Most Overused Tropes in Dystopian Teen Fiction
Teen dystopias are some of the most popular books out there... but some just rehash the same old tropes over and over again. Which are your least favorites? Feel free to add any that I have not included! (BTW, I actually love a lot of these books, especially Hunger Games, even if they overuse some stuff.)The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner, The Selection, Legend, Matched, Shatter Me... I'm sure there are others. Be sure to list any I've left out!
Okay, I know a lot of people will totally disagree...but I just find it obnoxious and unrealistic that just about EVERY SINGLE young adult dystopian novel has a guy and a girl who fall in love. It just seems extremely unrealistic and I wish there would finally be a book without it.
Maze Runner is really bad about this one (The Maze, The Glade, The Grievers, The Changing, The Gone, The Flare, The Scorch XD). Others include The Society, The Selection and The Testing hahahaha.
Katniss Everdeen, Beatrice Prior, America Singer, Cassia Reyes, Melanie Stryder, June Iparis, Juliette Ferrars, Malencia Vale, Cassiopeia Sullivan, Brooke Moore, Sloane Barstow...once again, not horrible, especially considering most of these authors are women. Just a little repetitive.
Usually goes with the Evil Government trope.
Reaping Day, Choosing Ceremony, Matched Banquet... Not a huge deal, but still a little overused.
Katniss's dad, Tris' parents, Day's parents, June's parents, Thomas's parents, blah blah blah. Congratulations to Joelle Charboneau...she didn't fall into this trap!
It started out really well with the Hunger Games...then Divergent, and Skyship Academy, and Legend, and The Testing, and Matched... XD
