On that tragic day, the heavy metal genre (the whole art of music in general) lost a priceless jewel before he could even reach the pinnacle of his songwriting.

Jimmy Buffett's Death

This was a big loss for music. Jimmy Buffett was a legend.
He had a rare form of skin cancer known as Merkel cell carcinoma and kept it private. He passed away on September 1st, shortly after Hurricane Idalia hit Florida and the Carolinas.
He will be remembered for songs such as Margaritaville and for creating the Margaritaville restaurant chain.

Sophie's Fall and Death

The news of Sophie's death from a fall absolutely shocked the world. It was probably the most shocking death of a DJ or any musician since Avicii. It was more shocking than pretty much any other musician's death since those already mentioned.
Not only that, but Sophie created a truly original style by fusing pop with techno and dub to create the microgenre hyperpop. This genre paved the way for the modern generation of music. Many artists have influenced one another and sampled others' works, but Sophie created an entirely new style that nobody else had invented. She was the last truly original producer and artist in music, and there will never be another like her.
Her death truly marked the day music died, as many of the original producers and artists are now gone. Her death was the result of an unexpected fall when she climbed onto her roof to get a better view of the Moon. January 2021 ended tragically with her fall on the 30th. She was 34.
