wife has been dead for eight years. Neal then decides to invite him to his family's dinner, ending the film on a heartwarming note.

The hearing - Mrs. Doubtfire

In this comedy starring the late Robin Williams, Daniel Hillard plays a newly divorced father who struggles to prove he has what it takes to care for his kids. When his ex-wife places an ad for a nanny, he disguises himself as the titular Mrs. Doubtfire.

Things go well until the unmasking at a dinner. Despite his convincing plea, the judge grants full custody of the children to his ex-wife and further restricts his visitation rights. While things work out to some degree in the end, it is an emotional moment.

Vada and Thomas J. soon start to develop a relationship with each other and share all sorts of experiences. But as things start to go well, Thomas J. decides to throw a rock at a grounded beehive and is stung to death due to his allergy to bee stings. Naturally, Vada does not take this well.

Gerry's letter - Heavyweights

When Gerald Garner comes to Camp Hope, he thinks it's going to be the time of his life until an assembly reveals that the Bushkins filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy and that Tony Perkis is the new owner and operator.

The camp transforms from a playground into a boot camp practically overnight. As Gerry writes a letter to his grandmother, we see various clips of how Tony is willing to push the boys to their breaking point for his own agenda. He replaces fun activities with strenuous workouts, makes them eat healthy yet unappetizing food, and even forces them to partake in a dance with a girls' camp.

Another sad moment is how Gerry's parents won't listen to anything he says because, well, some adults don't listen to kids just because they're kids.

Max tells Goofy, "Leave me alone and get your own life!" - An Extremely Goofy Movie

While parenting can be a difficult endeavor, it can be a rewarding one when done right. But there comes a time when a parent has to let their children leave the nest and spread their wings.

When Max moves out and heads for college, Goofy is fired from his job at a toy factory and learns that he needs a college degree to get hired. He then attends the same college Max is going to. After Goofy joins the Gamma Mu Mu fraternity and beats Max at skateboarding, Max finally snaps at his own father. This devastates Goofy to the point where he fails a midterm exam and misses a date with the librarian.

The two were able to reconcile in the end, but this was a very hard time for Goofy.

A painful reminder - Man of the House

In the mid-1990s, Jonathan Taylor Thomas was just as popular as Tim Allen, and this movie, where he co-stars with Chevy Chase, is one of his best.

After his father leaves, Benjamin Archer and his mother, Sandy, begin a new chapter in their lives until she starts dating Jack Sturges. As Ben and Jack start bonding, Jack runs into car trouble and is unable to attend a rafting trip. As the leader waves goodbye from his vehicle, it brings back painful memories for Ben. The scene mimics the same way his real father left him when he was only five years old and shows that the reason Ben was keeping his distance was that he didn't want to suffer another broken heart.
