Top Ten Bosses in the Donkey Kong Country Series

The Donkey Kong Country bosses are not as memorable as other Nintendo franchises such as Mario and Zelda (maybe excluding the final bosses). So I've decided to give these baddies some appreciation and count down the top ten Donkey Kong Country Bosses.

The criteria I'm looking for is as follows:
- The difficulty of the boss is a massive factor as the DKC games are very much known for being notoriously difficult.
- How unique the boss is, I don't just want to play the waiting game for the boss to show its obvious weak spot, a good boss has a unique theme and a good personality.
- Fun factor is important. It's a game for crying out loud, you're meant to have fun and how fun these bosses are will determine their spot on the list.

Yes, if you didn't know DK64 IS a game from the series, just in case there are any doubters.
The Top Ten
1 King K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country) King K. Rool is a fictional anthropomorphic crocodile and the main antagonist of Nintendo's Donkey Kong video game franchise, as well as the archenemy of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

King K. Rool from the very first DKC game is a magnificent boss. Although you may think he has a lot going against him - he doesn't appear in the game until you fight him, his weak spot is obvious, and the fight itself is relatively short - everything else is pure perfection.

The music is perfect. It starts with an innocent little tune but then gets deeper as you continue with the boss. The atmosphere changes immediately to this dark, eerie theme. It is an extremely catchy tune, which is why it's become so iconic over the years.

K. Rool is a great villain too. He is a very exaggerated character, and every attack he does really emphasizes this fact. His stupidly high jump and the sounds he makes are an example.

The battle itself is one to be remembered. It tests everything you've learned from the whole game. The fake ending is also very unique and special.

2 King K. Rool (Donkey Kong 64) King K. Rool is a fictional anthropomorphic crocodile and the main antagonist of Nintendo's Donkey Kong video game franchise, as well as the archenemy of Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong.

In some ways, Donkey Kong 64 fixed every problem the first K. Rool fights had. They were much longer, you got to see K. Rool frequently before the fight, and the weak spot was a little less obvious.

You use each Kong to damage K. Rool until you use Donkey Kong to deal the final blow. The boss takes place in a boxing ring with K. Rool in fitting boxing attire. Every stage has K. Rool do something different, and it is quite the challenge to take him down.

The reason this isn't number 1 is because the music isn't as good, K. Rool isn't as expressive, and it doesn't have the surprise of a fake ending or anything. It still is a great fight though.

3 King Zing Sting (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)

King Zing Sting is the first regular animal boss on our list, and he sure is memorable. You catch a small glimpse of him in the previous level, and I nearly jumped out of my seat when he suddenly appeared.

He is quite a hard boss to defeat, especially as a parrot, and when you actually defeat him, he just turns into smaller bees to ruin your day even more!

This boss is memorable as he would be scary to young kids. His early reveal makes him unique, unlike the other non-K. Rool bosses of the game.

Man, this boss was creative. It may look like a regular giant Zinger, but it's way harder than Bumble B. Rumble from the original game. Hit his stinger many times with Squawks's rapid-fire nuts, and he splits into low-level mook Zingers for you to kill to your heart's content.

It is my second favorite boss of the franchise, alongside Kleever and Kaptain K. Rool.

4 Tiki Tong (Donkey Kong Country Returns)

The first boss of the revived series on our list so far, Tiki Tong is the final boss in DKC Returns. To dodge his attacks, you'll mostly have to depend on how you time your jumps, or else you'll be crushed. It tests everything you've learned in the game yet again, although it doesn't have the same difficulty as King K. Rool's fight.

Tiki Tong isn't the most memorable character either. His fight was fun enough to give him 4th place, though.

5 Bashmaster (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze)

Bashmaster is the boss in the 5th world of the game. He is a large polar bear who tries to kill you because you ruined his delicious popsicle. Seems like a reasonable guy.

He jumps around with his hammer for his attacks, and you have to knock him off the iceberg you fight on. The more soaked in purple juice (supposedly melted popsicle) he becomes, the angrier and harder he gets to defeat.

He is probably the most fun boss to fight, in my opinion. I like Bashmaster's methods of combat. He is the best boss in Tropical Freeze.

6 Lord Fredrik (Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze)

Lord Fredrik, the final boss in the most recent DKC game, is a very cool boss, if you know what I mean.

Bad jokes aside, Fredrik is a tough egg to crack, and his fast attacks make him a little more difficult than your average slow Nintendo boss. It's a very fun fight, and it's very satisfying to see him go down.

He's a fairly good boss and character.

7 Kaptain K. Rool (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Quest)

Kaptain K. Rool is the final boss of the second game. He is almost as tough, if not tougher than the first encounter. The music, while not as good as the previous fights, is still excellent.

The fight itself is different from the others, with you using K. Rool's own weapon against him, which is good karma. Kaptain K. Rool is also my favorite persona of the king, which gives it bonus points. It's not too high because I don't want to make all the top picks K. Rool, so I plopped him down here.

King K. Rool uses this attack method in Smash Bros!

8 Dogadon (Donkey Kong 64)

Finally, we have Dogadon. You fight him as Diddy Kong in a volcano, and you have to defeat him before the platform sinks to the ground. This concept alone sounds exciting. You'll have to be on your toes at all times.

I haven't even talked about the fight itself yet. Dogadon is a bright yellow dog creature which uses fire-based attacks against you, requiring timing to dodge, which is why this takes place in a volcano. I love this fight and its unique concept.

9 Belcha (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)

Belcha is the first boss in the game and the best. He is a unique boss, being a barrel. While he isn't that hard (for being the first boss in the game), he just spits out various bugs and barrels. The way to defeat him is obvious, which is to throw the bugs back in his mouth.

We don't usually see enemies in the game other than animals, so seeing a large barrel suddenly appear is surprising. This gives him 9th place on this list.

10 Kaos (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)

This boss is unique as he appears two times - once as a regular boss and the other encounter being right before you battle K. Rool. He is quite the challenging boss in both fights. He may just be a big dumb barrel, but he will destroy you if you take the wrong steps.

The Contenders
11 Kudgel (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)
12 Kerozene (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)
13 Bleak (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)

He's a really interesting take on a boss fight. Not only does he have a Charles Dickens reference with "Bleak's House," but he also challenges you to a snowball fight. He's pretty fun, and that's what a boss needs.

14 Barbos (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)
15 Krow (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)
16 Kleever (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest)
17 Baron K. Roolenstein (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)
18 Mad Jack (Donkey Kong 64)

This is the boss battle I most associate with DK64. Also, he uses archive audio of Clarence Nash, the original voice of Donald Duck.

19 Catcus King (Donkey Kong Jungle Beat)

Easiest final boss ever, but don't let that put you off. He's an awesome boss.

20 Torch Tusk (Donkey Kong Jungle Beat)
21 Gloat Hog (Donkey Kong Jungle Beat)
22 Master Necky Snr. (Donkey Kong Country)
23 Colonel Pluck (Donkey Kong Country Returns)
24 Squirt (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)
25 Kroctopus (Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble)

Although he only appeared in the horrid GBA remake, I have to say that he is my favorite boss in the whole game. He has an extremely green design, and the music is awesome!
