Top Ten Reasons Germany Lost WW2

There were several factors as to why Germany lost WW2. Some say Hitler, others blame the Axis’ incompetence, but it was really a culmination of that and a whole lot more that Hitler and the Nazis did wrong that eventually came back to haunt them. A lot of people don't realize how close Germany was to winning WW2. Germany could have easily won the war as early as late-1941 but all their progress was seemingly stopped so suddenly and reversed in a few years. In this list I will be giving ten reasons on why Germany lost WW2. Also a shout out to the user 2storm who helped me make this list and assisted in other parts. https://www.thetoptens.com/m/2storm/ Now, let’s get into it.

1 Adolf Hitler's Poor Decisions During The War Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889 - April 30, 1945) was a German politician of Austrian descent who served as the leader of the Nazi Party since 1921, Chancellor of Germany since 1933, and Führer of Nazi Germany since 1934. As dictator of Nazi Germany, he reversed the Treaty of Versailles, initiated World War II in Europe with the invasion of Poland in September 1939, and was a central figure of the Holocaust... read more

Although Hitler was a great politician, some of the worst decisions by Germany during the war were his fault. Early in the war when they blitzkrieg'd through the Ardennes, they could have also defeated the British forces as well but Hitler halted the troops, allowing the British to escape at Dunkirk. When Germany was making progress against the British in the air battles, Hitler was distracted by a small bombing of Berlin and allowed the British to recover and beat him in the Battle of Britain. Hitler also for some reason declared war on the United States which he didn't have to as the United States didn't even mention Germany in their declaration of war, but Hitler was cocky and thought he could speed up his lebensraum plan. Not only did he declare war with the United States, he also invaded the Soviet Union in the same year. When the Germans were invading the Soviet Union, Hitler ordered his armies to take Kiev instead of pushing to Moscow which was an initial success but taking Moscow could have ended the Soviet Union. Hitler also didn't give any of his soldiers proper winter attire and they were not ready for the harsh winter. The decision of rerouting one of his armies before the Battle of Stalingrad was a massive blunder, ending any German offensives in the Soviet Union. Hitler sent the German and Italian forces led by Erwin Rommel to El Alamein and were defeated since they didn't have enough reinforcements. Hitler sent troops to Africa but it was too late as the Germans were defeated and the Allies captured hundreds of thousands of Axis soldiers. Allied deception tactics also made Hitler be unprepared for D-Day as he lost France swiftly. As the Allies began closing in on Germany, Hitler sent all of his troops through the Ardennes again for the Battle of the Bulge. Hitler wasted the last of the German soldiers and supplies and were defeated shortly after. Finally Hitler's strategy of staying and never retreating was extremely costly, losing entire armies... more

2 Fighting A War On Two Fronts

Germany was doing incredibly well in the preparation stages and the earlier stages of WW2. They had captured/occupied Austria , Czechoslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Norway, Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Yugoslavia, and Greece by 1941. Germany had knocked out France and was making plans for an invasion of Great Britain. After losing the Battle of Britain, which I'll get to later, Germany started the largest ground invasion in history with over 3,000,000 troops entering the Soviet Union in 1941. They were doing well taking a large part of the Soviet Union, until they lost some battles we will get to later. If Germany had delayed their invasion of the Soviet Union until the Spring or invaded earlier they could have beaten them, which would avoid fighting in two fronts. Germany had to face both the Americans and British in Western Europe, Americans and British in Southern Europe and Africa, and the Soviets in Eastern Europe causing divides within Germany's armies and troops, which ...more

Not two, but three fronts. Africa, Britain and the East front; and not to mention all the soldiers there had to maintain in Norway, the Balkans, the Atlantic Ocean and France.

3 Germany Declares War On The United States of America

When Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Dec. 1941, they both declared war on each other and so did Germany but they didn't have to. They were in the Tripartite Pact, but that was Japan's own mess they got into. Hitler's alliance with Japan ended up being a major factor in the German defeat as American troops began landing in Africa and Europe and gave the Allies a fresh new set of troops to use. They could have prevented D-Day and ditched their "ally", but Hitler again ruined his plan with another costly mistake.

4 Germany's Lack of Preparation For The Winter

After defeating France and taking over their African territories, the Germans prepared for their invasion of the Soviet Union. The Germans had lost the Battle of Britain, which I'll get to later, but they thought they were in good position to invade. After their invasion was delayed for over six weeks because of the failed Italian invasion of Greece, the Germans were finally ready to invade. With support from Bulgaria, Italy, Finland, and Romania they begun their invasion. The German led advancement was going incredibly well as they had taken Bialystok, Minsk, Smolensk, Kiev, Vyazma, and Bryansk alwhile capturing millions of Soviet soldiers along the way. The Germans made it all the way to Moscow but the winter came and the troops were far from ready. Hitler forced the armies to keep going even though his generals and advisors told him to dig in for the winter. The armies couldn't survive in the cold as they didn't have the supplies necessary to do so and the Axis Powers were pushed ...more

5 Battle Of Stalingrad

This is what I and a lot of people consider the turning point of the war. After the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the Germans had gotten all the way to Moscow with some key encircling strategies to capture cities and Soviet troops. However, the winter came in and the Germans were not prepared being defeated by the Soviets in some battles. After the winter, the Germans decided to invade the Caucasus which had a lot of oil fields. The plan was going great until they entered the city of Stalingrad. Hitler was heavily interested in taking over Stalingrad as he could use it to promote his propaganda and it was a city full of industrial resources. The Soviets during this point had lost millions of men do to the fighting and lack of supplies, so Germany decided to move their 4th army South to help in the fighting leaving the 6th army to take a heavily loved and defended city. The Germans would end up paying the ultimate price and karma for moving the 4th army too soon, as the Soviets ...more

