Top 10 Best Depeche Mode Albums

The Top Ten
1 Violator

Classic album from Depeche Mode, their best, followed by:
2) Songs of Faith and Devotion
3) Black Celebration
4) Some Great Reward
5) Music for the Masses

I hope Spirit is another classic album. I have mixed emotions regarding the last three albums. Delta Machine and Sounds of the Universe are well-produced, but the songs mostly aren't as memorable. Playing the Angel had excellent singles, but 3 or 4 average songs made it a bit flawed. Exciter is underrated and actually a very good album. It's a different, more subtle Depeche Mode. Bring on Spirit.

2 Music for the Masses

Great stuff, even today. Classics like Never Let Me Down Again, Behind the Wheel, and Strangelove make this album a monument of its time. So many bands tried to copy those masterpieces.

Really underrated album in my opinion. Better than Violator.
Best single: Behind the Wheel.

A true masterpiece. Great sound, style, and lyrics.

3 Black Celebration

The first DM album I listened to. In 1987 (I was 11 then), I borrowed a vinyl from my friend, and it is still very special to me. My favorite song is Never Let Me Down.

A Question of Time, A Question of Lust, Stripped... Hard choice. Violator is almost as good... Sorry.

Awesome album from start to finish. Dark and sensual.

4 Songs of Faith and Devotion

Best album after the masterpiece Violator - and it even beats it a little bit. Nevertheless, this is my ranking. It's hard to choose the best song from the album:

1. SOAFD (Best: In Your Room)
2. Violator (Best: Policy Of Truth)
3. PTA (Best: Suffer Well)
4. Black Celebration (Best: A Question Of Time)
5. Ultra (Best: It's No Good)
6. MFTM (Best: NLMDA)
7. DM (Best: Broken)
8. SGR (Best: Blasphemous Rumours)
9. SOTU (Best: Wrong)
10. Exciter (Best: Freelove)
11. CTA (Best: Everything Counts)
12. A Broken Frame (Best: The Sun and the Rainfall)
13. Speak & Spell (Best: Photographic)

Each note and each word of this album speaks of passion, love, and the pain within.

5 Playing the Angel

Great tracks. Great album. Great sound. It's a bit underrated. The best-sounding album since SOAFD. Give this one a try - the more you hear it, the more you discover. It's an interesting trip in the DM journey, and in my humble opinion, one of the best DM albums.

Mostly underrated. By far the best post-millennium album. I'm glad not to see it at the bottom, though - it shouldn't be ranked over Ultra.

I believe there are better songs on other albums, like Never Let Me Down Again, I Feel You, Shake the Disease... But looking at the entire album, this one has no breaks.

6 Ultra

Ultra. This CD has a dynamic "bad" sound. I only have this CD and the "singles" CDs, but I'm thinking of picking up a few more. Years ago, I had maybe 10 of their cassettes, but no more. I'm looking for a good newer CD to hear what they sound like now.

An incredible album. Very odd they don't perform songs like Freestate and Insight at all.

A couple of positions ahead would be fair.

7 Some Great Reward

Two absolute killers: Stories of Old and Blasphemous Rumours. A few other good songs - People Are People and Somebody - are overrated, sad to say.

Why is this so low? I feel that an album with such classics as Blasphemous Rumors, Something to Do, Somebody, and People Are People needs more love!

Great highs and lows. Excellent synth. Must check out "Stories of Old" and "Blasphemous Rumors."

8 A Broken Frame

A really underrated album. Leave in Silence, My Secret Garden, The Sun and the Rainfall, and See You are all amazing tracks. I'm voting for this mostly because it's ranked far too low. My favorite is Black Celebration.

A very underrated album. "Leave in Silence" is one of their top 10 songs. Skip "Monument," and the rest are great!

I think it's the most underrated album by DM. My favorite tracks: See You, My Secret Garden, Satellite. The cover is beautiful!

9 Construction Time Again

From top to bottom, this is one of the best albums ever. I'm shocked to see that it's ranked so low on so many charts. I find Violator - most people's favorite album - quite lackluster compared to this collection of hits: Told You So, The Landscape Is Changing, Love, In Itself, More Than a Party, Everything Counts, Shame.

Under Exciter? Come on! At least this was quite innovative, though not popular.

10 Spirit
The Contenders
11 Delta Machine

A new 2013 album from Depeche Mode. Tracklist: Heaven, Welcome to My World, That's All Mine, etc.

The Delta Machine album cover nicely contains a pretty nature picture. This could be a good direction for the band in the future, to bring nature themes into their album cover designs.

Come on, guys, it's the second-best album after Violator.

12 Speak & Spell

The first album from Depeche Mode will never be forgotten. Tracklist: Just Can't Get Enough, New Life, Dreaming of Me, etc.

13 Sounds Of The Universe

If you're in the mood, it's not so bad. If you're not in the mood, well, what can be said? It's just a mood album.

Picked me up when I was low. Now my favorite DM album. Except for Jezebel, I love every track.

14 Exciter

It's a favorite in wintertime.

"When the Body Speaks" is so soothing. I love the chorus because all we need is tenderness.

"Freelove" is another excellent track.

Well done, Martin Gore, for writing these.

I'm disappointed that this album is not rated higher, as it is in my top 5 of all time. I wish people would put on quality earphones, lie down, close their eyes, and listen. It is a superb use of instruments and sounds.
