Top 10 Musician's Opinions About Music that are Probably True
This list is the opposite of my list Top 10 Musician's Opinions About Music that are Probably False.
-
Alice Cooper on Marilyn Manson: He has a woman's name and wears makeup. How original.
That's true - Marilyn Manson has a woman's name (Marilyn) and wears makeup.
The second sentence is also true: Marilyn Manson isn't original. He ripped off Alice Cooper, who has a woman's name (Alice) and wears makeup.
It's apparently original when Alice Cooper does the exact same thing, though...
-
Kirk Hammett: The same sensations that you get in heavy metal are in horror movies. Heavy metal sounds evil, and horror movies are evil, ha ha!
Many metal bands get their ideas from horror movies. For example, Cannibal Corpse sings about horrific and gruesome stories that you'd find in horror movies because they base their lyrics on them.
Kirk Hammett of Metallica described it very well, I have to admit.
-
Lemmy on Motörhead: We were not heavy metal. We were a rock 'n' roll band. Still are. Everyone always describes us as heavy metal even when I tell them otherwise. Why won't people listen?
It's true. Unlike Ozzy and Dave Grohl, Lemmy knows what metal is.
(He said that in 2011.)
-
Dave Mustaine: I'm not a great singer.
Yes, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth knows his strengths and limitations.
I respect Mustaine for admitting that. At least he isn't delusional like most pop and rap singers who can't hit a note properly without autotune but still think they're the best.
I kind of disagree. He doesn't have a beautiful voice, but he makes it work and can hit the notes.
-
Ritchie Blackmore on B.B. King: You can't say it all with just four notes.
To me, it's not about how many notes you can play, how technical and fast you can perform, or how well you can sing every note. Music is much more than that. It's about getting creative and being able to take ideas and form them into something fresh and new. Take what you have and try to make something worthwhile out of it.
Being able to play well doesn't mean you'll be able to make a song just as good. You just gotta be creative. So in a way, if someone is creative enough, they can make a song using only four notes.
Actually, now that I think of it, it's been done before. In fact, Hans Zimmer even made an entire villain theme just using variations of two different notes. The Joker's theme from The Dark Knight is technically only two notes.
-
Keith Richards on Chuck Berry: I lifted every lick he ever played.
Keith Richards is an English musician, primarily a guitarist, as well as a singer, songwriter, best-selling memoirist, and founding member of the rock band The Rolling Stones. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists in rock history. Richards has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall... read more

Lemmy: Guitar is the best instrument to pose and look cool playing. You can't pose playing a tuba, can you?
Ian Fraser Kilmister, known as Lemmy, was an English musician, singer, and songwriter who founded and fronted the rock band Motörhead. He was a bassist and a singer known for his raspy voice and aggressive playing style. He died in 2015 from prostate cancer, cardiac arrhythmia, and congestive heart failure... read more
You can, but the results will be lame.
-
Angus Young: I'm sick to death of people saying we've made 11 albums that sound exactly the same. In fact, we've made 12 albums that sound exactly the same.
Angus McKinnon Young is an Australian guitarist of Scottish origin, best known as the co-founder, lead guitarist, songwriter, and the only constant member of the Australian hard rock band AC/DC. He is recognized for his energetic stage presence and schoolboy-uniform stage outfits. When performing live... read more
If someone insults you, insult yourself to correct them.
-
Ritchie Blackmore on punk and heavy metal: Metal is better than punk, which means inferior.
This may sound pretentious and snobbish, but I think it's true. Because it's true, it shouldn't be labeled "pretentious" or "snobbish."
I've compared punk and metal many times, and metal wins. I've compared singers, guitarists, drummers, lyrics, and songwriting in general, and metal is better. Metal is harder to write and play.
However, I can't deny that punk influenced extreme metal, especially hardcore punk, but that's a different story.
I hate it when people compare genres.
-
Jon Schaffer: Record companies need to start realizing that they have got to come in as partners of the bands instead of being the pimps and we're their whores. That's the way that artists have been treated for far too long.
Jon Schaffer of metal band Iced Earth.

Lorde: A lot of musicians think they can do pop, and the ones who don't succeed are the ones who don't have the reverence, who think it's just a dumb version of other music.
I must admit I can think of an exception: Colors by Halsey. It's an amazing pop song by an artist who didn't seem to think she was pop at the time.
In general, though, I find that every great pop star has that reverence, so yes, I agree.
Actually, it's really hard. Harmonies, vocal effects, mixing...

?
Chester Bennington: Success is nice, but it shouldn't be the only reason why you're a musician.
-
Geezer Butler: If you are a pop band, don't say you're a metal band. Poison and Warrant were about as metal as the Backstreet Boys.
Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath is a wise man.
-
Tom DeLonge: Looking cool is like 90% of music, or maybe even 93%.
This is very true. Sadly, a lot of music artists, especially pop artists (all countries), are famous for being good-looking rather than for their talent. You can see K-pop artists becoming famous just for getting plastic surgery and being attractive.
How many singers in the music industry are just pretty faces but have no talent? Katy Perry, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, Ross Lynch, Justin Bieber, etc. There are many more. This includes almost all genres.
I agree with this because, sadly, it's true. Metal music is an exception.
-
Sir Christopher Lee: I associate heavy metal with fantasy because of the tremendous power that metal music delivers.
Yes, he's also a musician because he released several metal albums. He was a classically trained singer with a bassy voice.
-
Morrissey: Madonna reinforces everything absurd and offensive. Desperate womanhood. Madonna is closer to organized prostitution than anything else.
-
Jon Bon Jovi on Justin Bieber: He's a music idiot.
This isn't entirely true. He's not a music idiot. He's just an idiot in general.