6 D-Day

After being taken out of Africa and with the Allies pushing in from Italy and Eastern Europe, the Allies began making plans for an invasion from the North/France in 1944. Germany prepared for the invasion, but with some deception tactics from the Allies, the Germans were unprepared in some of the beaches allowing the Allies to make successful landings in Utah, Omaha, Gold, Sword, and Juno. The Allies swept through France while capturing the German 7th army via an encircling movement. With some Allied reinforcements landing in the South of France, the Germans were pushed out of France as the Allies were now at the gates of Germany. This item is lower on the list as Germany was already in a losing scenario when D-Day occurred, this just solidified the German defeat.

7 Axis Powers Being Bad Allies Italy (Italian: Repubblica Italiana) is a sovereign state and unitary parliamentary republic in south-central Europe.

Italy covers an area of 301,338 km². With almost 62 million inhabitants, it is the third most populous EU member state. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino, and Vatican City. The... read more

It seems like a recurring trend in both World Wars. Germany always does almost everything right in both wars, making significant progress but their poor choice in Allies eventually cost them as they had to move troops to help them accomplish simple tasks. The invasions in Egypt and Greece lead by Italy forced Hitler to send troops and halt many of the plans he had ready. Italy's sudden surrender and turn on Germany proves that Italy was a bad ally. Japan also wasn't very helpful as they provoked the United States to join the war by bombing Pearl Harbor and bringing them into the war. Japan also was battling America so they couldn't assist Germany during the war. If Germany had chosen better allies for the war, they could have won but Hitler's poor judgement on allies ruined their chances of winning the war.

They might not have won but if German allies like Italy were more competent German resources could be used elsewhere.

8 The Northern Africa Collapse Egypt, officially the Arab Republic of Egypt, is a transcontinental country spanning the northeast corner of Africa and southwest corner of Asia via a land bridge formed by the Sinai Peninsula. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Gaza Strip (Palestine) and Israel to the northeast, the Red Sea to the east, Sudan to the south, and Libya to the west. The Gulf of Aqaba in the northeast separates Egypt from Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Cairo is the capital and largest city of Egypt, while Alexandria, the second-largest city, is an important industrial and tourist hub at the Mediterranean coast. At approximately 100 million inhabitants, Egypt is the 14th-most populated country in ...read more.

After Germany captured France in 1940, Germany acquired all of the territory France had in Africa. Germany and Italy both had territory in Africa so Italy continued advancements into British controlled Egypt in 1940. Another Italian blunder forced the Germans to intervene and help fight for Egypt again in 1941. A small Australian force helped buy the British time and slowed down Rommel and his forces. Rommel's forces were doing extremely well as they were in the offensive with the German and Italian force. When Rommel's armies got to El Alamein they were defeated because of long supply lines while the British were ready since their supply lines were very short. The Americans had arrived by 1942 and with the British and American new found offensive, they removed the Germans and the Italians forcing them into Italy and Greece or surrendering entirely in 1943. If Italy could have handled their business in Egypt, the Germans wouldn't have had to waste their troops in a costly campaign.

9 Battle of Britain The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly shortened to United Kingdom, UK or Britain is a Sovereign State located of the Northwestern coast of Europe. It is a Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy currently lead by Monarch Queen Elizabeth II and its current prime minister is Boris Johnson. The UK is a Unitary State consisting of Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland... read more

After taking over France, Germany and Hitler began making plans to invade Great Britain. German Luftwaffe began making bombings on ports and coastal cities in Britain. Then they began to attack RAF bases to destroy planes and not allow Britain to create more planes or defend the country. Churchill ordered a small bombing over Berlin which made Hitler move his focus to London, allowing the RAF to recover from the previous attacks. In the battle, the British defeated the Germans, destroying several planes from the Luftwaffe and denying Hitler the English Channel. If Hitler would have continued with the earlier plan, the German ground invasion of Great Britain could have occurred and they could have potentially knocked out Great Britain and ended the war.

Although The Fuhrer Can't Even Invaded Britain. He Should Invaded The North Africa First

10 Italy's Failure To Capture Greece Italy (Italian: Repubblica Italiana) is a sovereign state and unitary parliamentary republic in south-central Europe.

Italy covers an area of 301,338 km². With almost 62 million inhabitants, it is the third most populous EU member state. Located in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy shares open land borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia, San Marino, and Vatican City. The... read more

After having some success in the Southern Europe, Italy attempted to invade Greece, which failed miserably. Italy wanted support to conquer Greece so Germany had to move a good fraction of their troops they had ready to invade the Soviet Union to help Mussolini. This delayed Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union by almost six weeks and as we all now, would cost them in the long run. Germany would have to cross through Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Romania to reach Greece to help Italy in their conquest of Southern Europe. If Italy could have captured Greece without needing German assistance, Germany and the Axis Powers could have invaded the Soviet Union far earlier, potentially avoiding the winter that plagued their progress and capturing the Soviet Union entirely, avoiding the war on two fronts. Italy's incompetence would cost Germany in many ways not just in this instance. You could bring the argument that they were the key reason in Germany and the Axis Powers defeat in WW2 in the Western front.
