Worst Events of the 1990s
Because of the internet rising, communist countries breaking apart, and the economy rising, the 1990s were quite eventful, but everything has a negative side to it. So here are the worst events to ever take place in the 90s.What a horrible and deadly war. Worse of all, NATO had to bomb them and make the situation there worse.
After the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s many series of wars ensued. It created issues between various ethnic groups that resided in the former nation. This included genocides, one of them is on this list, and rape. Overall, it's considered one of the deadliest wars since World War 2, taking the lives of 140,000 men and women.
I took a history course around genocide awareness not too long ago. I can still vividly remember seeing the horrific results of the Rwandan genocide. An entire building of people attempting to hide, invaded and leaving little to no survivors. At least a couple hundred bodies decimated and scattered across every single room. It still haunts my memory today, and makes me wonder why some would go to these lengths to "cleanse" their nation.
During the summer of 1994, the Tutsis were killed by the Hutu. During this time, Rwanda was lead by the Hutu. They believed that the Tutsis were evil, and must be eradicated. Around 500,000 to 1,000,000 lives were lost. Because of the genocide, the United Nations were questioned, as they did absolutely did nothing to prevent this.
It's just Holocaust but if it happened in Africa. Enough said.
As usual, the U.N. did nothing. Just horrible.
This deserved it's own spot, apart from Yugoslav Wars. In July 11, 1995, a Serb Army of Republika Srpska invaded the town of Srebrenica. For the next 11 days the army committed a genocide, killing about 8,400 Bosniaks, which are a native ethnic group in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Two domestic terrorists, both former soldiers, decided to bomb a federal office in Oklahoma City. This attack took the lives of 169 people, and more than 680 non-fatal injuries. This was the worst terrorist attack America has gone through, until 9/11 Attacks.
What was even worse was that the perpetrators of this bombing even blew up a daycare and killed several children.
The guy who caused the bombing has the same last name as me.
I hope me and Timothy mcveigh are not related.
People always think that NYC was peaceful before 9/11, but 9/11 attacks wasn't the first attack on the World Trade Center. In fact, the North Tower was bombed in 1993, killing 6 people and injuring 1,000 others. This however, could've been worse if it was a success, which would've killed 10,000 more people and destroyed the both Twin Towers.
On 4/20/99, two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold came to Columbine High School. They shot and killed 12 students and one teacher, and leaving 21 wounded by them. Later on, both the shooters committed suicide. The motives aren't clear, but one possible motive was that they were bullied. This shooting would've been worse if the bombs at the cafeteria detonated.
What do you expect? This was the shooting that influenced many other school shootings, especially Sandy Hook and Parkland.
This school shooting changed everything. It woke people up about school safety.
In April of 1992, 4 Officers, who beat up Rodney King, were acquitted. This caused a series of violent riots occurring throughout Los Angeles. Even though this was 6 days long, it claimed the lives of 63 people, 2,283 injured, and costed one billion dollars in damage.
Hurricane Andrew was a Category 5 hurricane at peak intensity. It made a landfall in Florida, around Miami, and later in Louisiana in August 1992. In total, it left 65 people dead, destroyed about 64,000 houses, and was the costliest hurricane in history, until Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
On August 31st of 1997, three people died, and one injured from a car crash in Paris, France. This included Princess Diana of Wales. The paparazzi, which was following the car, and the driver decided to go at a high speed. In result, the funeral of Princess Diana was watched by over 2 billion people.
When a member of the British ROYAL FAMILY died. Very heartbreaking and barely anyone in America even knows about this.
Around 11:15 PM Pacific Time, 9/7/96, a famous rapper, Tupac, was shot four times in a drive-by-shooting after a boxing match between Bruce Seldon and Mike Tyson. Tupac later died six days later. To this day, the shooter is still unknown. Some suspects include gangsters representing the East Coast, and the Crisps. Similarly, Notorious B.I.G., who was an East Coast rapper, died from a drive-by-shooting on March of 1997, six months later.
Blamed for doing something he didn't do then lost fans then had to pay a whole lot of money... sad
