Top 10 Best The Jam Songs

I've been waiting for this list for quite a while, so I thought I'd make my own.

The Top Ten
  1. Going Underground

  2. Town Called Malice

Don't get me wrong, I love the jam and their style, but I like this so much because it is different. The gift has a totally different style and this is the best on it. Great lyrics, such an upbeat dancy song.

This is The Jam's most famous song. Appeared in so many films! It's so good. For me, it's definitely in the top spot. Every instrument in the song is key! LOVE WELLER'S VOICE!

  3. Down in the Tube Station at Midnight

A true masterpiece! One of The Jam's and England's most brilliant songs. Needs to be in the number one spot!

And I'm down in the tube station at midnight oh whoa oh ohh ohh! - iconic and famous lyrics in England.

    It's our country's national anthem!

I copied the lyrics to this song for some English homework at school back in 1979. I then finished the homework with my own words. Teachers comments were "a stunning beginning and middle section but failed miserably towards the end." Sorry, Mr. Jones (teacher).

    Fred Cannock

  4. That's Entertainment

Bought the LP on release back in 1980, I believe. Still have it and still love it. Brilliant lyrics evoke a melancholy, dreary Englishness (in my mind anyway, down here in Melbourne). Weller may be right when he said the demo is better.

As far as Tube Station, why was our protagonist and his wife having dinner and drinks after midnight?

    "I've a little money and a take-away curry

I'm on my way home to my wife

She'll be lining up the cutlery

    You know she's expecting me

Polishing the glasses and pulling out the cork

And I'm down in the tube station at midnight"

England's best song along with Bittersweet Symphony. Should easily be placed at No. 1. This song represents all that The Jam were about.

  5. The Eton Rifles

Class warfare, in suburban tones with English inferiority complex built-in.

  6. Start

Kind of stunned this is not in the top ten. It's got the catchy Beatles' "Taxman" riff and some good lines: "If we communicate for just two minutes only, that would be... Start!"

  7. Beat Surrender

  8. The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow)

  9. The Butterfly Collector

Almost hypnotic in its verses. Beautiful.

  10. The Modern World

  11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Away from the Numbers

  13. ?

    The Dreams of Children

  14. The Contenders
  15. Strange Town

  16. When You're Young

Absolutely love this song. Lyrics are fantastic and the guitar tops it off. Still get goosebumps listening to it.

The greatest in a great run of singles from The Station to Going Underground. Pure pop genius.

Awesome song - it's what I play to feel better.

  17. Ghosts

Wonderful, thought-provoking tune. Loved it as a 15-year-old as I do today.

  18. Absolute Beginners

  19. In the City

A famed song by The Jam, and rightly so. Has to be their number one!

Great song. Fast, melodic, a great blend of their earlier punk and later pop sound.

Is the best song of The Jam, even better than Town Called Malice.

  20. Man In the Corner Shop

I think this is an amazingly catchy song - one of my favourites - so why is it #16?

  21. English Rose

My favourite song of all time! So slow and peaceful. The singing is angelic. One of the world's best songs. Has to be in the top three of any list. It makes me cry! Such a piece of art.

A truly beautiful song from The Jam.

  22. Funeral Pyre

  23. Private Hell

Incredibly powerful lyrics. Intense energy. Quite simply, in my humble opinion, the best Jam song ever.

  24. Just Who is the 5 O'Clock Hero?

  25. News of the World

  26. Mr. Clean

  27. To Be Someone (Didn't We Have a Nice Time)

  28. In the Crowd

  29. Monday
