The Greatest Songs of 2018 According To Laut.de

On December 7th of 2018, the German music critic website revealed their 30 picks for the best songs of the year 2018.

It is debatable whether it makes sense creating such a list when there are still three weeks of the year to come (SPOILER: it doesn’t), but let’s not waste time wondering about the premise itself and immediately take a look at the list itself.

Let’s mention the most obvious first: none of these songs were hits in Germany. No, not even the hip hop songs that topped the US charts, and not even the German ones. And that’s perfectly fine in and of itself - the most popular songs aren’t necessarily the greatest ones, but it’s no quality seal excluding them. And they made it perfectly clear that’s what they were going for, as they were proudly announcing it in the opening text, followed by a list of the most streamed songs of the year (including songs from albums that received positive reviews from them), all of which they ignored for the list. They did the same in previous years: some of the best songs were also highly popular (“Rolling in the Deep”? “Paradise”? “Rise Like a Phoenix”?) and still found no place on their lists.

Nevertheless, most of the songs on the list aren’t half bad, and their number 1 tune - which most of you will be familiar with - really is one of the greatest tracks the year had to offer, and I can actually agree with it ranking so highly.

One more thing I noticed: is it coincidental that the two artists with the word "Phoenix" rank right after the other?
