Top 10 Most Unfairly and Harshly Hated Musical Artists

The Top Ten
  1. Justin Bieber

Justin Drew Bieber (born March 1, 1994) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and record producer. He currently resides in Ontario, Canada, and is Christian. He is the son of Pattie Mallette, an author.

Justin Bieber is best known for his songs "Baby" and "What Do You Mean?" As of mid 2025, 11 of... read more

I never cared for his music, but he always got too much hate. When he was younger, I would say he deserved it because he did really stupid things. However, nowadays, he seems to have matured.

Hating on Bieber was cool in the early 2010s in middle school.

He is a bad singer and all, but you all hate on him too much. He is at the top of basically every list containing the word "worst." Chill.

I am not a fan of his music either - his voice is really bad - but people hate on him way more than he deserves.

I'm not surprised Justin Bieber is on this list. Do I approve of spitting on people? NO. Do I approve of cheating on one's wife? NO. But do I approve of acting like Justin Bieber is the worst person on the planet just because of these things? No.

  2. One Direction

One Direction, commonly abbreviated as 1D, was a British-Irish pop boy band composed of Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik, who departed on March 25, 2015.

The group formed on The X Factor UK in 2010, finished third, and then signed with Simon Cowell's Syco... read more

Sure, it's easy to hate on 1D because of their hysterical fans or their generic music, but some of the boys from 1D have really come a long way in terms of artistry. Harry Styles is a prime example.

  3. Nickelback

Nickelback is a Canadian post-grunge band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta, Canada. The band consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, guitarist, keyboardist, and backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair.... read more

I wouldn't call them good, but they're definitely more what I would think of as "don't really care for them" bad than "worst rock band ever to sign a record deal" bad.

Their music is generic, sure, but they've made some good songs and they are nice guys in real life, apparently.

Their music is good, honestly. I never understood why they got this much hate. Similarly to Justin Bieber, it's probably a case of people bandwagoning.

  4. Rebecca Black

Rebecca Black is a singer and YouTube personality known for her 2011 single "Friday." It became the most disliked video on YouTube until Justin Bieber's "Baby" surpassed it in 2012. She has also released songs like "My Moment" and "Saturday," and continues to create music and content.

I'm shocked that nobody added her to this list, so I did. When "Friday" first came out, people started bashing it and acting like it was the worst thing ever. She was just a young teenager when this song was released, and she ended up getting bullied and receiving death threats because of it.

It seems that she has since distanced herself from "Friday," but the amount of hate and death threats she received was extremely harsh and undeserved. People label her as one of the worst singers of all time solely because of that song.

  5. Taylor Swift

Taylor Alison Swift is an American singer-songwriter born on December 13, 1989, in Reading, Pennsylvania. She developed a strong interest in country music around the age of nine after watching a documentary about Faith Hill. Swift moved to Nashville as a teenager, signed a development deal with RCA Records... read more

The treatment she has received over her past relationships was just unfair. Some people called her a "crazy ex-girlfriend" just for pouring her heart out. Now she finally has a long-lasting relationship and no one talks about it. I guess that's a good thing.

She actually has a GOOD VOICE and GOOD SONGS. I haven't been listening to any of her more recent songs, but all the songs from around 2001-2017 are REALLY good. She gets way too much hate for the substantial amount of talent that she has.

She has made some questionable songs, but her entire discography does not suck. People are just bandwagoning.

  6. Pitbull

Armando Christian Pérez (born January 15, 1981), known professionally as Pitbull, is a Grammy and multiple Latin Grammy-winning Cuban-American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He's released numerous hit singles including I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho), Give Me Everything, and Timber. Pitbull... read more

Those who hate their music or think of their lyrics as overly dramatic probably have no idea what Chester Bennington went through during his youth and his battle with depression, which ultimately got the better of him.

They are not a bad band. They have three good songs, in my opinion. They shouldn't get hated.

