The Fellowship fragments - The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
Let me picture the scene. Boromir, wanting to deliver the One Ring to Gondor, attacks Frodo, causing Frodo to distrust the Fellowship. Aragorn catches up with Frodo and, along with Gimli and Legolas, fends off a horde of Uruk-hai to give Frodo time to flee and head to Mordor alone.
Meanwhile, Merry and Pippin are captured after Boromir is slain, and Sam realises Frodo is heading to Mordor alone and nearly drowns trying to catch up. With the Balrog taking Gandalf in Moria, Boromir's death, Merry and Pippin's capture, and Frodo and Sam heading to Mordor alone, Aragorn makes the difficult decision to abandon Frodo's quest to track down Merry and Pippin. Legolas and Gimli go with Aragorn. In a nutshell, the Fellowship has fallen apart.
