Top 10 Signs that Internet Drama Has Gone Too Far

Here are some signs to look out for when it comes to internet drama, signs that it's gone beyond what it reasonably should.

  1. Someone gets doxxed

  2. Death threats are made

    Now, to make something clear, disagreements on the internet are inevitable. And I do encourage healthy disagreement discourse that's civil. However, once you make a threat that endangers someone else, that's a sign you've gone off the deep end and need to reevaluate your actions. We can agree to disagree, but this is beyond excessive.

  3. Slurs are used

    I feel like if you can't refute something with evidence, reasoning, or analysis, and instead resort to using racial, homophobic, or ableist slurs, you've already lost the plot. People who still use slurs are incapable of providing an actual argument, and it's the quickest way to shoot yourself in the foot and lose a debate, no doubt about it.

  4. Racial attacks are made

    This is just common sense, no? If your only rebuttal against someone is making racial remarks about their ethnicity, that's also a sign that you're going too far and taking things way too seriously. This seems to have become way too common in internet discourse.

  5. Sexual harassment occurs

    It genuinely does disgust me when this occurs, especially considering how it can result in long-lasting damage to someone's mental health that can take decades to fully recover from. Thankfully, not everyone is like this, but there are cases where this happens, and the person who instigates such harassment usually gets karma within months or years.

  6. Someone gets swatted

    This doesn't happen as much anymore, but I feel like it's worth including. Swatting someone boils down to someone making a false report to the police that so-and-so is a dangerous criminal, and results in a SWAT team showing up to arrest and assault the person in question. I think around 2017 or 2016, it started to die down a little bit, but I could be wrong.

  7. Homophobic remarks are made

  8. Ableist remarks are made

  9. Harassment gets so bad that someone else's mental health is in jeopardy