  8. John Mayer

John Clayton Mayer is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, and record producer. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Mayer attended Berklee College of Music in Boston but left before graduating. He moved to Atlanta in 1997 with Clay Cook, where they formed a short-lived two-man band called Lo-Fi Masters... read more

Wow, that comment about Jessica Simpson. Sigh. What was he thinking? However, I will concede that a lot of people seem to claim his music is bad without much of a concrete reason.

I just found out he plays on Pyramids by Frank Ocean, so that on its own puts him in my good books as a musician, at least.

Aside from his high-profile relationships and some cringeworthy or degrading post-breakup confessions he made (e.g., calling Jessica Simpson a "sexual napalm"), he is a very talented musician and songwriter.

  9. Ariana Grande

Ariana Grande‑Butera (born June 26, 1993) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Her four‑octave vocal range has earned widespread critical praise, and her personal life continues to attract significant media attention. 11. The Newcomers
  12. ?

    Jelly Roll

Here's another artist people love to hate because of his criminal record. Jelly Roll was indeed arrested about 40 times in his life, but he's probably a better person now than he was as a teenager and young adult.

Besides, his music is not bad at all, so if you don't like it, move on.

  13. ?

    Ashlee Simpson

Ashley Nicolle Simpson, known professionally as Ashlee Simpson, is an American singer-songwriter, actress, and media personality. She rose to fame in the early 2000s with her debut album Autobiography, which reached number one on the Billboard 200 in 2004. She has also appeared in television shows and... read more

Her lip-sync during SNL is definitely one of the most infamous music moments of all time, but honestly, she's not a bad singer and made some decent pop songs in the 2000s, such as "Pieces of Me," "La La," and "Autobiography."

She made better music than her sister Jessica, who always sounded like a desperate Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera wannabe.

  14. The Contenders
  15. Beyoncé

Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter is an American singer, songwriter, and actress who began her career as the lead singer of Destiny's Child. The group scored multiple Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hits, including "Say My Name," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Independent Women Part I," and "Bootylicious." After the group... read more

Should be higher. Most hatred toward Beyoncé is because of her obnoxious fans and the idea that she is overpraised. Both reasons have nothing to do with her.

If you look at her Metacritic scores, she isn't overpraised.

I agree with this, even though I'm not a fan of her music. She does get hate because of many of her rabid fans.

  16. Post Malone

Austin Richard Post, born July 4, 1995, and known professionally as Post Malone, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter, record producer, and guitarist. He gained recognition in 2015 with his debut single, White Iverson. Since then, he has released multiple chart-topping albums and won several music... read more

I understand that some people hate him because most of his songs sound the same or because of his raspy vocals. However, he's very friendly in real life and is definitely someone I would have a drink with.

At least he knows his music sucks. He said it himself. And he's a cool dude, no doubt about that.

  17. Flo Rida

Tramar Lacel Dillard, better known by his stage name Flo Rida, is an American rapper and pop music artist from Carol City, Florida. He is known for songs such as "Low," "Right Round," "Sugar," "Club Can't Handle Me," "Good Feeling," "Whistle," "Wild Ones," "My House," and "GDFR." Flo Rida has achieved... read more

I bet there are two types of people who hate BMTH: (1) people who hate metalcore, and (2) people who hated their change in genre. Needless to say, BMTH is a great band, even when they sound "poppier."

  19. Bono

Paul David Hewson (born May 10, 1960), known professionally as Bono, is an Irish singer-songwriter, musician, philanthropist, and businessman. He is best known as the lead vocalist and primary lyricist of the rock band U2.... read more

I know he's pretentious to some people and that others are mad at him because of U2 dropping their album on everyone's iPhones without their consent. However, he's a great man who does a lot of charity work.

  20. Selena Gomez

Selena Marie Gomez is an American actress and singer. She's best known for her hit songs "Come & Get It," "Good for You," "Same Old Love," and "It Ain't Me," as well as her starring role as Alex Russo on Wizards of Waverly Place. Her music has explored different styles, including electropop and Latin... read more

Whether it's because she dated Justin Bieber when they were young or because she made silly pop songs, she doesn't deserve the hate she gets.

