Top 10 Songs with Sad Meanings
-
Lovers - Jackie Evancho
From the movie "House of Flying Daggers", the song's words are the lead character's dying thoughts as she lays dying in the snow. When she sings, "Oh, where are you? I need to tell you I still love you," it's for her lifelong love who is lying dead in the snow next to her. The haunting final acapella line, "Your voice still echoes... in my heart," is her last thought as she dies.
Epic performance with instrumentation that takes it to another level.
Absolutely incredible. Jackie's the best.

Wake Me Up When September Ends - Green Day
Green Day is a punk rock band with amazing music and Billie Joe Armstrong's wonderful voice. This song is about Billie's father, who died on September 1st from cancer when Billie was 8. He ran home in the middle of the funeral and locked himself in his closet, telling his mother "wake me up when September ends." It makes me feel like it was my own father! Rest in peace.
This is actually a story about the lead singer. His dad died when he was about 8. At his funeral on the first of September, he ran home and his mother found him in his closet. He said, Wake me up when September ends. This song was also played at my cousin's funeral; she died when she was 13.

Beautiful and sad song. I always thought the lyrics were sad and hinted at something deeper and darker, but I was shocked when I found out it was about a school shooting. I still love the song, though. It's incredible and conveys such deep and important messages.

My Immortal - Evanescence
Such a beautifully sad, heart-wrenching song. The meaning is as beautiful and eloquent. For lovers of this song, I also recommend Lost In Paradise and Imaginary, both by Evanescence. Amy Lee is an amazing singer, and her songs always reflect on her voice and the true tragedy of life. While many consider this song to be lazily written, I understand the true meaning and emotions that are evoked in it.
