Worst Events of the 1990s

Because of the internet rising, communist countries breaking apart, and the economy rising, the 1990s were quite eventful, but everything has a negative side to it. So here are the worst events to ever take place in the 90s.
The Top Ten
1 Yugoslav War (1991)

What a horrible and deadly war. Worst of all, NATO had to bomb them and made the situation there worse.

After the breakup of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s, many series of wars ensued. It created issues between various ethnic groups that resided in the former nation. This included genocides, one of them is on this list, and rape. Overall, it's considered one of the deadliest wars since World War II, taking the lives of 140,000 men and women.

2 Rwandan Genocide (1994)

I took a history course around genocide awareness not too long ago. I can still vividly remember seeing the horrific results of the Rwandan genocide. An entire building of people attempting to hide was invaded, leaving little to no survivors. At least a couple hundred bodies were decimated and scattered across every single room.

It still haunts my memory today and makes me wonder why some would go to these lengths to "cleanse" their nation.

During the summer of 1994, the Tutsis were killed by the Hutu. At this time, Rwanda was led by the Hutu. They believed that the Tutsis were evil and must be eradicated. Around 500,000 to 1,000,000 lives were lost. Because of the genocide, the United Nations was questioned, as they did absolutely nothing to prevent this.

3 Srebrenica Genocide (1995)

This deserved its own spot, apart from the Yugoslav Wars. On July 11, 1995, the Serb Army of Republika Srpska invaded the town of Srebrenica. For the next 11 days, the army committed a genocide, killing about 8,400 Bosniaks, who are a native ethnic group in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

4 Oklahoma City Bombing (1995)

Two domestic terrorists, both former soldiers, decided to bomb a federal office in Oklahoma City. This attack took the lives of 169 people and caused more than 680 non-fatal injuries. This was the worst terrorist attack America had gone through until the 9/11 attacks.

What was even worse was that the perpetrators of this bombing blew up a daycare and killed several children.

The guy who caused the bombing has the same last name as me. I hope me and Timothy McVeigh are not related.

5 World Trade Center Bombing (1993)

People always think that NYC was peaceful before 9/11, but the 9/11 attacks weren't the first attack on the World Trade Center. In fact, the North Tower was bombed in 1993, killing six people and injuring 1,000 others. However, this could have been worse if it had been a success, which would have killed 10,000 more people and destroyed both Twin Towers.

6 Columbine High School Shooting (1999)

On April 20, 1999, two senior students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, came to Columbine High School. They shot and killed 12 students and one teacher, leaving 21 wounded. Later, both shooters committed suicide. The motives aren't clear, but one possible motive was that they were bullied. This shooting could have been worse if the bombs in the cafeteria had detonated.

What do you expect? This was the shooting that influenced many other school shootings, especially Sandy Hook and Parkland.

This school shooting changed everything. It woke people up about school safety.

7 L.A. Riots (1992)

In April of 1992, four officers who beat up Rodney King were acquitted. This caused a series of violent riots throughout Los Angeles. Even though this was six days long, it claimed the lives of 63 people, injured 2,283, and caused one billion dollars in damage.

8 Hurricane Andrew Made a Landfall (1992)

Hurricane Andrew was a Category 5 hurricane at peak intensity. It made landfall in Florida, around Miami, and later in Louisiana in August 1992. In total, it left 65 people dead, destroyed about 64,000 houses, and was the costliest hurricane in history until Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

9 Death of Princess Diana (1997)

On August 31, 1997, three people died and one was injured from a car crash in Paris, France. This included Princess Diana of Wales. The paparazzi, which were following the car, and the driver decided to go at a high speed. As a result, the funeral of Princess Diana was watched by over 2 billion people.

When a member of the British royal family died. Very heartbreaking and barely anyone in America even knows about this.

10 Death of Tupac (1996)

Around 11:15 PM Pacific Time, 9/7/96, the famous rapper Tupac was shot four times in a drive-by shooting after a boxing match between Bruce Seldon and Mike Tyson. Tupac later died six days later. To this day, the shooter is still unknown. Some suspects include gangsters representing the East Coast and the Crips.

Similarly, Notorious B.I.G., who was an East Coast rapper, died from a drive-by shooting in March of 1997, six months later.