I wouldn't say she's an amazing act or anything, and I can definitely understand why someone would dislike her music (even if I honestly like a lot of her songs). However, she is a frequent target of the "not a real music artist" criticism and gets a bunch of personal attacks for little discernible reason.

  21. Richard Wagner

Wilhelm Richard Wagner was a German composer, theatre director, polemicist, and conductor who is primarily known for his operas. His compositions, particularly those in the cycle Der Ring des Nibelungen, revolutionized opera through their complex textures and expanded use of leitmotifs. Wagner also... read more

Despite his massive success, Phil Collins has had a lot of haters. Some argue that Genesis sold out when he became the lead singer, while others dislike him because he was everywhere in the 1980s or because of his nasally vocals or vapid lyrics.

However, what people tend to forget is that Phil Collins is a gifted musician and a nice, funny person in real life.

  23. Marilyn Manson

Brian Hugh Warner (born January 5, 1969), better known by his stage name Marilyn Manson, is an American rock musician, songwriter, actor, painter, multimedia artist, author, and former music journalist. He is the lead singer and only constant member of the band Marilyn Manson, which he formed in 1989.... read more

I mean, he does have some damning sexual assault allegations against him, and he's burned a Bible before.

  24. Chris Brown

Christopher Maurice "Chris" Brown (born May 5, 1989) is an American singer, songwriter, dancer, and actor. Born in Tappahannock, Virginia, he participated in his church choir and several local talent shows from a young age. He gained international notoriety in 2009 for his physical assault of singer... read more

This pick might be controversial, but I'm starting to think that the hate for Chris Brown is becoming overblown. I've hated Chris Brown myself, but I've grown weary of wishing he would just fade into irrelevancy.

I felt especially bad for him when the American Music Awards, who had initially booked him for a Michael Jackson tribute, canceled his performance at the last minute without giving many reasons. Afterward, Brown posted some videos of the rehearsals, and it looked like it would've been an amazing performance, probably his best in over a decade. If the AMAs didn't want him to perform, they should've just not picked him instead of humiliating him by canceling last minute.

And besides, that time he beat Rihanna was over a decade ago, and Rihanna forgave him. So why don't we just move on from this as well? Until he's accused of rape or domestic violence again, of course. But if Breezy has a chance at redeeming himself for good, it's now.

  25. Nina Hagen

Catharina Hagen, better known by her stage name Nina Hagen, is a German singer-songwriter and actress born on March 11, 1955, in former East Berlin. She gained fame in the late 1970s as the lead singer of the Nina Hagen Band. With the band, she released two studio albums before starting a successful... read more

Her breakthrough came with viral hits such as Hot Girl Summer and Savage, which have earned her multiple awards... read more

I would definitely say there is a running theme of artists people tear into personally without them doing anything wrong.

Honestly, the comments about her, especially those basically mocking her after she was shot, are utterly disgusting.

I have no idea why some people hate Megan Thee Stallion. Sure, her music isn't great, but she was shot and almost killed by her boyfriend, Tory Lanez. Megan Thee Stallion doesn't deserve to be hated. She needs more respect.

  27. AC/DC

AC/DC is an Australian hard rock band founded in November 1973 by brothers Malcolm and Angus Young. Bon Scott was the lead singer from 1974 until his death from acute alcohol poisoning in 1980. He was succeeded by Brian Johnson.... read more

Yeah, most of their songs sound the same and the guy's vocals sound like a rooster. However, they are not bad artists. They are okay and made memorable songs.

  28. Lil Wayne

He was discovered by Bryan "Birdman" Williams at a young age and signed to Cash Money Records, where he became one-quarter of the rap group Hot Boys. Nah, Kodak Black deserves the hate because of the things he did that sent him to jail.
